I'm buying a gift for a baby who is four months old. It's a just-for-fun t-shirt, and I can't decide whether to get 6-12 month size or 12-18 month size. I remember hearing friends say that many baby clothes are too small.

I don't have kids and most of my friends are years past childbearing, so I don't have anyone IRL to ask.

Here's the shirt (http://www.gabbybaby.com/Shop_adviceo.htm), so you can see how not serious it is.

Oh, that's funny!

I found with my kids that generally they would wear one size up from whatever age they were, but my babies were enormous behemoths (is that a bit redundant?), so I don't know if that's always the case. I'd guess that if you'd like the baby to be able to wear the shirt now, then getting the 6 month size should be fine. 12 to 18 months would likely be too large.

I would go with the bigger size. Especially if he is a bigger baby. He will get to wear it alot longer. I put my girls in 12-18 month stuff when they were 7 months...especially my second because the clothes were around.
Its better to be a little big than too small with babies.

I always bought big for my kids. Since it is long sleeve, it will be perfect for the fall and winter months when he/she will be a bit bigger anyways.

Oh! great T-shirt. I wish my son had had one when he was small...

I'd go for the larger. Parents tend to get loads of cute clothes for small babies that are outgrown as soon as you turn your back, but not so much for one year olds up.

...aaawwww, please forgive the thread hijack but I had a sudden attack of mommy memories. Here's my son, about one year old, wearing what was my favourite outfit for him then. I guess it's no wonder that people thought he was a girl, we just thought he was beautiful.

He is beautiful, and looks happy as well.

Oh yeah, get the bigger size--long sleeves and all that. If it was short sleeved, I'd say get the smaller one. But he'll be able to weart it longer when he's a little older anyway. My grandson grew out of his newborn stuff in about 3 weeks! (he was 9 lbs at birth).

...and another for the larger size. Are you convinced yet? :D :D I LOVE the shirt.

same here...I'd opt for the bigger.
After having my own 2 sons and having them each outgrow those outfits sized at "0-3 or 6mos" without even getting to wear them, I learned to buy up in size.
If my baby gift is clothing, that's what I still do and it's been well-received.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I do wish I could show this shirt to my late mother. She was still complaining about unsolicited parental advice when I was in my fifties (of course she was very funny and I usually provoked her into telling the stories again).

If these shirts had existed when I was a baby, I'm sure I would have had one -- or two or three.
