Has anyone done the Whiteface Mountain uphill race? I was thinking about doing it this June, and wondering if there is a way to do a preview climb before the race. I've heard that riding down is really dangerous, and that they don't allow bikes on the road when the gatehouse is open, so you have to do it when the park is closed, which means you can't leave your car at the top to drive down. Any ideas?

I did the run up Whiteface a few years ago and really enjoyed it! My memory is that the grade is not as steep as that of a lot of the other hillclimbs in the northeast- so while I wouldn't enjoy riding down, it would probably be do-able (and I'm pretty wimpy about big long downhills). What about leaving a car up there the day before you want to ride, and then riding up the next morning before the gatehouse is open (but timed so that it's open by the time you come back down in the car)?

I'm planning on doing that as welll this year. I have friends that live in that area, so I'll try and find out from them and let you know.
