I received an information catalog from Selle SMP and saw these awesome bib shorts with a zipper in the crotch.

Does anyone have these?? I'm very interested to know how they work out. A zipper seems like such a good idea for long rides.... :p

Where, uhm, exactly does the zipper go?

Everywhere I can think of that would be convenient also seems painful...?

Yes, that was my thought too (where does the zipper go while you ride..)....which is why I'm so curious about it. The concept is great but the functionality...well...who knows ;)

I see a whole new thread on zipper sores coming. Ouch!

I see a zipper working for guys, but how does a zipper work for girls? It isn't like we can umm how else should I say this..just whip it out?

I think the idea is that it unzips completely from the front to the back of the crotch allowing women to squat without having to take off the bibs.... ;) :p

Is it just me or does it seem like the zipper design has potential for undesirable injuries.....

Had to look it up to get an idea:

I would rather get the LG bibs that have the straps that unhook! Seems much comfier. This looks way to confusing and painful to me!(must of been a man's idea!!)

Looks just a little like something from Fredericks of Hollywood (or whatever those old porny stores are). It may well be very functional - but

Now I'm gonna have nightmares.

Me too.
Just thinking about it!....the riding on the zipper factor...the possible zipper 'failure' mid-ride (just imagine it splitting open as zippers are sometimes wont to do!)....the 'zipper hygiene issues'....hairs getting caught....the seam right down the middle of the chamois
....and that photo!

It's just so wrong.

I think the Castelli bibs have lost their top spot in the splitter division.

You know that scene in "Something about Mary" right in the beginning when he gets caught in Mary's bathroom before the prom..."We got a bleeder". It could happen! It's all fun and games until the skin gets caught. I'll pass.

I've had ski or mountaineering bibs that had that feature... and have some base layers that hvae the full crotch zip as well.

I get that if you're climbing everest or up on some mountain being able to use such a zipper's probably a lot more comfortable... and it's probably cold enough, it's not like hygiene matters...

But I can't say I see why it's necessary for biking

You would really want to avoid getting hair caught in those too! Yow! that is too weird. Tokie

Actually, I have a pair of "windstopper," very warm Hincapie winter bib tights that have a zipper at the top of the crotch area. It doesn't go down that far, though.

I don't think I would try the full-zone zipper bibs short, though.

The photo is cringe-inducing  :o

The idea is excellent - but requires really good sewing and design to work. Maybe they've pulled it off, I think I'd be too nervous to try. :p

My mountaineering bibs just have full-length side zippers, I unzip from the top down to about the knee for calls of nature.

A while back a few outdoor clothing companies were making mountaineering/climbing stuff for women with crotch zippers. They required a level of coordination and dexterity to use them properly (ie without getting soaked) that I'll never achieve. I don't know if they still make them.

I can't even imagine sitting on a zipper for any length of time.

Yes, I totally understand why someone thought it would be a good idea to make natural breaks easier when for women who prefer bib shorts. But it freaks me out to even think about a zipper between me and the saddle.

The photo reminds me of the poor downhill skier who literally tore himself up in an accident a few years back.

"Cringe" is an understatement.

I'm fine with taking off my shirt sleeves and pulling down the straps, thanks.

If I had to strip naked from one of those bibs that goes under my bra, I'd prefer that to sitting on a zipper.

What kind of bib goes under your bra?

These (http://www.cbike.com/ProductImages/assos/assos_FI_13_lady_S5_blk.jpg). There was a thread about them (either the shorts or the advertising) a while back.

I think the splitter is supposed to go over your bra. (Or, that you're not supposed to wear anything else, like the model. At least, I think that's how the designers envisioned it.)

That model has significantly different bra needs than I do.

Just as I have long suspected....that Assos company is not really selling 'biking' clothes at all...HAH!....it's really just a front for selling kinky sex fetish wear!!!
(crotchless 'bibs', anyone?)

MP is right as verified by TE. Assos just uses a different, ahem, marketing spin.

Those bibs are made to use with the SMP saddle... which doesn't contact the body where it would be putting pressure on the zipper. I can't imagine that anyone would be dumb enough to wear those while sitting on any other saddle.

Can you send me a pair of those rose-colored glasses you wear? :p

I can see that these bib shorts would only work w/ the SMP saddle - but I have a brilliant zipper bib short solution. I own a pair of bibshorts by a German company called 'Protective' - the zipper runs down the back & stops just below the small of your back. If you squat down you can just pull them down - works really well if you have lots of clothing on your top 1/2 so can't easily release (& more importantly - re-attach!) bibs w/ 'buckles'. Best of both worlds - the pad is brilliant & I think they come in longs too. They are so comfy (& solve the notorious toilet problem without any disadvantages) I will likely get a 2nd pair & also some longs. I got them from the Edinburgh Co-op which is the only place that sells them in the UK - don't know if they are available in the US - but if demand was great enough, I am sure they would find a distributor . . .

I have this vision of a pedal/cleat locking-type system, only with shorts and saddles. Like that scene in Contact where Jodi Foster is getting into the pod-chair with the special suit.

I had that thought about wearing them with that particular saddle, but if the shorts fit properly, the zipper's still getting pulled up into your parts.
