From The Weather Channel:

Tornado outbreak likely today: We'll produce the forecast reasoning soon with graphics but here's what you need to know:

Where: The Lower Mississippi Valley leading into the Gulf States (basically Dixie Alley).

Large cities inside threat zone: Memphis, Jackson, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile.

Timing: May begin as early as lunchtime tomorrow and continue well into evening.

From Jackson, Mississippi National Weather Service forecast discussion:

"Many elements are coming together for a significant severe weather Thursday.
Long track supercell thunderstorms seem likely.
These storms will all have the potential to produce very large hail (golf to baseball), destructive winds of 75 mph or greater and tornadoes.
Some of these tornadoes could be of the long track variety and strong to violent.
That is a strong statement and rarely ever used."

We got the tail end with strong winds, lightning, thunder, rain, light hail and whining about said hail from DH whose truck does not fit in the garage. Hope everyone else is safe, I am looking for caffeine because my sleep was rudely interrupted at 3:47 am-5:08am.

ETA- Or maybe we got this before it moved east? I don't know, a dry line came through this morning. Stupid weather men claimed it would be dry and maybe just a shower so I didn't even expect to hear a rain drop.

Dark, rainy, windy, here at the bottom end of the Mississippi River in the Big Easy.

The Pearl River (border of Louisiana & Mississippi) and Tangipahoa Rivers are already at flood stages - have flooded homes. And you thought all the spring floods were in the Red River valley in N. Dakota (me too, until I saw it on the news).

Massive thunderstorm at 5:00am, now just rain, rain, rain. Wonder if my after-work ride will go on.

You Southern gals take care.

Does it seem to anyone else that the tornado areas seem to be moving South? We used to have them constantly here in Central IL, but in the last few years it seems to be more concentrated down south.

It's a sure sign of spring--Sundial's weather reports, that is!! Thanks for the update. I'll be sure to tune in in mid-April when I take a road trip to Louisiana, heading right through this area.

Yeah it was 3:45 this morning when my 70lb lab jumped in the middle of the bed having an "OMG LIGHTING!" freakout. Didn't have a clue it was going to do that, we both had to get up and close windows, disconnect antennas, who knows what else went on downstairs. I sat and watched the radar for a while, It as a nice strong storm. Just when I thought it was calming down the rain and hail would start back up again. Last thing I remember it was pushign 5am...next thing it was 6:53...and I had a 7am appt.

I vote for afternoon/evening storms, no more middle of the night stuff.

Just hit me as I pulled in from my ride - Perfect Timing!

Tornado Watch (that's good)...and thunder/lightning everywhere.

Ahhh! The sounds of spring.

As a post script - Growing up in Alabama, in the 70's, there were two years when we had 3 tornado warnings per week for about 2 months...

I lived all my life in Mississippi until 17 years ago when I moved to OR. We had numerous close calls. I used to have terrible nightmares about tornadoes-until I moved out here. When I taught school, we'd spend hours in the hallways in "tornado drills." It was scary.

When I taught school, we'd spend hours in the hallways in "tornado drills." It was scary.

In Birmingham, it wasn't drills! Once, we had 65 kids in a three foot wide hallway in the convent next to the school. No power, no ventilation - FOR THREE HOURS!. The humidity from our breathing was literally condensing and weeping on the walls. Ugh -the memories!

We're supposed to get this ominous weather Fri. morning here in NC.

Aggie_Ama
04-03-2009, 04:53 AM
At the bottom of tornado alley it wasn't a drill either. I grew up in Round Rock, TX. I remember spending 3 hours tucked in the concrete halls of my elementary school while the teachers listened to the radio reports that a tornado had wiped out Jarrell, TX that was the F-5 that leveled the town back in 1989. The aftermath was devastating, the whole area on one side of IH-35 no longer was there when I went to Dallas a couple weeks later to bowl a tournament. I couldn't sleep for weeks if the wind blew.

Aint Doody
04-03-2009, 10:03 AM
I said "tornado drills," but it was what we called it when we were under a watch or warning. We spent hours in our positions until the weather had passed. And Mr., I can relate to your description. Being a teacher, we had to try to keep everybody under control. It was awful and terrifying.

Aggie_Ama

We called both practice and for real drills Doody so I knew what you meant but also meant we unfortunately got the real stuff more than once. :(

3:00 pm ET
Tornado watch OK, KS, MO, AR: A tornado watch was recently issued for eastern Oklahoma, southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri and extreme western Arkansas.

The tornado watch is in effect until 9 pm CT. The SPC warns of hail up to 3 and a 1/2 inches in diamater (larger than baseballs), thunderstorm wind gusts to 80 mph and tornadoes that could become strong (EF3 or greater) and long-lived.

Tuckervill and BabyBlue, looks like you are in the storm now. Be careful and keep your eyes on the skies.

We had some hail while it was screaming through, but it is just raining now. The sky has that sickly green color that always makes me think tornadoes. They all seem to be happening down south, though.

