So it's supposed to rain this weekend for the BP MS150 and then get hot. My LBS has recommended that I use some Chamois butter in the morning. I've never used it.... what would you all think?

have you ever ridden that far? I don't see how chamois butter would hurt. It should HELP

I always use it. It relieves pain, you avoid irritation, ...

wet chamois can be deadly...... well OK maybe it won't kill you, but aieeeeeeeeeee. Not only does the wet make your shorts more apt to irritate, grit usually gets in there with the water. One particularly rainy mucky race you could hear the yelps as each of us showered (a whole bunch of us gals were sharing a cabin) - we all had raw spots and actual cuts on our hineys from wet shorts, bad seams, and about a pound of road grit.

If you do go with the cream, put it not only in the usual places, but along your chamois seams too.

1) no.. I've never ridden this far before (especially back to back days)
2) How much do i use?
3) Do i put it on my chamois or my undercarriage?

any other tips that I should know for this long of a ride?

A wet chamois against your skin on an all day ride can equal the equivalent to diaper rash especially if conditions are also supposed to be warm! I would definitely use something as a barrier for your skin. I like Glide as it isn't too "gooey" and seem to last all day (12+ hours).

Another tip, if it is going to rain, your feet will get wet. I might consider getting some waterproof booties. There is nothing worse than a shoe full of water. The rest of you might dry out, but your shoes and socks will stay wet and your toes will shrivel like you've been swimming all day!

do you just buy some and keep it with you in your jersey pocket? I'm very intrigued by thsi whole chamois cream situation..... I'm glad I found this out now!

I use a small screw-top jar to carry chamois cream with me. Drug stores may sell them as travel pill cases, camping stores have them, etc.

I find that if my shorts get wet there are more chances of chafing later on.

So I'd bring a little bit of chammy cream along.

I'm sorry but this is driving me nuts.
It seems like a word has been left out or they were placed in random order and it makes my brain hurt.

If you're too shy to say "labia' let's say Twinkie or Zsa Zsa or something.

Just don't say 'catcher's mitt' because then I'd really be confused.

Well, it would be really bad to leave a catcher's mitt in the rain.

This being said, if I need chamois cream it's not on my genitals at all but rather in the creases where my legs connect with the rest of my body (groin, under my bum), especially if the offender is wet shorts.

Too funny, I have never heard of it called a "Twinkie" before. My friend from England refers to it as a "Twinkle".

I don't put the Chamois stuff there either, just the surrounding area.

could you possibly carry a spare pair of shorts and washcloth to dry the affected area?

Presto
04-16-2009, 10:12 PM
Wet butt
1. plain compression shorts without a chamois
2. fenders

Wet feet
1. Keen commuter sandals or something similar
2. wool socks and a spare dry pair for later

Granted you can't do this for the upcoming ride. But it's something to consider for the future.

zen... you ALWAYS make me laugh!!!!

I picked up about 6 sample sizes of chamois butter (it's purple and yellow packaging). I figured it can fit into my nifty Bento Box....

I guess I'll just have to have wet feet, unless my support car meets us for lunch, which I doubt.

Who knows how this whole thing will go... i'm just so excited to do it for my mom!!!

The correct term is "hoo-hah".

I learned this from watching the doctors on Grey's Anatomy.

Everyone knows if you see it on TV, it's true! :p

I saw rain shorts in Mallorca. They go to the thighs, are completely impermeable (you'd sweat somewhere else) and protect your anatomy from the wetness. It really is like sitting around in wet diapers plus grit. Yuk.

And do the waterproof bootie thing, or try and ride w/o socks - the insoles etc. will get unpleasantly soggy.

Rain shorts?! They obviously have no idea how much a woman SWEATS in that area.

It's not like guys don't... of course they go over regular shorts, sorry if that didn't come across.

after all you don't really get cold on the bare lower legs in rain if the temperature is ok.

It seems to me to make more sense than iffy-impermeable long pants.

I like this stuff when I know it's going to be really wet...

http://a1468.g.akamai.net/f/1468/580/1d/pics.Drugstore.com/prodimg/13175/300.jpg

Caveat- it's really gooey, smells kinda odd, and hard to wash out of your chamois, but it'll still be there, doing its job, no matter how soaked you get.

I usually put it on the skin, but you can put it on the chamois, too. Whatever you do, don't put chamois creme in your vagina. Ever. If you chafe there during a bike ride, then yer doin' something wrong...

Could not have survived last summer's RAIN (Ride Across INdiana) without Chamois Butt'r. Thunderstorms at the start and rain for the first 40+ miles, then sunny and hot for the next 120 miles. Everything dried out except for the feet -- still prunish and soaked at the finish -- but, oh the grit, grit, grit, grit!!! Grit in places that boggle the mind. An unbelievable amount of grit.

We stopped at a friend's house for lunch rather than the official lunch stop and I was able to change my shorts and socks. OMG; the relief. Thankfully, my butt didn't get anywhere near as chafed as it might have otherwise. Even when RAIN is dry, you get really dirty during it.

It's not like I put it there on purpose, but how the heck do you keep some of it from going in, while still using enough to protect the labia???

That is why I use Body Glide. It has a consistency of deodorant and protects against moisture and chaffing and you can put it where you want it without having it go in those places you don't want it to go.

I live for chamois cream! I mush it in to the seams of my shorts, then top it off with a dollop onver my twinkle twinkie hoo-haa lady bits whatever you want to call them. The more the merrier I say!

It will stick to the inner side of the labia minora? I can't imagine deodorant would stick there.

Also, does it have paraben preservatives? Their ingredient list isn't online.

ETA: drugstore.com has an ingredient list and it looks pretty safe. I think I'll try it... if it'll stick. ;)

OK, I was riding today, and I couldn't get this thread out of my head . I've had some beginning of the season hoo-ha issues, which I had checked out just this week, because last year I let it go too long and ended up with a VBI.

When we got home, I informed my DH that my twinkie survived and he was like, what????
As for Body Glide, I am beginning to think it is a miracle drug. I use it where I used to use chamois butter and it also has stopped my blistering problem on my feet, I had when running. I just shmear it everywhere...

I like the word "trim." Is it just old fashioned? Or do I never hear it because it's rude?

Words like "twinkie" and "hoo-ha" definitely make me want to break out the really rude words. :p

I've never heard the word trim, either. Is it British?
I have no problem saying vagina, but the other words make me laugh. I think we've become way too serious about this stuff. Sure, I taught my kids to say the correct words, but, I would rather laugh...

We just need Latin words for twinkie and twinkle.

"Down there" just means Australia, doesn't it?

Reading this thread really makes me laugh out loud. I'm sitting in the living room with my laptop laughing and laughing and DH is like "what the heck are you laughing about?" I don't want him thinking about all the TE hoo has, Zsa Zsa, twinkie, twinkle, trim, labia, vagina, crotch, down there, girl stuff, so I just tell him "never mind, it's a long story" and he goes back to reading Bicycling magazine.

I do remember Miranda Bailey referring to it as a "Va-jay-jay".
That's my personal favourite. :)
There's also "Front bottom". Just for comedic effect.

Has anyone trield Udderly Smooth?
If so, was it good for long rides?
