Close to home we like to ride Bragg Creek or Canmore trails. That's about 45min to 1hour from Calgary, but really fun rides!

Where do your friends ride?

One of the girls that I ride with has been in the Fernie area for a while, and the guys that my BF and I ride with head to Whistler a couple of times a year. I myself am a bit more interested in the other options that you are riding, in order to branch out from the coast if we head out for a vacation.

what's the terrain like, the trails etc?

sorry, I didn't get the lingo there, dh, xc... now I do.

We've got it all! Depending on where you go. Bragg Creek (in Kananaskis Country) is a lot more cross-country (xc) with the occassional wooptie-do up/down hill (again depending on the trail). Canmore/Banff you are getting into the mountains and see a lot more hills to climb/descend from. Very fun and usually technical as crazy! I love the mountain air too!:D

Hey! I'm in Montreal right now but will be moving into Vancouver in September to start a PhD at UBC. Anybody knows of a nice cycling club in town? I'm not into mountain bike, just road... but I could eventually try mtb (although I'd have to find a bike). I don't race... (yet?)

I will talk to my friends in Van when I get a chance, but in the meantime, you can check with these two bike shops that we've dealt with. I know John Henry has organized rides, and I'd be surprised if Dizzy doesn't...

If there's nothing about rides on the web sites, send them an email. Hopefully, someone will get back to you pretty quick!

I bike commute for work--then spend my free days riding around. I am Not a speedy cyclist--just rather slow and steady. For other folk here from Ottawa--yes-I know about the Ottawa bike club and the Kanata one--but unfortunately--both clubs have told me--I need to go a little faster than what I can sanely manage--hence--it is disappointing --that I cannot manage to be out for their rides. The Kanata spokesperson said I was welcome to come along-but might end up riding alone. That wasn't quite what I had in mind..............Also--I tried to get gay women interested in casual Sunday rides here--as--again--the Ottawans on the list would know--the parkways are shut down on the Sunday mornings during the summer-just For roller bladers and cyclists---and it's nice to have the whole road along the Rideau Canal or the Ottawa River, for an entire morning of riding. Anyway--couldn't get any takers for this either........Mostly I enjoy my long jaunts--and take great pleasure in getting to stop along the way, bring the binoculars for bird watching--see deer and fox, too.

What? They don't have at least one "friendly no drop" ride?! That's...that's just rude and and....I'm speachless which is rare for me, ask anyone here ;-)

So I take it they all fell outta the womb that fast? No help gettin there? Keep up or you're gone, well that sucks 6 year old rotten eggs.

"tried to get gay women interested in casual Sunday rides here-....-couldn't get any takers for this either".

Yeah, we can be a sedentary bunch, like a lot of folks.

We have a Gay bike club in Northern CA called DifferentSpokes, I rode one ride with them, maybe it was just that day I did not feel enough was done to instruct the beginners, no safety speach, or advice from experienced rides like "don't run the lights" etc. I'll give them another chance. I prefer rideing with a diverse mixed clubs, men, women, my local women's bike club, the TE gals and their men-folk. But I'm always at or near the back of the pack.

That is Kanata's loss, back of the pack is where the fun is ;-) Besides, this is why the sport is not growing as it should, clubs need to nurture new and returning riders. Getting off my soapbox now, going back to my country. ;)

can you get to Oakland, CA on October 9th?

It's a meteric century (with shorter ride options) that benefits the Breast Cancer Fund. There are at least 3 of us TE'ers doing the ride.

Congrats on trying to organize your own ride, not easy to do I'm sure.

The woman I spoke to--from the Kanata club--as I had to explain--Why I can't ride at the speed of light--about the part that has been taken out of me--made a suggestion to contact another member--for Next season--who might have suggestions--for those of us who simply go slower. So--maybe next spring--I'll look them up again............What I lack in speed--I make up for in endurance. I really am out there--right up until the snow flies--and I am very comfortable at 15km/hr. I can of course go faster--depending on wind direction and cross winds and hill grades--sometimes very comfortably at 20km/hr. I am Very used to everyone passing me--but it would be Nice--to have some company for casual rides. I am as equally disappointed in not being able to raise lesbians to come out. Some of that-yes-lack of interest--some--really intimadated by the exertion-some-in other types of biking-like fast club rides and mountain terrain rides--and obviously--sexual politics.

JLD wrote "I had to explain--Why I can't ride at the speed of light"

jeesh, I don't think you'd need to explain or justify, does not make you any less of a cyclist. What do they do if one of their members is injured? Tell them to go away till they can ride at ___km?

