View Full Version : And medicine finds nothing
Hi, everyone!
Well, I've had very few rides in the last few weeks. I've dropped out of the two races I was going to do.
I've been tested for a barage of ailments, and all of my tests read normal. (edit: for those who missed the earlier thread...I keep getting sick this training season)
There's only the stool sample and a follow-up urine sample to go...(fun, right?)
When I saw the homeopathic practitioner, she kind of scared me. But she did see a digestive problem that would be a contributor. Told me to stop taking almost all of my supplements, drink ginger root tea (the real stuff, not the bagged stuff), take this stuff called USNEA and Royal Jelly....and to stop eating bran and use ground flax seeds instead. Day two of having all of that going on and....well...I'm not loving it but I'll definitely give it a try for a few weeks. I'm surprised that my energy level hasn't gone completely rock bottom, but it's not all that high, either.
Have any of you tried any of these supplements / remedies before? Any thoughts? How did they feel to you?
This week I expect to have one or two really stressful days - I may have to work quite late, so I don't expect to be able to ride...at least not a lot. Wednesday I plan to ride with the gang, and hope that I make it through that alright. heh. I'll keep you posted.
Keep well, everyone,
Namaste,
~T~

My father in law was very depleted during chemo and was given royal jelly for energy and it seemed to perk him up. I had looked the stuff up and found out that it is the food eaten by the queen bee!

You said you had to drop out of a couple races... I used to teach aerobics and your story reminds me of overtraining and perhaps a mild case of pnumonia. When I first started to teach I worked soooo... hard and kept getting sick (it was very frustrateing) turned out the problem was a combination of the two.

LB, I'm like Justina... I'm wondering about over-training too... even with rest days in a week, sometimes the body wants a complete break and you might find taking a week off completely is just as helpful as anything else.
Keep us posted about the change in diet/supplements. I find that kind of thing very interesting.

I use flax seed. If you can, buy the seeds whole and store them in the fridge because they will go bad quickly otherwise. I bought a pepper mill this week and I put the seeds in that and store in the fridge. I grind them on yogurt, fruit, cereal whatever. They have to be ground. Good for your heart.
Sorry your not well. Sometimes the solution isn't always easy to find.
Thank you all, once again for your generous support! It's great to hear your ideas and to bounce my ideas off of all of you!
here's what I've found so far: The usnea tincture is fairly unpleasant to take, but not horrible. I don't know what exactly it's supposed to do, but I don't seem to have any negative response to it.
The ground flax seeds are easy. I've actually started putitng them in my cat's food too (hyperthyroid and mild kidney issues). 2 tablespoons on my cereal in the morning, another tablespoon with whatever later in the day.
the royal jelly is horrible. those vials are most disgusting! but, once it's down and the taste is gone from my mouth, there are no negative problems. It is very expensive. If I can find some alternative to it, I'd be quite happy.
the ginger root tea is curious. I know I've made it correctly (sliced ginger root placed in boiling water and simmered for at least 20 minutes), and it tastes just fine to me. Unfortunately, it burns - from my esophogus through my stomach, it burns for about 1/2 hour or so. It's like heartburn, sort of.
Have any of you drank ginger root tea before? Has anyone else experienced this burning sensation? oh, and that seems to be accompanied by a sort of light-headedness....anyone?
If no others have experienced this, it makes me wonder if my real problem is an allergy to ginger (something I'd thought I'd had a long time ago after a bite into ginger made my tongue go numb). It certainly would explain a lot!! With each onset of each new "cold" or "flu" I've increased my ginger intake: nibbling on crystalized ginger, drinking store bought ginger tea, adding crystalized ginger to my banana bread, making soup with loads of garlic and freshly grated ginger.
What do you think? Any chance of that?
As for overtraining - well, it's been about a month since I've done anything close to training. So, over the next few weeks I'll try to bring myself up to a level where I think starting makes sense (at least 2 rides in a week, plus one other workout), and see how that goes. I"ll keep you posted and thank you all for all the support and ideas!!
Namaste,
~T~

Hope it all goes away soon.

