Just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get sponsorship. I'm really just looking to at least get some gear or expenses covered. This racing thing can get really expensive when you do some traveling. Currently, i have some sponsorships from Local businesses. I've heard that you need to approach the larger companies in the Fall for the following season. any info would be greatly appreciated!! Oh....and i'm a cross-country mountain biker. I hear that we are a dime a dozen....

Just some suggestions and thoughts for you....

I think what it comes down to is who you know and how marketable you are. I had a friend in the food industry who mentioned she knew some cyclists to a friend of hers... to make a long story short I got a sponsorship out of the deal. I would recommend having an idea what kind of relationship you want to establish - whether that be discounted bike parts, nutrition, advertising, etc. then go to them and start asking. I know that on our jerseys a small logo presence costs at minimum $800. If you have some results and wins that will make it easier to market yourself - because then you'll have visibility. Take some photos with you. Find sponsors who believe in giving back to community and demonstrate to them you will be an ambassador for their image. (Massage Therapy, medical offices, bike shops, etc.... people who are into health and promote it.)

It's a hard and challenging road to find sponsors- you might see if you can find some background info out from a local shop. Also - take a look and see who hosts your local club events. You know those t-shirts they give away at some running events? See who's on the back and start inquiring. Also - start asking your friends and competitors.

Good luck!