Tulsa is already in the clear.

A few years ago I was the choreographer for our school musical. I thought that it was a bit "risque" for high school, but the director disagreed. The superintendent of our district showed up to see the performance on the 2nd night and right before the local "bad girl" sang her awful song, the siren went off. We were in the hall for an hour. Tornado touched down but no damage and no one hurt. Couldn't finish the show and he never saw the song I was so worried about. Divine intervention?

To all of us in tornado alley...be careful out there! Spring is in the air.

We were at our favorite little diner for breakfast when we got a call that the storm was headed our way. We hurried through our meal and headed back to town when the storm met us. It was a huge wall of darkness with rain and wind. We passed a cyclist who was battling the wind and rain and offered to give him a ride but he declined. No wind damage here but tornados are popping up everywhere.

From the Weather Channel:

9:56am ET
Derecho tearing through KS, MO, AR:

A violent derecho which earlier bulldozed through southeastern Kansas, is now tearing its way through Missouri and northern stretches of Arkansas.
What is a derecho? It's a violent, quickly moving and long-lived thunderstorm complex that travels long distances and produces destructive winds typically on the order of 50 to as much as 100 mph (perhaps even more!). As you can see in the imagery above, it also takes on the form of a curvature shape; sometimes referred to as a bow echo.
So as the definition goes, this complex has had a history this morning of producing structural damage such as tearing roofs off of houses and buildings.

Notable storm reports associated with derecho:

Wichita, KS (4 to 5 am CT): 50 to 60 mph winds, torrential rains, large hail.

New Albany, KS (5:52 am CT): 1 fatality - woman was found in the remains of her mobile home.

Carthage, MO (7:15 am CT): 93 mph wind gust.

Joplin, MO (7:48 am CT): Wind gust to 85 mph. Winds were gusting upwards of 50 mph for close to 40 min. Windows blown out of downtown buildings.

Springfield, MO (8:07 am CT): Tornado was spotted on the ground near Springfield. Winds gusted to 66 mph around 8:15 am CT.

Norwood, MO (9:00 am CT): Norwood post office lost roof and blew across train tracks according to train crew.

Rolla-Vichy, MO (9:04 am CT): Wind gust to 58 mph. Received 2.16 inches of rain from 8 to 9 am CT.

Doniphan, MO (10:30 am CT): Numerous trees down in Ripley County. Two main buildings in downtown Doniphan lost their roofs.

1 mile south of Poplar Bluff, MO (10:50 am CT): Missouri Highway Patrol reported a tree fell on a car. The car then caught on fire and 2 people in side were killed.

4 miles SE of Caledonia, MO (11:29 am CT): Tornado on the ground in the vicinity of Missouri Highways 32 and 21 slightly south of the Washington County line.

We'll be following this derecho event throughout the day and will provide you with damage reports and excessive wind, rain reports. Check back to see the latest. As you can imagine, severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings are popping up left and right as the derecho moves through.

7:44am ET
What's on tap for Friday?

South

A cold front will slide into the Tennessee Valley and stall out this weekend.
Today, the front should extend from southern Kansas eastward to the Virginia coast.
Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches are possible by Monday morning across southern Kansas, eastern Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, northern Georgia, northern Alabama, northern Mississippi, Arkansas and northeast Texas.

Be careful everyone and keep your eyes on the skies.

SHELTER. GET UNDER A WORKBENCH OR OTHER PIECE OF STURDY FURNITURE. IF
NO BASEMENT IS AVAILABLE...SEEK SHELTER ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF THE
BUILDING IN AN INTERIOR HALLWAY OR ROOM SUCH AS A CLOSET. USE
BLANKETS OR PILLOWS TO COVER YOUR BODY AND ALWAYS STAY AWAY FROM
WINDOWS.

IF IN MOBILE HOMES OR VEHICLES...EVACUATE THEM AND GET INSIDE A
SUBSTANTIAL SHELTER. IF NO SHELTER IS AVAILABLE...LIE FLAT IN THE
NEAREST DITCH OR OTHER LOW SPOT AND COVER YOUR HEAD WITH YOUR HANDS.

A TORNADO WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT FOR CENTRAL
EAST TENNESSEE.

ASammy1, thank you for the title. :) I do try to be the weather alertist for our TE'ers.

Oakleaf, did you bring in your laundry yet before it blew into the next county? ;)

It's finally calm here. This was a nasty storm with stalled thunderclouds, constant lightning and thunder. I was really glad to bid it adieu.

We lost power last night, although the storm wasn't nearly as bad as one we had earlier in the week. Thanks for the updates, Sundial!

I would just like for it to please please please stop raining and ruining EVERYTHING. In two weeks, we've had only 2 nights of youth baseball. This screws up everything!

Tuck, I wish we could send it to California. Our river is about to reach the same flood levels as last years flood. :( I don't think we'll have "normal" weather again.

Tulip, you're welcome. :)
