So, here's some photos (by the infamous Thom) of my new ride. I've been riding my vintage Mercian on the TE Girl's hill training program but I just am not comfortable with the brake reach and the bar ends. I have to be down in the hoods for all descents which gettings tiring and puts me too forward on the bike. I just couldn't bear to mess with her beautiful vintage components so I started looking. Kelly Bike had a great deal on a new steel frame, I went shopping in our garage and found a few other deals and built up a bike just for climbing, low gears and high bars. So, here's Magpie!

Cool Rivendell/Nitto threadless stem

Love the new fork. It's lower modulus so it will hopefully soak up some road chatter.

You need new water bottle cages. When's your birthday?

What a great looking bike and to think you built it yourself. Best wishes for wonderful rides ahead!

~ JoAnnThanks! I got a good wrench boy here at home. I do the big stuff and he does the finesse work. I am such a princess when it comes to shifting! :o

V.Uh, you don't like her cages? They're stainless, no black ick on your bottles.

For anyone who might be interested, Chris still has some sale frames. Bubba and I now have 3 (2 are cross) and just love them. True Temper OX Platinum tubing and TIG welded - really, really nice.

They're nice. But I think these would look cool.

Hmmm, I was thinking they (it, one as only one cage mount) would look good on the Mercian. I figured I'd just get Bubba to distract you one day after a ride.

Magpie's stem is bee-yoo-ti-ful! I'd never seen a lugged stem.

She and Waldo will make an attractive pair.

SadieKate "Uh, you don't like her cages? They're stainless, no black ick on your bottles."

They are Elite Stainless cages, no? That's what I have and love 'em but then that's the "look" I'm going for.

With the schnazzy carbon fork I'd be tempted to get Elite carbon cages.

They leave ick on your bottles? Who knew?
:D

:DHaven't a clue about carbon and ick. Alloy does leave ick. The tubing on that Kelly is small so I didn't want anything that was too bulky.

carbon = no ick.

also these (Profile Ecage nylon/plastic) leave no ick. They are what I have on my X-Wing.

And, what do I have to pawn to afford them? :p

Edited -- Ooops, just re-read your post. I thought you were recommending the carbon version at $40 bucks a pop. Yes, you too can spend $80 to save 19 grams. Let me run and buy one for everyone! :p

no, no, no! Though I love the look of carbon and do have a carbon fork and seatpost, my proclivity for those unplanned dismounts make me leary of using the carbon cages.

As Newfsmith can attest, when my bike goes down, the cages hit first due to their "behind the saddle" mount. It's a weight/balance/velocity thing

The nylon/plastic cages bounce nicely and are reasonably priced AND they come in several colors (I have black though).

no, no, no! Though I love the look of carbon and do have a carbon fork and seatpost . . .Me, also, but I'm not enough of a weight-weenie to buy carbon cages. Maybe someday when I'm a sponsored racer. ;)
