View Full Version : SportTracks vs. +3 Network: Inconsistency in Stats?

In comparing some of the stats from SportTracks to the same stats on the +3 Network web site, I notice that SportTracks consistently pegs me at lower speeds. ST might say I averaged 14.0 mph, but +3 then says 14.7. Similarly, ST says a top speed of 29 mph and +3 says 35. Why would this be if I import the exact same route into both? :confused:

I'm not familiar with +3, but have you got your preferences for each set the same, in terms of smoothing and excluding stopped time?

Hmmm.
Plus3 says my Tour de Cure was 97 miles, Motionbased said 100.75.
Hmmm. Plus3 had my average as 16.2, while Motionbased said only 16mph.
Can I take one from column A and one from column B?

Yeah, who cares about accuracy when Plus 3 gives back and gives better SWAG ;)
I just got this message in my inbox:
Congratulations! During “Bike to Work Week” you earned yourself an Ethik Seat Bag compliments of Pedros! This is a great bag made with sustainability as a core value.
In just one week, the Plus 3 activities listed as commutes totaled 8789 miles! This is a carbon offset of 9067 LBS CO2, roughly equivalent to removing one car from our roads for an entire year!
To claim your seat bag, reply back to this email and include your US shipping address and we’ll get one in the mail to you.
The Challenge Continues: Everybody who logs at least 4 commute Activities during May will receive a bottle of Pedros Ice Wax. And from all who signed up, five lucky winners will get a Pedros Critical Mass Tool. On top of all that, Plus 3 will make a matching donation of up to $500 to The League of American Bicyclists, , organizers of Bike to Work month, for all these Challenge miles. We will be announcing winners for the remaining portions of the challenge at the end of the month.
Keep on commuting and Making it Count!

I got one too! :) I love Plus3. I just got the socks I won in the Ritchey 444-mile challenge. Luckily, I had my 300K during that period, plus a century the weekend before that.

I got the socks, too, but they were medium and too big for my feet, just like the previous pair I got from them. :( ...Which meant my Mom got some great socks for her birthday! Generally I'm loving +3 though.
I figured out the statistics inconsistency: SportTracks, at least the way I have it set up, doesn't exclude stopped time. So if my ride takes a total of 5 hours and 15 minutes, but I spend 30 of those minutes stopped, I actually only took 4 hours and 45 minutes. But SportTracks doesn't take that into account, and this becomes more noticeable the longer your stopped. So today I averaged 14.9 mph but it said I went 13.7 mph including stopped time. The +3 Network just takes the info straight from the Garmin, or it's smart enough to exclude stopped time, so it matches what I expect. I'm not sure if there's a way to make SportTracks smarter about that, but at least it's explained.

SportTracks -> Settings -> Display -> Analysis
That gives your options for including/excluding stopped time and watch pauses; cadence and power cutoff; and degree of smoothing of each variable.
You also have a few options for adjusting smoothing and auto-pause directly in the Garmin units, but the procedure varies depending on which model you have.
