View Full Version : Best way to catch up on missed training?

Hey all,
A few weeks ago I bought myself a turbo trainer and despite what everyone normally says about them I LOVE that thing! :D
Here's my question. I'm following a workout plan from a book (Workouts in a Binder for Indoor Cyclists - best book ever) and doing 5/6 sessions a week, but due to work/life I've missed a couple of days training. Over Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday I was supposed to make one speed then three endurance sessions of about an hour each. I'm happy to do both an endurance and speed session on a two-workout morning on Saturday, but not sure about doing two endurance sessions on Sunday. Should I just cut my losses and skip one of the endurance sessions, or has anybody got any better ideas?

Sometimes life gets in the way and that is that; we all have to take the odd day off from time to time. I'd say cut your losses and miss one endurance session. If you feel good on the day, you can always make the endurance session you do a bit longer than an hour.

I wouldn't worry too much about missing a workout here and there. What, specifically, are you training for? If it were me, I'd do just the speed workout on Saturday and then double up on the endurance workouts on Sunday, but that's mostly because endurance training, in my mind, is something that lasts longer than an hour. I'm not familiar with your training plan though.

Thanks for the support - you're right, skipping one session won't be the end of the world :)
The event I'm training for is a 24hr combined bike and hike (http://www.maggiescentres.org/monster) - 30 miles on trails on the bike then 43 miles hiking, eek! It's not until May but I've been using the bike to get my fitness level up before hitting the hills when the snow melts...
The training plan I'm working to is based on doing 5-6 sessions a week on the turbo that are typically 1-2hrs long, but hey, if the weather's good tomorrow I might even free my bike from the turbo's grip and head outside! ;)

Hmm, "how to catch up on missed training?"... umm, blood? sweat? tears?
HA lol... just kiddin':p;).
OK, serious advice...
As much as I used to be an "anaerobic junkie... go for the puke factor" kinda person, I say go for the endurance. I have really come to appreciate what endurance base building can do for you overall.
It will build up your capacity and make the next speed workout even harder because your body is fitter and it takes more to "get there". End result: you get more out of it.

Hehe, yeah, I used to have a tendency to consider any workout (various sports) too light if I didn't feel totaly wasted afterwards, but I'm really coming round to the idea of building base endurance steadily. Am really enjoying my training so far - finishing up on the turbo today my face actually hurt from smiling!

Chiming in late here, but I'm with the general consensus of this thread, WooHoo...
Training is like sleep - you can't really "catch up" or "get it back". You just have to continue from where you are (as hard as that can be).
