My favorite comment so far..."Ribcages are so last-century. The new craze is to have your heart thump against your breast implants"

Why did they take away her leg muscle

Yeah, I prefer my legs to have muscles, too.

I can't remember the last time I've looked at a fashion magazine, but stuff like that sure makes me glad I don't pick them up.

Ridiculous and insulting.

It's no wonder we have body image issues! Doesn't help that the "fashion shows" are on anorexic scarecrows of models - with all due appologies to naturally thin women, but those runway models need to sit down to a nice pasta dinner followed by a big bowl of Ben & Jerry's :D. Nightly. Of course this is to fuel a nice 20 mile bike ride.

Let me just point out that while there certainly is some Photoshop touching up in the second photo (yes it certainly looks like they skimmed a bit off the belt area...)- its actually an entirely different shot with entirely different lighting.... the first one looks like a test shot - the lighting is much more soft, her legs and head in are slightly different positions and she hasn't even been styled (her shorts are all rucked up, hair isn't wet or blowing in the breeze) Some of what you are seeing was done with safety pins and strobe lights...

I'll second what Eden said. It is an entirely different shot. Easiest to note by the eyes and that the camera itself is at an alternate angle. Undoubtedly photoshopped though.

I prefer the first shot myself, but alas fashion mags will be what they have always been. An illusion of perfection.

My legs aren't twigs,my waistline doesn't resemble an hour glass and my boobs are somewhere in there though not easy to find. Despite that, my current body-shape suits the active lifestyle I live and that encourages me more than vanity.

While I thought the same thing, Eden, on the other hand, I have no idea what to think about any picture being "real" or not after seeing this a couple years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U. Not arguing that they are or aren't different shots... it just gives me pause.

there are limits to what Photoshop can achieve without it looking pretty obvious (just as airbrushing used to look pretty obvious when taken too far in the days before computers...) It does mean that makeup artists, stylists and photographers can afford to be a bit more sloppy these days... you can fix it later...., but most of the tricks they use these days have been done before. It just took more effort.

I won't argue that it gives a sense of beauty that is basically not achievable.... if even the women who are already deemed to be the most beautiful in the world end up getting digitally enhanced.... I would be much more interesting to see a comparison of the actual original shot to see what was really changed. With the lighting difference and that they really smoothed out and pinned back her shorts its a little harder to tell. (you want faked, that might be some of the worst of it... those shorts are so pinned back that she probably can't move from that position.... that's why clothes on store manikins look so good too and so often don't look nearly as nice when tried on.... safety pin tailoring....)

Dang. I like Campari. :o

I agree it's not the same shot though. Things like the eyes, the expression of the mouth, the folds in the shorts, yeah they COULD change it all (read a Photoshop User magazine sometime), but at some point it's less work for the photographer to just shoot the dang thing over again.

There's a lot of "photoshopping" in the pictures, but I agree that they're 2 different photos. Even the background is different... along with the lighting, etc. that people have pointed out.

Eden

the background is probably dropped in.... that you can do with relative ease... the hardest part is getting it all behind the hair without making it look fake. The photos really are too low res to take a good look.

Maybe with a huge amount of work you could smooth out the shorts as much as has been done, but it would be a big job to do it without making it look really unnatural...

The lighting could never be changed so drastically.

Smoothing out those shorts is easy, like taking wrinkles out of a face.
Highlights can be added giving the effect of different lighting.
I'm not great at Photoshop but I know some and I'm pretty sure it's the same shot.

I'm a professional photographer

As am I.
We'll just have to disagree

Eden
12-09-2008, 04:25 PM
Sorry, but its not a matter of agreeing or not. You can disagree all you want, but that won't make it the same. It is a different photograph.
Her head is at a different angle
Her knee is overlapping her leg differently
Her hair is blowing around
Her gaze is more forward
Her arm is lower
The lighting is entirely different - trust me not photoshop effect made can do that....
if I look more I could probably go on...

I won't disagree that the final product was altered, but the second one did not start out as the first.

I'm just a lowly illustrator with delusions of grandeur. :(

But... my mother was a professional photographer!- does that count?

Back to the orginal intent of this post... whether or not this is the same photo or not, it doesn't matter. We know for a fact that the second photo was touched up in some degree.

