but not quite. I realized one of the brake cables is way too long (it was obstructing the headlight, what was he thinking?)

It still needs two small finishing touches-
these half-clips (http://www.velo-orange.com/mkshalfclip.html)
and
this water bottle cage (http://www.velo-orange.com/voretrocage.html)

The background is the second photo is rather busy (ya think?) but i am so happy with the finished product i had to post.

New handlebars, stem, hub, wider tires, generator light system, pleather grips, and bar end shifters.
I reckon I should have a bell too :)

Your Mariposa looks great, Zen. That porter rack will definitely be a nice addition to her.

Wow Zen, beautiful job.

Can you post one more photo of the handlebars and brakes configuration. It's hard to tell what's going on there in the photo. It looks quite intriguing.

It looks great.

Apparently it has a barbie namesister:

Sweet! Nice job.

Pardon my ignorance though... is the shifter lever on the seat tube to engage/disengage the generator? Or what? Do they come that way, or is it something the previous owner rigged up?

What ignorance? You nailed it.
It has a bottom bracket generator that is engaged/disengaged with that lever. Sadly though, the generator is kaput.

Pardes, I'll get some better photos of the bars when I get her home.

How functional are the brake levers going to be, stuck out to the side like that? It looks cool, but it seems like you'll have to cock your wrist at an unnatural angle to grab ahold.

Not very :p
they're being moved.

I think Brian may have done that because that's the way his are.
I keep telling him he's a hipsterdoofus.

Might be kinda nifty to cross your arms every time you want to apply the brakes! Cross-hand braking could become the next big thing and you'd be famous.

Seriously, nice bike!

I have a new favorite word!
But really, the bike looks pretty great. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Zen, lovely bike!

As for the brakes whatever fits you best. Check out what my LBS did on similar bars, think it's pictured on post #7 here.

They are below the bar and ever so slightly turned in. It's incredibly comfortable, seems to just fit right in the hand. I have teeny tiny mousey paws so anything else would be tough.

Trek, while that option seems like it would work it just doesn't seem right. I'll see how this feels then decide how to tweak.

While it does not seem right, it feels right. For me it's as if my fingers just fall right on the brakes. The trick seems to be that the brakes are ever so slightly tweaked inward, not just below the bars.

If you don't feel perfect, try it  And again, nice bike!!

Could we have a new word/phrase to supplant: "Ooooooh Saaaaadnesssss"???;)

Zen...bummed I didn't get to see it ... in the flesh, so to speak, a BD's on Sunday.

I was thinking about that in conjunction with our Sunday brunch :p

Nothing can take it's place.
