I'll be visiting the town of Mendocino this weekend and am looking for a 30-40 mile ride - NOT hwy 1 -
does anyone know anything good with decent or at least minimal shoulders for road biking?

You aren't going to get a lot of wide roads with shoulders anywhere up there. Hwy 1 has the best shoulders.
I'd suggest heading south a bit and doing an out and back on one of the small roads that head into the hills - Big River, Little River airport Rd, Albion or Navarro Ridge Rd. There will be climbing.
Also Hwy 128 is one of my favorite roads to ride on ever. Beautiful.

It's a great road. (I don't know about the shoulder, though.) The part right at the coast is flat. Then it gets rolly. The little towns on it are great. There are lot of wineries. That whole road from the coast to Calistoga is about one of my favorite stretches of road.

Great place to stop along the road. Their grape juice is better than a lot of folks wine and their wine .... pick up a bottle on the way to or from Mendocino or on your ride. :)

No shoulders on any of the roads up there!! So beware of RV's etc.
Another option might be to ride the Comptche - Ukiah road out of Mendocino, and then connect with the road that goes to 128. That would make a nice loop and it's much less traveled than highway 1 or just staying on 128.
