Taking someone's advice here on the forum, I contorted myself last night to measure my stiz bones. Other than feeling like I was in a bad porn movie, I got a measurement of 850 mm! Is this even possible? And let's just say this isn't some kind of operator error- does anyone make a seat to hold those up?
What's going on with that? Should I be in a circus side-show? I look normal...

definitely not. you could prolly give birth to a baby giraffe if that was so. Try again.

*chuckles at AR's giraffe remark*
No, I don't think that 850mm is possible. How did you go about measuring?
Are you sure that's what the tape measure/ruler said? 850mm is like three quarters of a yard -- never mind giving birth to a giraffe, an elephant baby would likely pass through that!!!

I had to look it up, an elephant's pelvic canal is more in the range of 400-500 mm.
I had to look it up

So...
once we've all recoverd from chuckling, and the elephant AND the giraffe are back where they belong - please don't take what I (or the others) said personally, I'm sure you are a wonderful, pretty lady - now can you just feel for your sitbones to get a rough estimate? Should be way less than a hand span.
Maybe try measuring in inches (I assume that's the system you're most familiar with because you're in the USA) and then convert?
We may look dumb but believe it or not, we can figure out centimeters ;)
Chick- exactly what method did you use to measure? Did it involve sitting on foam or play dough? Or did you just wrap a tape measure around your butt?

Hee hee! :D
Sorry Chicken Little - please believe that nobody would be laughing if this were physically possible (at least I would HOPE not!). I think maybe there was a bit of operator error. I think you must have measured the wrong bones, or something . 850mm = about 33.5". Just under a yard. The chair I'm sitting on is 16-1/2".
I didn't know you could even look up the size of an elephant's pelvic canal.

Um, maybe it's a math error. Let me pour a glass of wine, take myself to dinner, smoke a cigarette and get out the tape measure. It will take a little bit, as I can't do this at work. Post later. I am also laughing at myself!

Maybe your measuring tape has the first decimal, and it was 85mm instead of 850mm???
Thank you Alpinerabbit for the longest laugh of the day - the baby giraffe thing cracked me up!

Okiedokie- after further measuring and investigation, I apparently pulled the wrong tape measure from the sewing box, the lights were dim, and I had just had a glass of wine, and only one contact was in place. Now, the correct measurement of my saddle sore hiney is 76.3mm. Not enough to pass a giraffe.
Anyway, is there is scale somewhere that tells me what saddle fits this measurement?
Hummmm...
Is it me or that's also odd?

Yeah, don't we usually talk about like, 140 mm???

Thought a visual might help here. Most bike shops have this handy device and will let you sit your hiney on it for free to take the measurement. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.nidus-corp.com/TinyImages/LargeImages/assometer.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.nidus-corp.com/bass.html&usg=__yY-CCIrnEbXlzalvT_7MSKVZ-z0=&h=514&w=600&sz=162&hl=en&start=1&sig2=8SmAxZe_mc1EM_4yMFlzuQ&um=1&tbnid=bSFcDG2TfLEhDM:&tbnh=116&tbnw=135&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmeasuring%2Bsit%2Bbones%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1&ei=PEgTSqzJG5TYlAeYpJDHAw
I have heard of people using playdough or a bag of flour as well.

What the heck is wrong with me? I am feeling like a mutant. 6 inches is 152mm, correct? I just picked a random number and stuck it in a google converter.
Crap, lemme call an assistant. Now, this will be awkward...
Are you measuring centre-to-centre? (That's the Canadian way to do it. Center-to-center might be best in the USA.) :)

That is one scary illustration. Reminds me of a chicken.
Of all the threads I've seen about measuring sit bones I find this one to be the most entertaining by far.

ROFL! I didn't even get to the full sized image before I cracked up!
It does look like a dancing chicken.

Eek, that is a scary image! I didn't know we had to take our skin and flesh off before sitting on the butt-meter!
And, what's with the asymmetry? Is that even possible, or are they just trying to illustrate that it doesn't matter if you center your pelvis precisely on the meter?

I recently was fitted at the LBS. Their contraption had a gel substance inside that left an imprint. My sitbones are know proudly displayed on the wall - my dh went in later that day and they happily pointed them out to him.

Went to the bike shop. Home with a Fizik and happy ***. Nothing grossly abnormal to report. Other than you probably wouldn't me to do anything that involves the metric system.
That is one scary illustration. Reminds me of a chicken.
AAAH!