I agee with Veronica - cut out ginger. Food allergies can knock you down!
From transworldusa.com:
Usnea General Information
Usnea, also known as old man’s beard, is a lichen and is used medicinally. Usnea looks like long, fuzzy strings hanging from trees in the forests of North America and Europe, where it grows. Throughout history, herbalists have used Usnea to treat indigestion. The usnic acid in Usnea gives it a bitter taste.
Usnea Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Usnea contains mucilage which is helpful in easing irritating coughs. It is also used to treat colds, sore throats, and infections. This lichen has also been tested for use as an antibiotic and in test tube studies have suggested anti-cancer activity for usnic acid, but at this time the results do not warrant further investigation in humans.
Usnea Dosage Information
The standard dosage of Usnea is 100 mg 3 times per day in capsule form. If using a tincture, 3–4 ml 3 times per day, can also be used.
Usnea Safety & Interaction Information
There are no known side effects or drug interactions with Usnea and it is considered safe for use in children; however, the safety of Usnea during pregnancy and nursing is not known.

and yet, another friend just emailed me that ginger is supposed to burn...all the way down. how would i know if it's an allergy then?
Thanks for the info on usnea, snap! I did know that's the plant it came from, but wasn't sure which thing it was supposed to help with. I guess it's for digestion. :)
thanks!~

As Thom says, "Include me out of that plan."
I've had crystallized ginger and grated ginger and not experienced a burning sensation. And what about the lightheaded thing? If all that leads back to ginger, it sounds like an allergy could be the cause.

funny, it hasn't been until now that I'm drinking the stuff that the lightheadedness seems connected to the ginger. it's been one of the symptoms we've been trying to figure out.
okay, then, tomorrow I try a ginger free day. :o

the hardest thing about food allergies (ok most allergies) is the symptoms can be so - not what you expect. Allergies can make you think you have the flu, arthritis, indigestion, etc. The other problem is: it can take anywhere from instantaneous to over a week for a symptom to a food to manifest itself. and it takes your body up to 2 weeks to completely remove the offending food from your system. My allergist told me as I got older, I wouldn't be able to fight off allergic reactions to things like I could in my past like: strawberries! That being said: if you were allergic to ginger as a child, there's a good chance you're STILL allergic to ginger, you just didn't have as strong a reaction in the recent past OR you didn't reconize it for what it was. Like everyone else here said, cut the ginger out, but do it for at least a week if not longer. And then try the ginger tea again and see how you react. If you've increased your ginger to aid with your illness, you could actually be making yourself ill.
Corsair "you should see my diet due to food allergies" Mac
Thanks, Corsair....
'course I've never really been sure that I'm allergic to ginger. When I bit a chunk and my tongue got numb I thought that was a bad sign! When we cook nice meals they are alsmost always of some kind of oriental design, and always contain ginger (luckily we don't cook fancy very often). I've never really been able to finish a whole serving of kung pao....heh. I really love that type of food. And, well, thai food makes me feel euphoric. Kind of light headed and happy. Not sure what it is, but during our last thai meal out, it really increased when I bit into the basil leaf. That's enough to leave me even more confused!
I thought maybe the ginger thing was all in my head, so, just kept cooking with it and eating it. Our consumption has definitely gone up this spring, so, yeah, if that's it, I've just been making myself worse!! I just made a batch of banana bread *without* crystalized ginger.
I find I'm "allergic" to the most bizarre things. Onions of all things!! Make my intestines hurt wicked bad for hours!! and even leeks or green onions will do it, but I have no adverse reaction to garlic even though it's in the same family. And I get short of breath and fluttery if I eat aspartame. And the last time I had some soft drink with sucralose I was slammed with a 5 day migraine after a year of not one!
I've always figured I have other allergies, but I'm too impatient to try to figure them out. Nearly everything I eat will make me bloated. But that always passes (no pun intended), so I don't worry about it too much. And, yeah, I have the telltale bags under my eyes. Once in awhile I wake up and my lids are slightly swollen....all classic signs, but to what, I"m not sure.
oh, right, and when the cat goes to the vet and I have to cuddle the poor guy up close while he's stressing out, I get the classic allergy symptoms - extremely itchy red eyes and runny nose. That lasts a few hours. It never happens at home!!
I'm convinced I"m wired funny! heehee
But, since, I am my own warranty, Tomorrow I will ride to work again and plan for my big ride on Wednesday with the gang and will decide that cutting ginger out will make me well. (along with adequate rest, great food, regular exercise, etc.) :)
I'll keep you posted. One week at least.
Namaste,