Reminds me of the tales of Emily's club rideing with her while she recovered from her break, now THAT's a club, supportive. Jobob's club has an academy each year for new/returning riders. One of the things I like about my club, the Velogirls is the feeling that no rider is left behind.

"What I lack in speed--I make up for in endurance." Don't need to explain that here, "ride your own ride" is the TE moto I think.

"I am as equally disappointed in not being able to raise lesbians to come out."

Yes, it's very hard to raise lesbians sucessfully but my family did a wonderful job with me. Sorry, could not resist the pun and play with idiom.

Hat's off for trying to get your own ride going when the local club would not support it. Who knows, by next Spring our Canadian gals here may have your own version of what's becoming a regular Corvalis OR group and our Northern Calif. riders.

Hello from another Canadian "girl". :)

My home town is Red Deer, Alberta but I lived in Sarnia Ontario for 6 years and as of a year ago I make my home near Pittsburgh, PA. Went from gently rolling parkland (Red Deer) to completely flat terrain (and I mean FLAT) in southern Ontario. Since coming to Pittsburgh I have become a much better cyclist because it is HILLY here!

Yep-I'll bet it's a Huge difference between the different terrains! For me--since I am from Montreal-which is also partially buillt on a small mountain-I can appreciate the flatter areas here in Ottawa!

you may be a Canadian...

You're not offended by the term, "Homo Milk"
You understand, "Could you please pass me a serviette, I just spilled my poutine."
You know what it means to be on 'pogey'.
You know that "a mickey" and "2-4's" mean "Party at the cabin, eh!!"
You don't hold your hand on your breast when you sing the national anthem.
You can drink legally while still a 'teen'.
You don't give a hoot about the fuss with Cuba, it's just a cheap
place to travel to and has good cigars.
You're not sure if the leader of our nation has EVER had sex and don't want to know if he has!
You get milk in bags as well as cartons and plastic jugs.
You know that Mounties "don't always look like that."
You know that Canada is the only country to successfully invade the
US and burn its capital to the ground.
You dismiss all beers under 6% alcohol content as "for children and
the elderly, and for export to the US".
You are excited whenever an American television show mentions Canada.
You believe "the Canadian Conspiracy" should have won an Oscar.
You laugh afterward at some U.S. citizens' lack of knowledge of
Canadian geography, but you are too polite to correct them.
You design your Hallowe'en costume to fit over a snowsuit.
You have more miles on your snowblower than your car.
You owe more money on your snowmobile than your car.
At least twice a year, the kitchen doubles as a meat processing plant.
You frequently clean grease off your barbeque so the bears won't prowl on your deck.
The municipality buys a Zamboni before a bus.
You know which leaves make good toilet paper. :D

I was born and raised in North West Québec, been living in T.O. for way too long and now am in the midst of moving to San Diego. Sorry ladies. But the prospect of making US $$$ & actually getting recognized as a bone fide cyclist - by a cycling association that actually cares was just too appealing, ( NOt like Lori-Ann Muenzer who was abandonned by the CCA). Not to mention not having to wear 15 layers of clothes in the SPring, Fall and Winter. Makes great padding in the even of a crash, but still....

Actually to me cycling is a very chatty sport, especially on some rides.

I was out with my club last week and our coach was really holding us - despite the gorgeous weather! - so that we wouldn't ride too fast. Base miles season. Anyway, the pack of 12 girls got very gossipy, everyone had plenty of breath to talk, I thought it was great.

Well the CGV is certainly not a place to have a "ride", but for skills training, it's great. We did quite a bit of fast pacelining, intervals, things like that last summer. There's a few experienced cyclists and coaches around, and some triathletes, and it's a great bunch. There should also be other rides all summer. I hope to see you there. :)

Am new here, but not new to cycling. Hailing from Vancouver, BC.

Before I cycled for over a decade in Toronto before moving where I am now.

I was involved in a women's cycling group for a few years in Toronto. We had to fold the group because we couldn't find volunteers to take over us, the organizing committee.

I have been cycle commuting to work, at times, it's gotten complicated because of where I work/weather, etc. Ride regularily on weekends for destressing and fitness. have done loaded bike touring in eastern part of Canada, Hawaii, etc. Out of town trips with my partner who is a (high active) local cycling advocate. (He himself has done loads of cycling ..across Canada and US).

I have to admit the prairies have made it easy to start riding. I work in Chestermere and commuted by bike for 6 months in 2007. I couldn't ask for a flatter ride. When the wind cooperated it was the easiest thing in the world. I road to Irricanna one day and I think there was only one small coulee the whole ride. East of the city is just awesome for well paved roads with no traffic and no hills.