I do this kind of restoration for a living and I can tell you that it would be a lot easier just to take another shoot then try to mask out the hair. I'm not saying it's impossible... just easier.

And depending on the angle the picture was taken, you can do some crazy things with your body. Anyone who has ever seen "American's next top model" would know what I mean when the judges critique the photos. I admit, I stand in front of the mirror just to see what angle would make me look thinner too.

Anyway, most of us, if not all must have come across the Dove commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hibyAJOSW8U) where they transformed a regular "jane doe" into a supermodel. I really like what Dove is trying to achieve with this. I wish more commericals and ads would be like this.

I believe Kate Winslet and some other actors have in fact went against their images being drastically altered. If anything, didn't the Vanity Fair or one of the bigger fashion magazine actually did an issue about this subjuect?

So. I have a friend who was a Dove girl herself. times square billboard etc. she is beautiful and full figured, but has had plastic surgery. So real is real, but not really real.

Obviously we have WAY too much time on our hands.... This is my first winter on TE. Do things get even buggier in February when biking is even more difficult?

Just wait until cabin fever really sets in!!!

Some folks take up skiiing or snowshoeing to get out. And some of us in the southern belt will get back out there to work off the holiday calories. But we get saved by those in the southern hemisphere who are in the full throws of SUMMER to bring us back to reality.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Timmy has gone out with his faithful dog Lassie to round up the missing cow and her new calf....

and I'm not a professional photographer either, although I have published photographs in government documents. Does that count?

Just wait. Winters on TE are a kooky mix of just about everything, and very few daily ride reports. It tends to get more and more 'philosophical' towards the end of winter. Also more arguments because everyone is going stir crazy and getting light-deprived. :D

Then in the Spring all the newbies come out in droves with all the same questions again (not saying this is BAD, just saying that it happens every Spring, and yes it would be cool if more of them could the search function)....what's the 'best' kind of bike to get? (while giving no information at all on themselves or how they intend to ride)....what's the 'best' saddle for comfort?.....what are the 'best' shorts?....(and all these 'bests' have to also be inexpensive of course)....what size bike do I need?.....how fast will I lose weight?....why do pedestrians jump into my path while I'm riding on the sidewalk and say "ON YOUR LEFT!"?....boyfriends buying or building bikes for their girlfriends without any input from the actual rider-to-be at all, like they know 'what's best' for her....clipless fall threads galore....the multiple "I can't believe that car pulled right in front of me, didn't he see me?!!" threads.....loser immature guys pretending to be girls and asking questions about bodily functions, girly parts and dirty/holey/chafing shorts....
...it's always fun . :p

Haha... that's awesome! I'm one of those nuts that cycle in the winter. My manager calls me a "soak rat" in an endearing way :D And my boyfriend have heart attacks when I tell him that it's okay to bike when there's a light snow on the ground...

I'm sure I'll be posting something like I fell on black ice today or something like that come Feb.

Ahhhh yes.....I came to TE in July and asked billions of questions which were ALL politely and THOROUGHLY answered by all of you dear people!!!!!!

Yup, I keep meaning to take photos of my daily commuting rides when something interesting pops up but.....it's wet and cold and now where is my camera...which pannier is in it....oh never mind.....

It so rarely snows out here (maybe a more in Vancouver?... they are a bit more north than we are, but they are still costal) That year round cycling isn't as outrageous as it seems. Heck, I probably do more of my longer rides in the middle of winter as training actually slows down during the racing season, but this time of the year I have at least one 3 hour ride per week on the schedule.

Snow? I learned my lesson last year... The day it snowed (yeah one day....) I took the bus to work and a 25 min bike ride turned into a two hour bus ride... If it snows again this year dinky (my cross bike) is coming out and I'm riding in....

I hear ya! Yep, it rarely snows here neither. But the problem with Vancouver is motorists freak our when there's a dust of snow on the ground. They somehow forget how to drive. I guess the fact that it's wet snow and ice that doesn't help neither. It's not like the East where it's dry and fluffy. Plus the City doesn't clear out the side lanes or bike route. And I have to go over a bridge that's kinda crazy already. I don't know if studded tries will save me from motorist.

But do studded tires work on wet snow? Or just ice? It's tempting but if it only snow once and I have to spend over $100 on tires. Argh.. I don't know. :(