so what all are you allergic to, Corsair?
CorsairMac
05-31-2005, 09:02 AM
My brother tells me to just tell people life and it makes it so much simpler! :D
Cinnamon, peppers, diary - all dairy, strawberries, all tree fruits cept apples (crossing my fingers on that one), soy, almost all nuts, chocolate, corn, garlic, all seafood including most fresh fish, yeast, *cigh* that's all I can remember right now. I also don't process sugars right so no potatoes, oats, sugars, bee honey, and I have to be careful with grains and legumes. and that's just the food allergies/sensativities! :o Anymore, when I get sick - the first thing I look at is what I ate which is why it takes me longer to go to the doctor and find out I may actually be really sick!! LOL
good luck on the ginger, let us know how it works out.
Corsair.....OMG! I should have asked what you *can* eat!! Good thing you have cycling for enjoyment!!

Hi, everyone!
I'm familiar with homeopathics (I worked for a homeopathic pharmaceutical company for 5+ years), and this sounds like something prescribed by a naturapath, not a homepath. Most homeopathic remedies end in a number and a letter, for example Usnea 10X or 6C and need to be taken when your mouth is "clean" as the remedies are extremely dilute and can easily be counteracted. If your not seeing results (though usnea is indicated for headaches in the Materia Medica), make sure you ingest nothing but water for 20 minutes before or after your dosage. It can be very time consuming to find the exact (and they are very specific) homeopathic remedy for what ails you, but when you do it's AMAZINGLY effective.
Thanks for the info, Deanna!
I called her a homeopathic practitioner. In fairness, I don't know what she calls herself. During the consultation she spoke a lot about homeopathy, however the diagnosis was based on my answers to her questions and a look at my irises..and the usnea is clearly labeled as a herbal dietary supplement.
I've had one full day ginger-free and last night I already felt more like me!! :) Now, if I can manage a couple of days without cheese, too......hmmmmm
The rain here is wicked, so tonight it's kickboxing, not riding. It's still something... which is better than nothing!!
Wish me luck and thank you!

funny - you've been on my mind today! Good to hear you feel better after a day without ginger....as for the cheese - I have a friend who is allergic to dairy. Everytime she eats it she gets a little tickle cough. Now she Knows she's not supposed to eat dairy, but she's decided in her world that a tickle cough is worth her having cream in her coffe or cheese with her food. I guess it's just a matter of what you're willing to tolerate in order to have something you want.
Aw, so nice to know you're thinking of little ole' me!! :)
The day has been good! Funny how what would have been a slightly better than average energy day for me 5 months ago is now a fantastic day! I feel great! :p
I can't believe that I still have some energy left! yahoo!
Kickboxing was great. I need to eat earlier, though...some of those pushups were HARD! heehee
I've struggled since I got home trying to think of what to eat without cheese....I'm microwaving a potato and boiling eggs and I'll have some mushrooms and peppers on the side. that should do me! :D
Day 2 without ginger and the folks at work have noticed a difference. Apparently, I didn't look as grey today. yay!
And, yeah, I agree. If you know just what the allergy is, and all that it does, you may be able to tolerate it sometimes in moderation, in order to enjoy your favourite things. It's all about joy, right?
I feel so lucky to be part of this forum! you gals are amazing!

