Ok...who told me that it 'rarely' if ever snows in Portland and even if it does, it melts almost immediately? Hmmmm?

I haven't seen the ground in over a week. I had to WADE through snow up to my knees to get to the chicken coop this morning and then shovel out the water container...which hangs above the ground by a foot! WTH?

Biking? Not bloody likely! I can't even drive, for pete's sake.

And my husband, the southerner? Yeah...he's about ready to leave me for convincing him that he'd love the PNW. :p

Who else is digging out from under the drifts (and ice)?

It's the same here on the valley floor in Newberg. We stuck a ruler in the snow on our deck yesterday afternoon and this morning we couldn't see any sign of it! I had to carry my poor pug out to the nearest tree so she could potty. The snow was up to mid-chest on her and she could barely walk! Hubby cleaned off the car last night and put the chains on in preparation for going to work this morning, but he didn't get very far down the road before he decided to turn around.

I don't think I've ever seen this much snow in my life!

that's part of why i got rid of my chickens. They hate this weather!

we're pretty snowed in too. we have about 9" solid snow/ice standing everywhere right now. much more fell but it compacted. more is supposed to be coming. many of our plans were canceled. DH & I have been having a blast walking to the store (3 mile round trip) and watching people driving cars who really shouldn't be on the road.

we bought our kids a sled when they were still rugrats and they never got to use it. We pulled it out and lent it to our neighbor kids so at least THEY could use it, it's the first sleddable snow i've seen here in 20 years!

Oh yeah, and we are using both the snow boots and snow shovel we bought when we moved to NC (from FL). Neither of them ever got used in 3 years of NC winters...but they get used here. Go figure! :p

We ventured out to the grocery store yesterday by car (8 miles). I've never used chains before but I'm sure glad I had them. It started snowing like mad when we were there and getting home was definitley precarious!

Ellen - we are just north of you...also in the valley. I never expected snow totals like this!!

(disclaimer - I'm loving this. Just loving it. It reminds me of Maine and Wisconsin and I really loved living in both places!)

This is the view out my back door right now:

It's beautiful! Here in the southeast it's cold (in the 20s at mid-afternoon) and sunny. It's supposed to warm up to the 50s by Christmas. No snow forecast.

How do the goats like it? Don't lose those white chickens in the snow!

I'm probably one of those who said that. :)

There is over a foot of snow in the driveway so we ain't goin' anywhere either (even if we had snow tires we just could not get out). All I have to shovel is... a broom and dust pan. Works okay for the stairs, not so great for the whole driveway. There is no where to push the snow anyway.

It's just so beautiful out there.

The great news is that I badly needed a haircut and now I can have one because everyone else has canceled their appointment. :)

The goats were tolerating it well enough until the crust of ice formed on the top (now that crust is sandwiched under more fresh snow!)...but I think the crust hurts their legs. I know it hurts mine! Even the dogs no longer like playing in it unless we break a path for them.

The worst part about the snow is that the white chickens looks so dirty in comparison! :p

All the pictures posted in this thread looks like my neighborhood! I got 12 inches of the white stuff here. :(

Trying to remain positive; at least we are over the "hump" . . . the shortest day has come and gone and the sun will be making it's return to the northern hemisphere.

Question . . . anyone doing a big event this summer? I signed up to do the Native Planet Bike Classic on June 20th. 128 miles from Winthrop to Ross Lake and back on the north cascade highway. I will begin training this spring. Anyone local who would like to join me on my "long rides" on Saturdays let me know. Company is always nice. :)

In the mean time I have been going to spin classes 3-4 times a week. Hope this will keep me some sort of decent shape to get me through this winter.

We have about 2 1/2 feet on the ground from last week's storm; and it is coming down again. Started about 2 hours ago and there are probably about 2 more inches, at least on the ground again. I'm watching out my window at work! What a Winter Wonderland!

Ahh, the question where does all the snow go? In A GREAT BIG PILE! and, it keeps getting deeper and deeper until you can't hardly throw the snow up there anymore!

My back is already killing me from last week! Can't wait to get out there and shovel some more.

I'll probably have at least 1/2 a foot to get off the driveway before I drive in.

FUN in the GREAT OUTDOORS We'll see what it is like tomorrow. We are supposed to get snow all week; but alas, I'm heading down to Tucson on Wednesday so no white christmas for me. That is, I'm heading to Tucson if I can drive out of here!

It's puking at Flagstaff? My son who goes NAU will be overjoyed to have to dig his car out ( a subaru no less) when he gets back after the holiday.

The snowblower we bought this fall was supposed to insure a dry season the year we can't ski!!

Here's a few pictures I snapped as we took a walk around the park across from our neighborhood. Frankie the Pug had fun!

Jess & Frankie (http://www.footeco.com/ellen/snow/jaquith09.jpg) (& hubby in the orange cap...at least we won't have to worry about someone hunting him!)

Those photos are so great - thanks for posting them.

Hot and humid here - storms this morning so I didn't go for a morning ride, and then it heated up so quickly, it was too hot for me to go this afternoon.

You could send just a box or two of your snow this way if you have too much :D

Now don't hurt me, but the arid west did need this snow pack....

I'll send you some sea level rise if I could too.

This morning it's nearly 50 degrees. It's melting like mad. Our street is just plain nasty with the slush and gravel. Bye-bye, Snow!!!!

We got the day off from snowing yesterday as well as warmer tempetures too. Made a huge mess! However, we got over 10 inches of new snow this morning. That brings our total to over 4' of snow in the last two weeks. We spent christmas eve day and christmas day shoveling off the roof of the house, garage and my sewing studio. Another storm is expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon. It looks like we may have to go another round on the roofs. What a way to bring in the new year. :( bikerHen

Yikes I hope you get a break from the snow. Its hard to think of you all in such cold conditions when we are expecting another day around 105 degrees. We could do with a little of your cold down this way. :D
