When my friend Suzanne and I ride we have people yell at us and throw things occasionaly. When I ride with my husband, nothing. What a difference riding with a male makes. I know I live in redneck land (Arkansas), but this really chaps my hide!

I experience the same thing here in your redneck neighbor state of OK... sometimes. Sometimes cars seem nicer when it's just me, sometimes they seem to be more aggressive when a man is with me. I guess it just depends on which type of redneck it is: the bully who will pick on anyone, the mommas boy who won't mess with a woman, or the male dominant type who likes to pick on men in spandex. It's always a gamble who you'll get.

I'm your neighbor also. I have never experienced any of this. I tend to ride in rural Missouri, and rural Illinois. I've never had anything thrown at me. Last summer I rode over the Big Dam Bridge and through Little Rock a bit. I also did a few "touristy" things there. I have to say that Little Rock is absolutely the friendliest city I have ever been in! I'm not kidding. Everywhere I went it was the same friendly, helpful attitude. Part of what made me go back for the Tour de Pumpkin in Russellville, AR. Same thing. I enjoyed the heck out of my trips down there.

I feel your pain! Been there, done that.
Rednecks are alive and well here in rural Indiana.

Ditto. You just never know. Sometimes drivers of gnarly ol' pick-up trucks can be the nicest, friendliest people you'd want to meet; other times they're mean and nasty and would kill you with a look if they could. My heart always skips a beat when I'm riding on a desolate stretch of rural road and see a truck approaching. (Please, no offense, anyone -- one of the vehicles I drive is a an old pick-up -- I know they're not all out to get us.)

Check yourself out and make sure you're not doing something that drivers don't appreciate (riding two abreast and not letting them pass when it is safe to do so). If you're okay there, then maybe find a different route?
What part of Arkansas? I'm in Siloam Springs!

You're kidding. My D*H's grandmother was from Siloam Springs. Small world. Her name was Edna and was a volunteer at the hospital there right up into her early 90s when her daughters took her to live with them down in Texas. She passed away last year.
Beautiful country there. You've got some great hills!

I love my little town. You should come and ride some time.
