I went for a ride today with my SO, who is superman on a bike. I always know that I am in for a workout when riding with him. Our goal today was to ride from Arlington to Ft. Worth, cruise around downtown, and ride back...about 75 miles. It did look a bit, uh, dark, out as we started. So we are ripping along, I am keeping up well, we are averaging about 19 mph (good for me, considering we had plenty of hills) and I was enjoying, for once, not much wind. It began to drizzle, but neither of us are into quitting (even when we should) so we pressed on. So we were riding along a poor patch of road on the shoulder. The shoulder came to an end ahead, so he hopped up the lip to the road proper. Being the sheep I am, I followed without noticing how much higher the road was from the shoulder...and wiped out. I banged my head on the concrete, and hit my hip and elbow. Keep in mind, I did EXACTLY THE SAME THING on Tuesday night while on bike patrol (I didn't SEE the lip then)...the only two times I have ever done that in zillions of miles and still have scabs, bruises, and a swollen thumb from that debacle.
My SO returned to help me pick up the stuff that had flown out of my bag and assess the damage to the bike and me. When I asked him twice if I had fallen, he walked me back to a little driveway (the only thing in sight...I think it led to an oil rig) and left me there while he double timed it to get the truck (although I vaguely remember insisting that I was fine and could ride). So as I sat there, I noticed the sprinkles had grown heavier. The only shelter was a little cluster of shrubbery on the side of the road. I initially sat in the middle of the cluster (now I was cold) until the sky opened up and BUCKETS of water and wind and thunder (and yes, I know about trees and lightning) erupted from the heavens. I walked around to the lee of the largest bush, parted the branches, and stepped in. I am a small person, and it was a good thing, because anyone any larger would not have been able to sit amongst the branches as I did. I was very , very wet, but protected from the worst of the wind. When my SO pulled up I simply emerged from the bush. Since he couldn't see two feet in front of him, he thought I simply materialized. He grabbed my poor bike (with soaking wet brooks saddle) and handed me his ridiculously small towel and cranked the heat for me. It took the butt warmers on full heat to make my teeth stop chattering.
My butt already looks like someone kicked me a few times, my elbow is sore, both knees scraped up, one calf bruised from knee to ankle, my thumb is at an odd angle to my hand. I had twigs and leaves in my hair, and I ruined my ipod, my glasses, my credit card wallet thingie and the credit cards inside, and the hood on one shifter is jacked up.
But it was funny, me stepping out of that bush into what was really a wall of water.

Chris, what a story! Hoping you are warm and cosy now, and that you're really all right. Boyoboy.

Those butt warmers are the best, when you least expect it and most need it, huh?

WOW- what a terrible story (sorry you fell). :(
I'm sure it was pretty funny for you to just appear out of the bush.

I hope you heal soon. :)

Ow ow ow.

Heal up quick. Don't forget to replace your helmet. +1 on getting that thumb looked at.

Good grief, how do you damage your credit cards?!

Check yourself for ticks!!! I've never been in bushes in Texas when I didn't get some.

what a story! will the SO be a little more careful when he leads you into unsafe places? (like warning you of the irregularities ahead?)
I hope you are warm, comfortable and safe now.
Get that thumb looked at!
(and you have a great sense of humor!)

Pfew! When I see the words "Bush" and "Texas", I thought this was going to be political!:p

I encourage you to see a doc. When Silver did something similar, she had 5 broken ribs and a collapsed lung. TWO WEEKS later, they figured out that she also had broken her wrist:eek:

OMG! Please get to the Dr and then get your bike checked out and then get a new helmet.

Great story by the way!

Chris - I can just see you emerging from the middle of a shrub and into a spring deluge. What a sight that must have been! Glad you're warm and dry now. You are going to a doctor, right?????

Agh. Negative on the doctor, I have to have a limb (to make a pun) hanging off to go. I am really stiff and pretty bruised today, but ok. My thumb was a casualty of Tuesday's fall on patrol....it is already getting better.
Superman felt terrible about not warning me...but for heaven's sake, I have eyes and I know not to try to take a little curb like that without giving it the correct angle. I was following along like a sheep. Tuesday's fall on patrol was the same sort of thing but I was watching a vehicle and lost my line and did the same thing on a road with construction.
Thanks for the well wishes...I am working tonight but because rain is forcasted will be in the car. I will replace my helmet, and probably, sadly, a shifter.
AND, I will certainly check for ticks...I hadn't thought of that. Shudder.

At least you've made a good story out of it! Your disorientation (not knowing if you'd fallen) is the skerry part... I've heard of people coming out of the woodwork, but out of bushes? That's originall...

nah, don't worry about the ticks. You'd know by now if one was on you!:eek::eek::eek:

Oh man, my bike is jacked up. I gave it a cursory pat yesterday but was so cold, wet, and sore, I didn't get back to her until today. Ugh. It is less than a year old but I am afraid did not come out of this well. My Brooks titanium saddle is toast, one shifter is a dead soldier, there is something wrong with the rear brakeset and the rear deraileur. Hopefully the frame is OK but I guess I will have to take her to the LBS to make sure and see what the damage is on the components.
UGH. I feel so stupid...it was a stupid, stupid thing to do...I am a pretty decent and certainly experienced rider, to do the same thing twice in one week is ridiculous.
Oh, add the cleat on one shoe to the list of catastrophes...and the ratching mechanisms in both shoes are filled with leaves from my stint in the bush. I tore the palm in one glove (which really needed to be replaced anyhow), my ipod is working, albeit a bit sloshily, but my phone, which survived the crash thanks to the superhuman case I keep it in, keeps saying it doesn't recognize the device... I assume this is from the soaking it took despite the fact that I wrapped it in my headsweat thing to try to keep it drier. Hmmm. This could be expensive.

Oh man, that sucks!

How are you feeling? I thought about how you didn't remember crashing, and was wondering if you had a concussion?

I hope the frame is okay, and all parts can be fixed or replaced!

Don't feel stupid. Don't beat yourself up. Let those thoughts go. Accidents happen.

If I'm understanding this right, you fell on the job and hurt your thumb? I'm pretty sure that the terms of your employer's workers comp insurance requires you to see a doctor for any accident that causes an injury. If you have some long term damage to your thumb because of that, you'd be on the hook for the bills, and be in trouble for not following the rules at work. I'm just sayin'.

I do wish you would go to a doctor, you sound seriously concussed and that's nothing to mess around with.

LOL! I'm ok. My thumb is fine....a little whonky but it will heal. Yeah, the thumb happened on the job and yeah, we are supposed to go if we are injured, but we are cops and pretty much don't go unless there is lots of blood or bone sticking out of skin. No more headache today and I am bright eyed (even though I had to work all night). A short nap and I will be off to assess the damage to my sweet bike.
Thanks to everyone!!!!!!!!! Ya'll rock. Thinking about the ticks is a little oogy.
