I enjoy riding my bike but I really enjoy it when my dad and I get to ride together. We live 6 hours apart so we don't get to ride together alot. But we have done some nice rides together since I got a bike last summer and really have a good time. Honestly, I've always kept a distance between me and my dad. I don't know why. But over the past year since we started riding together (he was doing it a few yrs before I started) we have gotten closer. It's been very nice for our relationship.

Anyway, long story short (lol), we found out on Friday that there's something wrong with my dad's heart. He went in for a physical to get cleared so he could have arthroscopic surgery on his knee and that's when they found it. So they're scheduling an echocardiogram early next week. The doctor says the walls of his heart are too thick, but we won't know more until after the test.

So any positive vibes or prayers (whichever you practice) would be appreciated. I know he's 67 in numbers but he's only about 32 inside. lol! He's very active and this is so unexpected. I'm trying very hard not to worry until after we know something. But it would help me to know others might be sending some positive thoughts his way, too. Thank you. BTW, his name is Frank.

Hi sweetie

I got all tearful just reading the beginning of your thread and it is so good to know how you and your Dad get on now.

Phew, the last part of what you wrote was a bit of a surprise, so am sending lots of BIG hugs and super duper karma your way and an extremely large flutterby thingy!

Hey, perhaps for a while if you Dad cannot go on his bike rides with you, you can lend him your Blackburn RX-8 TrakStand?

Gingerale, I'll keep you and your Dad in my prayers.
Riding with your Dad sounds like a wonderful way to connect. I wish I'd had the chance to ride with my Dad.

Let your dad know that there are plenty of people that continue riding after having cardiac conditions treated. Just make sure his cardiologist knows he is an active person and he wants to continue to be so. They are so used to seeing couch potatoes, sometimes they don't know what to do with patients who actually lead the lifestyle they recommend.
Good luck!

Gingerale, I'm going to pray for good results. I'm glad that you and your father are bonding again. I'm hoping for all the best for you both.:)
I lost my dad to a heart attack young and wish I would've had the time to bond as adults... it's such an important and special relationship; father and daughter.

Sending good thoughts your dad's way. Hope everything turns out well.
Several years ago my dad, who'd never been sick that I can ever recall, was diagnosed with a heart problem. He wasn't feeling sick then either. It came up during a routine work physical. He ended up having surgery and now he's just as active as ever.

Even Chloe is concentrating very hard that all goes well.

Thank you all so much. I just found out his test is on Tuesday. He still doesn't know that I know what it's for, exactly. He's being all nonchalant..."Oh, it's nothing. Just have to get a test done to get cleared for this arthroscopic surgery." Men. I just told them to call me when they go and let me know what they say.

So now it's the waiting game. Your understanding, prayers, and support are really appreciated.

Oh I hate when they baby us as adults. My dad did that when he was sick with cancer, he still wanted to protect his baby girl. Hang in there, maybe it really is just to clear him for surgery and you are being too worried. ;)

Thank you, everyone, for all of the positive vibes and prayers! The test was done today and we already have the results. The doctor said that they want to continue to watch it but that at this point they don't feel it's anything to be concerned over!!!!!!!! :D I'm so happy for him! So now he's going to get his knee surgery in the next week or so and be good to go ride Bike Tour Colorado again in June and then ragbrai in July. And we're going to be able to get more hours in together riding, too!! Double bonus!

Thank you, again!!!!

Great news!! Does this mean spring in Fredericksburg is on hold? Looks like we aren't getting any rain and the flowers will be minimal anyway. :(

Knowing my dad, we'll still be going to Fredericksburg. He's a stubborn old coot!

Just sifting through recent threads I had posted on because I seem to forget so easily.

Anyway, you have made me so happy reading your post today.

You two just make sure you have a lovely time together, it really makes a lovely story. Once again, I am sat here all bleary eyed! :D It would be great to see any pics of the pair of you together.

Gingerale: That is such wonderful news. I hope that he heals quickly from the arthroscopy, and you two have some wonderful rides together this summer. Treasure those moments! Wish I could have had more.

See.. now I'm smiling trying to picture my dad on a bike :D That is a good one!

Glad I could give you a good grin, Jes! LOL

Okay, I'm not crazy about this picture. But it's me, my dad, and my kids at the Mississippi River after finishing up RAGBRAI last summer in Iowa.

Man your dad is lean, men make me sick like that! Is he still doing well? When is the knee surgery?

gingerale
01-21-2009, 10:19 AM
He is. He's been riding about 4 yrs now and has dropped about 30 lbs. His surgery is scheduled for the 28th but he was going to call today and see if they can do it sooner. He's the type that it's taken us a year to get him to even consider this and now that he has his mind set on it, then having to wait until next week is too long.

I don't know how I missed this. That's GREAT news!!!! I'm so happy for all of you! Now for the knee surgery... he'll do great. As active as he is- it'll be no problem for him to come back from that.
I love the picture of you both with the kids. I think it's a GREAT picture. :)
