Does standing help?

Are your shoes too tight? I had the same problem until I bought shoes that were just a little bit wider.

I have this problem when I wear a little thicker sock and don't give my feet room in the shoe. If I wear a thin sock it doesn't happen. Sounds like your feet may be too restricted in your shoes?

A shoe that isn't stiff enough can also cause this, at least when you're using clipless pedals.

What kind of "vintage" pedals are you using?

Standing does help. In fact I stand up and "pump" whenever my feet get too bad. I will try thinner socks on my next ride. I do not know what kind of vintage pedals they are; other then they are clipless and the cleats are metal. The shoes have very stiff carbon soles.