Tofu would be great if you can locate it, easy to digest and a low rate of allergy problems
Its pretty tasteless on its own, but mix it up with the food you can tolerate, and it makes a filling source of protein
I have made both yummy desserts and tasty savoury dishes with it - its very versatile

Who you talking to Corsair?
Me confused...
Hi, ladies!
thank you, thank you, thank you!
today was great! last night was a road ride - I even posted my km's on bikejournal....and I'll post tonight's mountain bike ride, too!
health-wise...day 3 ginger-free went very well. my friend went to see the same the "naturopath" for a treatment and they talked about me some. my friend told her how I'd stopped on the ginger tea and that I think I may be allergic. when the lady heard it burns, she thought....maybe I'm forming an ulcer. not to leave any stone unturned, I looked it up. I had no idea that fatigue is a symptom of peptic ulcer. Or that most ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection. Or that the most useful over the counter anything to take for it is DGL which is an extract of licorice root. :D I've been drinking licorice tea as the antidote for my other allergy for years!!
with that in mind, I read what ulcer patients should do and followed along a little bit....
I made sure I did not eat later than 3:30 before my 6:30 ride. I drank licorice tea with my last meal....(my tummy was starting to feel "acidic")...I have now eaten potato and cheese and some veggies. I think the licorice tea will be helpful. tomorrow I look for DGL.
my stomach was not bothersome on the ride at all. and I was talking a mile a minute, so I'd say I have pretty good energy. I feel great now - just want to get my mountain bike fit as well as my road bike!!
and, yes, I can get tofu here, but do they make cheese flavoured tofu? I mean, cheese is good for protein, and for melting (tofu doesn't melt, does it?), but it's the flavour I love!! Do they make a tofu cheese substitute that is even remotely close for cooking or something? that would be so cool!!
hahaha!
I'm so happy now! yay! thank you for your awesome support!!

Ah... I thought you must do some racing cause you said you had dropped out of two... did you mean mountain bike events?
I have only been in fun rides as far as organised events go. Its a lot of fun, and the most recent one was a real rush cause I was aiming to do a resonable time.
I'm currently aiming for a place in the 50km event near the end of the year but that may be ambitious. There are also some local time trials I want to do well in around the same time. I love going fast on the road - its best when I am hitting near the speed limit in town - car drivers look surprised!

yeah, it could be considered that. I'm not that worried about that stuff, and my friend asked me if it was okay to talk about it, first....
In fairness, the "naturopath" suggested I call her, which I"m actually not going to do. I have another touch for health treatment scheduled with her, but the cranial sacral treatment I just had was soooooooooo much better, that I am thinking of cancelling that. On the other hand the "naturopath" also does colonics....I'm thinking I might try that. Have any of you had that done before? I don't know what to expect, but I think it might be good for me....
the word my massage / cranial sacral therapist used for my digestion was "sluggish". From my perspective that seems pretty accurate. A colonic might be just the ticket, no? Hey, what the heck, Madonna swears by them!

Sry if I confused us over misunderstanding somehow...
To come in placed for my category I will have to average at least 34km per hour... at the moment I do an average of somewhere between 28 and 30km per hour over a distance of 30km. So have to keep lifting the pace a little...

LBTC, one thing I found out I have troubles with - maybe/maybe not allergic to - is flour! For several years after I ate I would feel really bloated, I was either taking immodium, gas-x or some type of laxative (after the immodium  ) When I went on Atkins ALL that went away after a couple of weeks! I felt better than I had in years, I have since added wheat flour back and occasionally white- but not much, and I don't have the problem anymore. Atkins says that the yeast in breads can give you a yeast infection in your stomach (I believe that was where), I haven't read that part of the book in a while, but I am quite sure that the bread is what did it to me, I since am having problems after eating meats, not bad, but enough to notice, but dang if I am giving up my meats. :p
And that euphoric feeling you get could be the MSG! I can't handle that it makes me feel really funny and my jaws hurt
How is it going w/o ginger?
Hey, trigurl. :) Thanks for the ideas. Actually, my diet is pretty low in flour, especially white flour. I haven't eaten white bread in I-don't-know-how-long, my famous banana bread is very low in unbleached flour, has more whole wheat flour in it, I very rarely eat bread, the wraps I buy use sprouted wheat, etc, etc, if I have a problem with flour, it probably would not be showing! heehee.
Without ginger is going very well! Aside from the usual work issues bringing me down a bit, I haven't felt this good in ages!! I admit, though, that I haven't done a serious training ride yet...that will really be telling, I'm sure!
Interesting idea about the MSG. However, Chinese food never makes me feel euphoric. Only Thai. And I've eaten packaged and canned soups that had MSG, and never had that euphoric feeling. heehee. I kind of like, it, so I hope it's not the MSG! :D
As for your difficulty with digestion, maybe take a look at the symptoms of peptic ulcer. I was quite surprised. I've also integrated chewable DGL (extract of licorice root) and am very impressed with my digestive abilities!!! I've only used the stuff sporadically (I haven't remembered at every meal) since Saturday and I'm amazed at how much difference it has made!! Licorice is very calming for the digestive system, so it doesn't surprise me me much that it works, just that it works so well!! Maybe it would be a good thing for you to try, so you can continue to enjoy your meat!! :)
Thanks again for the tips and the concern,
Namaste,

