Anyone get this? How have you resolved it, different pedaling system?

I had the same issues. I switched from my Sidi Bullets to a pair of Lake MX305, with a wider toe box, and it's made all the difference in the world. You may need a wider shoe, bigger shoe, better insole, etc. The toe box was the key for me, though. :)

Our club recently did a fit clinic, with some fitting pros volunteering their time. There was a whole cleat/pedal station. Their teaching was to have the cleat moved back a bit if you get hot spots.

Yes, I moved the cleat back as far as I could about a year ago, and it did help a bit. I am hearing more often than not that a road shoe makes the difference, and I am running mtb shoes right now.

Great suggestions everyone, thanks so much!!

I suffered from this for years. As a beginning Ultra Cyclist (2003) I thought that's just the way it is. I tried insoles, varying thickness socks, different shoe manufacturers nothing helped. Then last year I got a pair of Shimano Custom Road shoes ($359). I know that's pricey for most and it was for me as well. Maybe this recommendation doesn't help the OP but I can honestly say they were well worth it. This is the mountain shoe (http://epictrain.blogspot.com/2009/05/trans-iowa-v5-race-report.html) but the top looks exactly like the road shoe.

Vireo,

Curious, design wise, do you think this shoe is different from the standard shoe that is on the market? Some many things are designed for women now, it's quite amazing. I have the two buckle and cinching system on my Sidi mtb shoes, and I keep them loose. Perhaps I'll go back to my road shoes and see what happens...

Brandy, my lovely and TE member, has the same Shimano R300 shoes that I have. Not women specific and she loves them as well. She also wears a Sidi two velcro strap shoe. The MTB shoe in the picture fits me like the road shoe (both custom).

Explain "standard shoe"? Do you mean non-custom? If so, yes it will be different. The shoe is heated and molded to your foot. The footbed is not modified just the upper.

I'm experimenting with a different pedal this summer. I put on Wellgo trekking pedals so I can wear my Keen sandals or my Tahos, both of which run a little wide and I think is perfect for summer mashing. ;)

Silly question. My husband just had this happen for the first time during a century. Turns out he was wearing cotton socks! Yikes. Are you wearing microfiber socks?

That's a good point. I noticed certain socks will prevent hot spots.

I have less of a problem with hot spots when I wear the thinnest socks I have.

Nope, I wear bear feet in my shoes! I can't fit socks in my Sidi shoes with the E soles in them, so I go barefoot now.
