Anyone use chamois butter? How? What kind? And why?
Just curious...I never really ride over 40 miles at a time and never thought to try it...

yep I use it for any ride over 50 miles... keeps chafing away which makes for a far more comfortable ride!

I use it for any ride over about 20-24 miles. Chamois Butt'r for me! Doesn't prevent the occasional saddle sore, but does help with chafing/rawness.

Funny - I've never used it for any length ride (up to and including centuries), and I haven't had any chafing problems.

I've never used it... neither in my young day racing (70's) or now in my 2nd childhood :D
Mentally I can't get past the "squoosh" factor when you first pull up your drawers. I blame that on exceptional potty training :D
Physically, I wear shorts with the smallest chamois I can find, currently PI Sugar Shorts and ride a saddle (Koobi SI Classic) that NEVER gives me pain issues.

Yeah, I know the name isn't all that great. It was intended for dairy farmers to use on their cows' udders when they got chapped and raw (worse and worse, I know). However, the dairy farmers and large animal vets found the stuff was great on their hands. It seems to be pure lanolin so very little goes a long way. I use it when I'm going to be in the saddle all day and it's hot - that combo is deadly for me. And there is much less a "sqoosh" factor than with other chamois creams.

Having raised dairy goats for 12 years in my former life, I know first hand how wonderful Bag Balm works. On goat udders, hands, heels and anything chapped. Since reading here about saddle sores I have been using Bag Balm after I ride and think it has help. Never having used anything in/on/or around my chamois, if I try Bag Balm on my upcoming 50 mile ride, am I going to have problem with where the Bag Balm may end up? It does have antiseptic stuff and I think a little menthol. Does that irritate ones girlie parts? Having gotten a little careless with Gold Bond Power applications, having that stuff on ones privates is an interesting sensation. So far so good with the Bag Balm, but I have been carefully applying, not slathering it on. Any first hand Bag Balm users out there? bikerHen

I put a big gob in the crease where buttock meets thigh, and smear a little up to the crease where groin meets thigh. The stuff is sticky and doesn't "migrate"! It's pretty much gone by the end of the ride, like it absorbs or something. Instead of rough chafed skin I've got a smooth bootie, and no saddle sores!
