I replaced my stem with a shorter one but I dropped some parts.

I can't figure out where this goes. I have 3 carbon spacers and I couldn't get the aluminum ring to fit inside the stem or under the carbon rings.

Where does this go?

Do you have a picture of your bike with the old stem that you can use as a guide??

7rider, that would be logical but unfortunately, I didn't. :o I did finally figure it out. Sheesh! Lost sleep wondering where that silly thing goes.

It looks like the compression ring that goes on top of the headset to hold the pieces in place. The spacers then go on top of that.

And??????
C'mon....don't leave us (me) hanging!!

It sat snuggly inside the headset, where it comes into contact with the fork thingie. I thought it was to go just under the cane creek red rings but nope, went somewhere else.

If I hadn't been in such a hurry to change out the stem....right before it gets dark....and after I had a long day....and when I was hungry....and forgot to keep the front tire on the floor.....I wouldn't have had this problem.

I hate these kind of pop quizzes. :p

I just got one of those specialized stems with the shims. Great adjustable stems! How do you like yours?

You need it and I am glad that you figured out where it goes. I left mine off and went on a STEEP downhill ride and realized that my steering wasn't quite right. Glad you figured it out.

I have so many choices! I haven't been able to take it out on the trail yet to see. Right now I have it at a 12 degree rise.

Yeah, my steering felt a little stiff or something. I don't like leaving stuff off either but couldn't figure out just where it went. Took my time and tried different things until I found where it fit.

That's it! The crown race--#10. Cool!
Thank you for your help. :)

It's the crown race, not the compression ring (#8)? How the heck did you knock that loose? They're all the way at the bottom of the steer tube, and they usually take some muscle to remove...

Looking at the pic again, it could definitely be a crown race....I just assumed it was the ring b/c they're much easier to dislodge by accident.

Glad that it's all back together now :)

I, uh, forgot to leave the front tire on the floor when I disassembled stuff and the fork took off and I was left standing holding the top tube with the bars dangling. :o It was one of those days. :o

Look at the pic - it's split. That would make it easy to remove (and install).

In a standard AheadSet/CaneCreek headset, the crown race wouldn't be split and the compression ring would be. My ancient AheadSet and my new CaneCreek Tank II and S3 are all like that. (A split crown race wouldn't even work in a loose ball bearing style headset - it would wear rapidly.)

I'm not familiar enough with the various CaneCreek models to rule out a split crown race on some cartridge bearing model. However, I wonder if someone originally assembled this headset in the wrong order.

So I finished my ride on the Globe and looked down and saw the 2 wires that came loose from the prong male things. I went online to Specialized and they didn't have any tech info on the Globe, much less the head light so I called them and they told me to contact the manufacturer of the headlight. Meanwhile, I'm plugging it into the first and second, second and third, first and third male part things and the headlight is working as well as the tail light. My concern is if it's plugged in wrong will it short something out?

Can anyone help me? :o

I have an old moped that has lots of the same type of connectors and they are always coming loose. In lieu of a wiring diagram, I have found that you can often tell where they're supposed to go by the way the wires are bent. In your pic, it looks to me that the wire on the left connects to the top prong, and the wire on the right connects to the middle prong. Totally unscientific, I know, but that's my gut feeling.

Is there a positive or negative sign marked on either the connectors or the prongs?

I'm so glad I read this thread! I just reassembled my bike after my ride in California and trip back to Norway. I have the same (or at least a very similar) ring thingy left over. Could not work out where it went, but there's definitely something off with the steering. Now I can see if my ring thingy is the same as yours and if that solves the problem. What a relief that would be!

No, but there's a lightning bolt just above the front male prong thing, on the side. Me thinks I need to plug in one thing there. Now for the other one....

Isn't this fun? LOL! I hope you find the spot for the missing ring thingy. :)

My Schmidt hub has the same sort of connectors. If it works, you have matched things up correctly. It's not going to short out.

THANK YOU!!

I was worried I was going to mess it up. :(

I was trying to reconnect stuff and I did just like wackyjacky said and then I spotted the hidden connector clear in the back. Then I started second guessing myself.

Ok, pulled up the spec sheet and it looks like I can hook the second connecter to either the middle or rear thing. Anyone that doesn't have brain fog, tell me if it's so. Scroll down 3/4 page to the Lumotec N2 stuff.

Hard to tell from your pic: Are both wires black, or is there one black wire, and one black & white wire? From the diagram for the N (not N2), the black & white one would be the ground ("mass" or "earth" they call it) and would plug onto the middle prong. The solid black wire would be for the current and would plug onto the top (lightning bolt) prong.

But it sounds to me like you've got it hooked up correctly.

Wacky, both wires are black so I guess it's fine to plug it into the first and second prongs. At least that's what it looks like to me. Thanks for taking a peek at the diagram. :)