I will ahve to look at DGL, I love licorice!
wow, thank you Road Raven! So far, everyone I talk to says the same thing "I've never heard of that" and a few others comment on the irony of it! hahahaha
another's experience would be interesting to hear about! thank you!
btw, still feeling grand! horrible day at work, poor food, not well timed. the "ulcer" (if that's what it was) is not bothering me, even without regularly taking the DGL. The DGL does seem helpful, but it almost seemed like I just needed it for a couple of days. I'll probably take it before a few more meals before I try a day without it, too.
Hey, I *am* tired, but I still have better energy than I have in a long time! yahoo!!

LBTC...My cousins little boy and my boss both have celiac...my boss (like Corsair) seems to be allergic to everything (rice, potatoes, soy, garlic, onions....) She & my cousin have severe reactions to gluten and you would not believe how many products it is in...carmel and even carmel coloring!!! Like yellow says...it does take alot of patience but recognition of food allergies seems to be getting better...we have several restaurants in our area that will make gluten free meals (italian ones for that matter)!!! My boss even makes her own "un-cheese" cause she doesn't digest lactose very well...

and they both subscribe to a food-allergy type magazine...

I have a kind of colitis where the villi in the gut are compromised and don't work the way they are supposed to. This can make me really tired periodically and I just have to crash for a while.
One of the likely causes please note, is ibuprophen and other NSAIDS that can cause this to happen, so, everyone, be judicious in you use of I. I am allergic to so many things--soy, wheat, other grains, eggs--and actually have a dr. visit today to probably go to drugs. I am disappointed, as I have been hoping to deal with it with alternative treatments, which help for a while, but ultimately don't seem to heal the underlyingproblem.

Is 'go the distance' Is this a road bike movie ?
No... sorry... not a bike movie at all - its actually a baseball movie (and it is surprising that it is one of my all time fave movies as baseball barely rates here as a "popular" sport)
"If you build it he will come"
"Ease his pain"
"Go the distance"
Hire the movie 'Field of Dreams' if you haven't seen it already... its a great little movie

Celiac disease is genetic, so one (or both) of the parents of your cousins (bouncybounce) will have the gene for it.Its an autoimmune disease, and about 1 in 200 have it (but dont know yet)
Thankfully it is managed with diet (avoidance of all gluten).
Its a pain in the ar-- to have ,
trying eat enough carbs and carry g/f food in your jersey, and coffee stops are just that (no cakes ,period!)
l hope LBTC doesn't have it, but there are worse things though :(

oroight...you are right about the pain in the @$$ but there are amazing new products and recipes out there specifically for g/f diets. Also, as I mentioned, restaurants seem to be getting friendlier to those with food allergies. Do you have celiac? I have numerous sources if you want (I used to go to Whole Foods for my boss and became VERY familiar with g/f foods)
BTW...my cousins kid just turned 4 and let me tell you!!!! The cake she made...MMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!! :D Tasted like the real thing!!!
I think it was on the fathers side...she is pregnant again...so far so good with the diabetes and celiac with the fetus!
