Hi all
Been off the bike for *cough cough* months...but getting the fever. The Aurora is sitting in my studio...had to bring her in over the winter from the bike shed...how anthropomorphic is that!

Just saw Terry's new Valkyrie bikes....sweet! black steel....

Also just read that Vermont Teddy Bear is buying a major share in Terry...hope it signals a long life....

perhaps this is old news....well....hello anyway!

Just been grazing posts....DAMN I miss this place!!!!

Hi Elk, did you lose your love affair with the Aurora?

I bought a Globe. I've been thinking of you as I pedal the miles away. :)

I remember how happy Elk was when she got that and that kind of piqued my interest in the Aurora.

Gosh no....I still LOVE that bike...more in fact than ever!! I realize how much work I've put into her...the leather, the new bars, the just right acorn bag....the bike fit.....

and how super she looks! I was about to take her out and clean and lube the chain, pump up the tires and ride....but it got dark....:o

So what else should I do to get ready to ride?

I really like it. I'm still tweaking her. It has a Shimano IG8 Nexus hub.

I think the valkyrie is a stunning bike. I would love to get a hold of one. I'm not really sold on the fork but it is almost everything i am looking for in a bike, not that I am looking.

What I want to know about the Valkyrie:

does it have long reach brakes to accommodate wide-ish tires and fenders?

and

does it have eyelets for rack mounting?

There are 3 Valkyries...a touring bike, a commuter and another one.

That Valkyrie has some monster gears!
The Jamis specs (http://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/archives/2008/08_aurora_archive.html) say 11-32 but it's a triple. I'm confused :o

You need a Surly. ;)

I went bike shopping today.
The Aurora is kinda heavy:( and there is no place that has a surly in stock :( :(

Also, I thought that Jamis had a sloping top tube unless I'm thinking of someone elses bike:confused:

LBS thought i might consider a Coda

Zen, Theres someone on the richmond craigslist with a surly steamroller bike in 49 cms, I think. They dont list what the components are, so I am not sure if they've got it set up as a single speed or what. But something that might work.

If you ever wanna ride my surly to get an idea of fit or feel if you want to order one, its the pacer in 43/42 cms, I think...

I should almost sell it to you, I think that bike hates me.

The Steamroller is sold as a hipster-fixie and 49cm is too big for me.
I wish all my bike decisions were so easy:D

I'm looking for a lightweight:o touring bike if there is such a thing(custom, I know)
Needs front & rear eyelets and numerous bottle mounts.

A cross check is probably about as close as you'll get. Mine would be too big for you to test, though (50cm - fits like a 52).

Light would be my concern. Otherwise, definitely LHT. But they're HEAVY (and I prefer not 26" wheels, but that's a whole 'nother kettle 'o fish).

err what is the confusion?

and why does your collection seem to constantly be growing? just to be an enabler, have you considered buying a soma frame (like this mixte (http://www.somafab.com/bvista.html) for step through ease) and then taking the parts from one of your other bikes to create a nice touring bike. the pros would be a nice/ moderately light frame, gears in an actual touring range (my bike is set up like that jamis, and I appreciate it but I pack light and like my bike for riding fast as well slow and steady), you can "reuse" a bike that you are not getting as much use out of, and it would probably be cheaper than a new touring bike.

I'm not sure you're enabling as much as being practical.

I need you around next time I'm tempted by another bike.

or to talk me out of these cranks I want...

11- 32 is the cassette: 9 speed mtn
52/42/30 is the crankset: triple

it is quite the range, but most people will say that is not touring appropriate

There are a bunch of new LHT in various sizes on ebay right now. The smallest size being a 46cm.

You had a Coda then went to Aurora? Why?

Adventure Cycling has an article this month on buying a touring bike.

I think I read that. It rated the FX2 as a good low budget tourer!
I think that's where I got the Aurora idea too.

I may just have to grit my teeth and save up my babysitting money for a custom bike.
A trike I can ride at Happy Haven Rest Home :o

I wanted an AUrora but just tried the Coda for size.

You looked at the Bianchi? the Volpe?
If you like the Terry maybe you should wait for a used Valkyrie...too heavy?

I purchased a Valkyrie touring bike and it is at my LBS being assembled. I plan to use it on my upcoming tour of Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. The gearing should be kind to the knees. I pick it up on Wednesday afternoon after work (actually I may leave a little early). I am finally going to embrace the fact that I have three bikes (steel, titanium, and carbon) all with differing wheel/tire sizes (26 inch, 650, and 700). I'll just have a small mechanic shop in the rear of my Element! :p

Please post more about your new bike...I am considering a Valkyrie for my new commuter bike (though not the commuter, either the touring or cross model)...
