I am planning on commuting to work but I am little uneasy about riding on some of the major roads to my building. I have seen websites that show you the best routes for cyclist/commuters but they are for NYC and some areas in California. Does anyone know if there are general maps or bike route planning websites? Any help would be appreciated :)

Hi pinkpedalsUT,
I'm assuming you are in Salt Lake, so I found this website: http://www.slcgov.com/transportation/BicycleTraffic/MAP.htm

We have a map like this for Tucson. I find it very helpful. I usually stick to Existing Bike Lane and then minor streets marked as Existing Signed Shared Roadway.

Hope that helps,
Mary

You can see what others have posted on Bikely.com to see if there is anything relevant for you.
Here's a search on bikely for "commutes" in Salt Lake City: http://www.bikely.com/listpaths/srchkey/Salt+Lake+City/is/Commute

Also...when you do come up with a route, try riding on the weekend, first, when traffic is generally a little lighter. It will give you a chance to see the area, and scope out possible alternatives, first....

What part of the city are you going to commute from/to? I live in the Sugarhouse area and ride up to Research Park everyday. I ride very early in the morning which allows me to ride up 21st S, but my afternoon ride home is on very busy streets...