Popoki_Nui

Sometimes, when I'm grinding up a hill here (cursing and wondering why I moved to probably the lumpiest part of the country), I think about riding in a much flatter area like you are. Oh well. :)

Hi other Canadians, as especially other Vancouver Islanders! I've been lurking here for a while, feeling all sad not having a road bike, and not seeing one in the budget. Mountain biking has lost some of it's enjoyment for me, this area being extremely hilly, and the trails all rocks 'n' roots .

Then just before Christmas, lo and behold, in the window of a pawn shop, calling to me:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r210/nansel/Giant.jpg
Yay! We got a bargain on it, and I've been tweaking it to fit me in the last couple of weeks. Today there was actually some sun, so I went out for an hour or so. It was awesome.

What is the cycling like in Nanaimo? Any good scenic paths/trails and/or relatively safe road routes one could ride as a day trip?

I need a change of scenery: been riding the same roads in Victoria for almost 40 years...I'm bored to tears! It'd be worth the drive just to find a nice change of scenery.

Thanks!

Nansel

Well, for a short answer, I'd say "Not really". Lots of stop lights and not many roads that you can get going on for any distance, other than the Island Highway. The ride from Nanaimo to Parksville (35km) on the highway is probably the nicest ride I've ever done around here, but that was almost 20 years ago back when I had my first road bike!

We only have two paths - the E&N trailway is really short (8km). The Parkway Trailway is 20km but full of really short and steeps with lots of blind spots where you can't see the occasional dog walker or kid weaving across the path ahead of you.

The roads in Cedar (rural area) are popular place to road ride around here, but I haven't as of yet tried them. I've been mountain biking and commuting (15 minutes) for the last 10 years or so, and haven't tried many road routes. I know from driving that the roads are pretty narrow and people tend to drive fast.

Compared to other cities I've lived in (Ottawa, Winnipeg), Nanaimo is not very roadie friendly.

Ok, thanks. Kind of as I suspected, as we really never hear of Nanaimo being a cycle-friendly city. Still might make an interesting day of discovery one day this summer.

I've cycled twice in Nanaimo since we've moved here to Vancouver in late 2002. We did a ride with one of the local groups, Chain Ring Gang or name similar to that, where we cycled from Duncan through the Cowichan Valley area. There are some interesting people in Nanaimo area, including a cyclist who is over 82 -85 yrs. old. I could never forget the time, when he was cycling with us on a drizzly, rainy day about 15 degrees C. He was in shorts while the rest of us were more well protected from rain.

My partner has done alot more cycling on Vancouver Island than I have..since he is retired now. I am certain we will end up in your neck of the woods, since I would love to see famed rainforest park near Parksville..

As a note about victoria, we seem to go to Victoria and surroundings by bike several times annually. Yea, well we have to leave home before 5:00 am by bike, to catch the lst ferry to Vancouver island.. for me to power nap and be awake on time, while we are cruising by the Gulf Islands. :)

I wish I could get another bike in Montreal but I won't have money to spend until after school is over and I enter the real world. :o I really wanted to take mine but I can only take what fits in our truck and I can't ask my parents to do more than one 9 hour moving drive. I'm going to sign up for spin as soon as I get there. And since I'm trying to do tris I'm going to sign up for stroke improvement, too. Hopefully that will keep me happy and not missing my Jake.

I'm not in Toronto, right now I live about 2.5-3 hours north of Toronto. Which is probably good in a way because I can ride on quiet country roads. I'm still a bit leary of riding in too much traffic. It has been crazy rainy this summer, but I love it. It doesn't bother me at all. I'd take rain over snow any day I think.

I see you're in Vancouver, how do you like it there? I've been listing the places I might move after graduation and I think I'd really like it there.

As a suggestion, if you ever return to Montreal by train, to bring your bike onboard.

Vancouver is best appreciated after living in other parts of Canada/the world. Yes, with the exception of rain during winter, it's great. Cycling is nearly year round.

Just brace yourself for accommodation costs in Vancouver, if you ever want to relocate here. Montreal is cheaper.. and so is Toronto.

Agreed with Shootingstar: it's a very good looking place, and the weather is not that bad if you like the rain (I LOVE the green so I can endure the rain), but it is a really expensive place to live in. Everything (not just accommodation) is more expensive. Childcare, supposedly, is one of the worst in Canada. Salaries, unfortunately, do not quite follow the cost of living. It's just a different mindset, paying about 50% of your income (or more) for rent.

