View Full Version : SILLY helmet ideas?

OK, so am doing a sponsored bike ride during the summer with some friends, nothing amazing, just for fun.

BUT I need help/ideas with how I can make my helmet look, well, just plain silly.

I realise I have to be careful of using any adhesives because of weakening the helmet, or something like that.

You guys over the pond, always seem to come up with some pretty amazing ideas, so who better to ask. :D

No theme at the moment, just to be done for a laugh.

Cheers.

If you pull a stretchy novelty wig over the helmet like a helmet cover you could pin all sorts of stuff to the wig...
First image I got was a nice set of blonde braided pig tails and a viking helmet

Lots of things can be rubber banded on through the vent holes too (I use a pony tail holder to put a LED flashlight on my helmet when I commute at night)

Pinwheels are a GREAT idea! Our local team that trains for the Leukemia/Lymphoma society bike rides decorates their helmets on ride day with pipe cleaners fashioned into tornadoes. They attach flying cows, houses, etc and it looks hilarious. I'll try to find a picture. Of course, nobody over there might know what a tornado is so it may not hold the same humor. Is there something regionally funny/silly that would make people laugh? Don't know- that's not a good idea, but it's the only one my brain comes up with at the moment.

I like the wig idea, too. You ladies are quite creative. I put a santa hat on my helmet near Christmas- that would not be good in the summer.

Deely-boppers. The possibilities are nearly endless! I'm thinking of getting some shamrock ones.

Zip ties (http://www.9thtee.com/zipties.htm) all over the helmet can give a porcupiney look...

How about a nice tiara? I did the 5 Boro Bike Tour with a cardboard crown zip-tied to my helmet :)

I saw a motorcycle helmet with a face painted on the back. It was so well-done that I had to make a second look to see what the heck was going on! Anyway, if you could add a face under the wig so it looked like you were riding backwards.

Thanks for all the good ideas, funny why I never think of the obvious sometimes.

Any pics would be super to see.

Cheers.

How about ribbons that stream in the wind behind you?

One of my LCI buddies picked up one of those little squeaky frogs that LBSes often sell for bike horns at a seminar last December... Turns out it wouldn't fit on the handlebars, so he zip-tied and super-glued it elsewhere...

We were out on the club ride yesterday when we went past a little girl on the side of the trail, who exclaimed, "hey, there goes that guy with the gummi-bear on his helmet!"

Or, while I'm not into patriotic stuff, you could give Sheldon Brown a nod with an eagle or other bird. No one would understand the joke, probably.

Then again you are in the UK, so a flag topper (that's what Sheldon had on his) wouldn't be easy to come by.

I second the tiara idea... I have a sparkly pink kids one from a toy shop zip-tied to the top of my kayaking helmet and it and it's "diamonds" have stuck with me through a lot! :D

Pan-Mass-Challenge riders are partial to "Beanie Babies" and other stuffed toys on their helmets. One team is called "Team Kermit" and they all have Kermet the frog attached to their helmets. Rubber Duckies are another popular one, as are ears & tails http://www.pmc.org/mypmc/gallery.asp?year=2008&Gallery=PMC_2008_Lakeville_Freetown&Event=2008ride http://www.pmc.org/mypmc/gallery.asp?Year=2008&Gallery=PMC_2008_Highlights&Event=2008highlights http://www.pmc.org/mypmc/gallery.asp?year=2008&Gallery=PMC_2008_Lakeville_Freetown&Event=2008ride

Would be kinda neat to attach a contraption to helmet that continously produced soap bubbles as you rode along..... :D

So many fun wigs to choose from here. ;)
http://decodermot.com/wigs2.htm

I like the rag doll wig. I also like the Colonial wig.
Might be hot in the summer, but I think they're a fun idea.

I'm going on a week long bike ride this summer also, and now I want to do something crazy, too.

Hey, more replies than I thought I would receive.

Thanks soooooo much.

It has given me a lot of ideas, have a cunning plan of what to do now, so in a couple of weeks will post a photo, I hope.

Whatever I choose, am definitely getting some Goofy Droopy Eyes for the back, thanks OakLeaf.

Apparently when you stitch together a REEEEEALLY silly helmet , it can be sold for thousands as the height of fashion. This is a pic a local paper had of garments they saw at the recent Paris fashion week. I wonder if it comes with batteries. Lights and bells would certainly help with visibility, and flapping wings might help you with some extra lift up hills. :D

Well, finally finished my helmet, the theme is based upon the route we are doing. Last year I rode the City Route in London, this year it is to be the Scenic Route, which goes via the Thames then through Richmond Park. Now Richmond Park is famous for deer.

So, I thought I could be the "Old Dear"!

I am not the domesticated sewing type of person but am pretty nifty with tubes of glue, I could ride through a gale force wind and my ears would not move. :D

Took a gamble by heating up an old thin screwdriver and made elongated holes, so I now have the air vents exposed.

Bike is all up together, helmet ready, now I just need me to be fit enough. Only 4 days to go.

Thanks for the kind words.

Well, if I am able to ride the weather here is forecast for rain on Sunday but at least everything is glued on well and is waterproof. :D

12 hours to go before I see my Dr, so fingers crossed.

YES, YES, YES!!!

I got the all clear from my GP this morning, BP gone down to 160/84, still not as low as it should be but I can ride on Sunday.

Nobody will ever know how happy I am about that. The last 4 months I have spent motivating and encouraging so many in our Team, then it ends up I need the help.

Texts have been flying around non-stop today, so many lovely good wishes for my good health on Sunday.

I WILL GET TO WEAR MY DEAR DEER HELMET! YAY! :D

Woohoo!! Can't wait to see pics and hear about your ride! Try not to drink too much caffeine on ride day -- it will drive up your b.p. And drink plenty of fluids.
