View Full Version : I have been so hungry lately

I can't seem to find what my body needs. I don't crave anything in particular, I'm just hungry. Even drinking more water isn't helping. I know I'm eating enough calories but I've also been cycling just about every day. I take a vitamin/mineral supplement to help balance the diet. Thought my weight would be down more this week since I'm kicking up the workouts. :(
Is this another symptom of overtraining? :o

Do you need more protein maybe? I'm on a diet that has more protein in it than most diets and less calories than I would think I need, but I'm not generally having a hunger problem, and seem to be biking just fine. I'm also losing the weight I was trying to lose for years.

how old are you? I noticed since I hit 50 I'm hungrier all the time whether I'm training or not. :(

I'm 43. I've noticed I've been hungry the last week or so. Then I'm fine for another week and then I'm hungry again. I don't have those cycles anymore so it's not pms. Sigh.
Don't know what the weather has been like in your area, but around here it has been cold and grey - I think that (and some ramped up training) has made me feel like I'm starving all of the time.

+1 on protein. That's how I get when I'm not getting enough. Too many carbs just exacerbate hunger, for me.

+1 on too many carbs. Carbs breed hunger.. more carbs, more carbs, yum, yum...

Let's go get a pizza :)
Zen, lol. Actually, I'd like a sunny side up egg with 2 pieces of toast at the Waffle House. :D
Me thinks I am cutting the wrong calories--will need to add more protein like several of you have suggested. Mr. Sundial will have to treat me to a steak tonight. :D

hey Sundial, just want to send out a me too. I'm 42. I do think it is related to hormones (menopause-type hormones, I mean). I'm trying not to worry about it too much--but yeah, more protein, thanks for the reminder.
I do think it is related to hormones
Me too. Just because you no longer menstruate doesn't mean you don't have hormonal cycles. I have absolutely no data to back this up but it seems logical to me.
I ate an entire pineapple last night :o

What hormones does a pineapple feed?
?
The pineapple was likely OCD related.
I've moved on to snorting Cheetos.

I've just finished stuffing Zen's pizza down... good choice Zen :D
Now... we don't have Cheetos here... so I'm guessing its breakfast food perhaps? Hmmm... maybe I'll try snorting Nutragrain - with sliced banana... that could be interesting :p

Ack! Cheetos for breakfast!:p That's even beyond me and I will eat ANYTHING for breakfast.
I don't even know how to begin to describe them to someone who's never seen them.
Anyone else want to try?

They match your bike nicely from what I can see in the avatar.
What about adding some Cheez Whiz on the Cheetos so you are getting protein?
Gag!

The 22 year old that posted on water intake had a point. If i feel really hungry and shouldn't, the first thing I'll do is drink some water - your body is telling you you need something and it isn't necessarily more calories that it needs. If the feeling persists, I might eat or not, depending on the situation.
Zen is right, long after your menses stop, you are still cycling, the cycles just get better than they used to be.
A lot of you say you need more protein; but most of us (not addressing the vegans here) eat more protein than we really need.
I think my body gets bored and wants something to do. If I'm really focused on something, I get a lot less of those hunger urges. When riding, I actually have to PAY attention or I will wait too long to eat. That certainly never happens while I am sitting at work waiting for it to be lunch time.

What really gets me are the "organic" cheetos. That's just wrong.

There's now a company that is marketing a Cheeto's like product, without the bright colored cheese flavored substance, to use as packaging filler. It's a great alternative to packing peanuts. It can be tossed into the compost pile or thrown on a garden and watered in.

Hmmmm... dunno about that... :D I only eat cheetos once a year (tops!), and not for breakfast. :D
But Cheeto could be a nice name for my bike. :)

I abhor Cheetohs with an unmatched passion!
My son, he knows this. He eats Cheetohs, and threatens me with his orange crusted fingers.

Just at a grossly healthy barley, lentil, chicken stew and boy would I like that PIZZA about now. Cheeeeeeeeerios, about 3 times a year people bring me a box of cheerios, and I eat the whole box in one day, I LOVE CHEERIOS, Oakl leaf, eating a whole pineapple, pshaw, that's probably good for you, can't qualify as OCD
Hunger, I kind of think we should respect the hungers, training does burn a lot of calories. I try to fill up on bananas, yogurt, and almonds, they are the least offensive foods for unbridled snacking and are somewhat filling. (the combo is yummy especially if you toast your almonds before throwing them in the bowl)

I've had packages with those - puffed starch- yeah basically Cheetos without the salt or cheese flavor. If you throw them in the bathtub and pour water on them, they disappear.

On the hunger training front--I tried a Hammer Nutrition bar on my 60 mile ride today. It was mighty tasty, but I was shocked to see it had 11 grams of fat! So much more than a Larabar (12 g) and so so so much more than a Cliff Bar (5 g). And check this out--a whopping 44 g of carbs for the Cliff bar, but only 23 for Larabar and 27 for Hammer. So glad I looked--Cliff bar comes out way ahead!