Hmm, sounds like Vancouver is a good place to think about after I've established myself a little bit with a career and some money in the bank. I like the rain and the beauty appeals to me, maybe I can just visit for awhile and see where life takes me. I think I'm just a bit antsy to get out and start a new chapter.

It's a good idea about taking my bike on the train. I take Via all the time so that could work out well. I will be taking my cycling shoes with me since I know I can use them for spinning now.

Actually, quite a ways from Toronto - I'm in Thunder Bay - around 1500 km and a world away from To.

Very active cycling group here; Club that I get out with when I can has weekly tour rides (mostly road bikes) although they do have some scheduled rides later in the season with routes more suitable for MTB. A couple other organized groups as well. Started commuting a couple of days a week and am surprised at the number of cyclists doing the same.

I'm rather envious of your more temperate climate and MUCH longer season in Vancouver - we're hoping for a long fall this year!

Hello from another Vancouver girl. Cheers! And welcome to TE. Where do you like to ride?

I've been communting back and forth to work for the last 12 or so years now. The ride is only 20 mins each way but I love it... rain or snow. Recently, my BF bought me a road bike (Speicalized Ruby Elite) and thus is why I've been doing more research on websites such as this. Before, I had only hand me down tanks from my younger brother. So having such a light bike is heaven!

I would love to do more longer rides. The longest one I've done so far is 50km with the MS bike Ride 10 years ago (yes, with the tanker bike). Now with the road bike, the longest I've done is only 42km. I would like to ride longer but I find the saddle is killing me. I just replaced the seat with a Jett today. I've heard good and bad things in this website regarding the Jett but my LBS suggest I give it a try for a week. I guess we'll see.

As to my favourite areas to ride, all I've really done is ride down to the seawall to Stanley Park and then loop back out to Point Grey and back home in east van. Have you got a good area you can recommend? I've heard some people said Richmond, but riding over the bridge looks scary.

I used to live and cycle in Toronto. (actually I lived in Scarborough with East Toronto, just across the street. :)) Cycling there was for nearly 10 years. Yea, Mississauga is friggin' sprawly..on a long ride homeward, as we chugged along the bike, I would think...when is Mississsauga gonna be over! I passed through your municipality when my partner and I did different touring rides to Hamilton, Orangeville, Guelph-Elora-Kitchener-Waterloo-St. Jacobs-Elmira, etc. I'm sure the Caledon Hills area ..if it's not too north for you, would be lovely right now at this time of year. As you know the Waterfront trail takes you east all the way out even to ....as far east as Coburg, Ontario..near Brighton. Approx. 120 kms. east of Toronto near Lake Ontario. but it's probably 160 kms. from your house.

The Toronto Bicycling Network was a fairly large active group with different rides, however I don't know what the Mississauga membership was. I'm not familiar with the roadie training scene.

I still think of Toronto..my birth family and their families live in GTA and whenever I visit ...I borrow a sister's bike for bike ride every day ...which used to be my bike for 9 years before I gave it to her when I moved out to Vancouver. :)

Though Mississaugua is a 704,000 strong sprawling burb if you live in west Mississauga you can be out in the country fairly quickly.

Eglinton turns into Lower Base Line and you can take 5th line or 6th line north to Steeles, a little jog left on Steeles , back on 5th or 6th and you can ride for hours in the country. Or follow Lower Base further west...and explore the farmlands that surround Burlington, Milton, Carlisle.

On the weekend, I often drive about 30 minutes north, park the car and have a blast in the Halton Hills. Take Erin Mills Pkwy (turns into Mississauga Rd) north to Terra Cotta. There's a little school on your left, Creditview Public School. (King Rd and Missisauga Rd). Park at the school, assemble your bike and explore. Cheltenham, Belfountain, Alton, Glen Williams, Georgetown await you.

I've heard nothing but good things about Brampton Cycle Club. http://www.bramptoncyclingclub.com/ They have organized rides every weekend, some during the weekdays, time trials and all sorts of other fun.

Sunny Vancouver? Where's that? I'm from rainy Vancouver. And I work in Richmond, so I get to commute over that new skytrain bridge every day! It's great, but 20 blocks of up-hill when I'm going back into Vancouver is something I have to get use to...

I'm from N.B. and N.F.L.D originally.

Welcome to TE, Antaresia.

And it's definitely sunny Vancouver today.

I'm American-Canadian. American by birth, but Canadian by choice. I've been a citizen for 6 years now, and I live in Vancouver. Hi!
