This (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/08/nyregion/thecity/08bike.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=nyregion) is a long but really good and insightful story.
I can attest to the accuracy of the author's description of mayhem on the Brooklyn Bridge.
Today I saw police activity (including a hovering helicopter) while biking on the bridge. As I pedaled toward the action, I imagined grim scenes involving a bike and a toddler, but instead found the cops escorting a confused-looking gentleman to an ambulance. I think they feared he was going to jump, though I'm not sure. He was wearing a hospital bracelet and didn't have his shirt on quite right.
Back to the article -- I do hope bikers take this author's comments to heart. And I wish parents would keep small children out of the Brooklyn Bridge bike lane.
