I have friend who is 6'1" tall, and pants size inseam is 32". He has a Fuji road bike that is purported to be a 56cm frame, but it really seems way too small for him.
So I'm curious - what size frames do your 6'1" tall significant others ride? He wants to go the Craig's List route to find a new bike and I want to get him looking at a better size but don't know how far to go with this. We just need a better starting point.
Yeah, he SHOULD go to the local bike shop and try a few bikes out for size but that just isn't gonna happen. It's too easy that way. (Frankly I'm not really convinced he wants a bike at all but I'm humoring him for now.)

prolly will be more like a 59 or 60. Certainly not a 56.

That's about what I was thinking. Even with the seat raised up to the line, and pushed all the way back he wasn't even close...
What would that translate to in a frame size on a hybrid? He has a hybrid that's a 20" frame, but I think that is probably too small as well.

Also, check out the Fit Guide at competitivecyclist.com.
My husband (6'7") and I spent the morning going through the fit guide for him. He's currently riding a 25" Miyata frame from 1985, which translates to a 61cm frame (with the largest seat post and stem commercially available). The fit guide says he needs somewhere between a 65 and 69 cm frame, depending on the riding posture.
I found a 70 cm vintage Schwinn online, and am waiting to hear back about it. But as of today frames over 58 cm are hard to find. I haven't checked every craigslist in the country, though.
He probably really needs to know his cycling inseam before he goes any further. See above.

DH is 6'2" and rides a 58 cm Cannondale and Kona Jake. He has a long torso and wears a 32 inseam pant. Seems he is similar build to your friend and a 56 cm would be small on him. When we have seen 60 cm it looked like he would not have the standover height. The 56 cm is common on Craigslist here in Austin, 58 cm would take a little patience. :(

I'm 5'8" with a 34 " inseam. I can stand over a 60cm, but there is no "air" space. So it's hard for me to imagine that someone with a 32" inseam could stand over a 60cm.
I would think that you would be looking for a 58cm with the longest top tube you can find.
