Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site at http://www.cdc.gov/ or call 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636).

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged to destroy them but retain the "Best By/Sell By" code found on the back of the package. Consumers with questions or who would like a refund may contact Clif Bar & Company at 1-800-CLIFBAR (1-800-254-3227). Details also can be found at www.clifbar.com.

"With an abundance of caution and given the FDA's ongoing investigation of PCA, we're doing all we can to ensure consumer safety and trust," said Gary Erickson, owner and founder of Clif Bar & Company.

Thank you, michelem! I have a box of six unopened "Crunchy Peanut Butter" Clif bars my DH got me for Christmas (plus two boxes of non-peanut flavors). Never even thought about them in relation to the salmonella outbreak - glad I haven't eaten any! Just filled out the form on the Clif site and will see what they say.

We just got the recall sheet in the shop from clif bar.
they are issuing refunds.

edit to add- if you read the expanded recall from the peanut company, they have included pet grade peanut butter/paste. So best to check your pets food/snacks as well.

My husband ate a peanut one Sunday. :o He is still feeling okay. I wonder if we can get credit through the LBS for the other one? I don't want to have to deal with Clif for one bar so I might just chunk it.

YES! Take the bar(s) back to the LBS. They will get a refund for it, so they shouldn't have a problem refunding you. All they have to do is fill out a form that clif sent, and they will get a check. SO any upstanding lbs should give you a refund. I think they may be forced to by law??

I haven't heard back from Clif yet (after filling out the website form). I wonder if I will? Don't think I still have the receipt for the box of 6 I have, since it was purchased before Christmas.

Thanks! It is a shop we frequent so I don't anticipate it being a problem. I have to go in tomorrow to get him tubes and gels for a race Saturday so I will just do it then. ;)

should not matter emily.

They were purchased at Wal-mart -- not sure if they are as friendly as an LBS about returns without receipts.... still no word from Clif. :(

I purchased a box of 24 at Sam's a couple of weeks ago. I took the box back today (we had consumed half the bars). I did not have the receipt so Sam's issued me a gift card for the full amount.

I don't think this was on there when I inquired - sounds like I should just sit tight for a little longer:

If you purchased the recalled bars, please destroy them but retain the BEST BY, SELL BY or EXPIRY DATE/DATE D’EXPIRATION code found on the back of the package.

Costco and Sam’s Club members should return any recalled products to your local club store for a full refund.

For all other consumers, contact us online or call 1-800-CLIFBAR (1-800-254-3227). Please note, we’re experiencing a high call and email volume, and are working to respond to all inquiries as quickly as possible.

Yikes! Back in Dec. I bought quite a few of the Crunchy Peanut Butter bars (my favorite flavor) and the Chocolate Chip Peanut Crunch bars. I'm down to one of each left and sure enough, the "sell by" dates fall within those on the recall list.

I've had tummy troubles for several weeks. I thought I had picked up a bug, but now I wonder if I got some tainted bars? :(

My husband, how shall I say it.... "bonked".... several hours after eating the recalled Cliff bar. He's an airline pilot and almost didn't make it through the terminal in LAS before finding a restroom.

I got an email response from a Clif rep yesterday, quite nice:

Dear Emily,

We are glad that you contacted us with your refund request and recalled bar information. I am emailing to confirm that we have received and processed your request for a refund.

We will fulfill your request as soon as possible, but please allow several weeks due to processing and mailing.

We urge you to throw away any of our recalled products to ensure no one mistakenly eats them. We do not need the wrapper so please dispose of them properly. No other Clif Bar & Company products or flavors are included in this recall.

Thank you again for contacting us. You have my sincere apology for your inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Allison
