I rode for 2 hours this afternoon. I drank 2 full bottles on the ride, a red bull and a 1/2 a liter of water when I got home. And still I lost 2 pounds! Yes, I know it's water weight and will return shortly. It's just amazing to me how much you can sweat. Not too much climbing on today's ride only 1360 feet, so I was cruising and didn't get the sweat in the eyes thing that I get going up Diablo, so it surprised me. I do like that at least our heat is dry. My heart rate monitor said it was 94. It always registers a little high. But I never felt like I was overheating. Evaporation! Gotta love it!

I wouldn't miss the pounds if they chose to stay wherever they went. :D

Here in Texas... we are having a heat wave!

It has been above 90 the past week.

I ran outside on Friday in 93 degree weather... what a butt kicker that was!

Then I rode on Saturday in 93ish degree weather... 15 miles was enough for me!

Now I understand the reasoning for getting up at 6 AM to ride !!!!

Where are you in Texas? I have a sister in New Braunfils. I know Texas is huge. Kind of like California. When we first moved out here and lived near San Diego there was an earthquake near San Francisco and everyone was calling us from maine to see if we had felt it.

We seem to have had good luck dodging the quakes. :)

Is this where I can whimper and whine about how I hate heat and humidity?

I know that we really don't have heat and humidity like some do, but I'm a hot weather wimp. I always feel sticky and sweat and gross from about now to October. Bleh.

Give me 40 degrees and a blustery (tail)wind and I'm happy. No wind and heat and humidity in the high 80's are just yuck.

(Going off to pout for the summer, now.)

If you really want 40 degrees and a blustery wind - come visit us in the northeast. I'll even provide a place to stay. Of course you also have to put up with the wet, and the nor'easter that is bearing down on us. Yesterday I heard a weather forecaster say that all but 2 days in May have been below normal temperatures for the Boston area. Yuck!

Right now I'd be happy to take some of V's Hot! Hot! Hot!

Interesting to read about all the different weather we have to deal with. I guess it's not perfect anywhere........... darn!
We've had a cold, wet, and windy spring here in Iowa. I am ready and more than ready for the hot, humid days of summer. I know its weird - most people do not enjoy the heat, but I always have. I HATE being cold. I don't like wearing layers and layers of clothes. Let me go out the door in a sport top and bike shorts, get in a good sweaty ride, drink lots of fluids, and I am in heaven! I endure the cold weather, I don't let it keep me inside, but I live for summer! And it's getting closer and closer....... Wheeeeeeeeeee! :D

Thanks, Denise. Actually, if I had unlimited funds and no responsibilities at home, I'd take you up on the offer. I'm not liking the heat I'm starting to get in the middle of the country.

Come to think of it, though, I already have ridden in the greater Boston area (visiting relatives who lived in Jamaica Plain) and lived to tell about it. I don't think I'll push my luck and try it again.

It is blistering hot here in Austin (about 50 miles from New Braunfels). I went out to take a touristy ride to a State Park here in the 90 plus heat. As long as I was moving, I was fine, but I just about passed out every time I had to stop at a light. I have thick, mountain girl blood, not quite ready for the oven temps. Gonna have to start riding at 6:15 am

It is hot here in Louisiana too, I think Texas heat wave has moved here!!! As they say here in LA, its not the heat that is so bad it is the humidity!!! Yeah right. I want to live in a place where 90 is the hottest in summer and it gets down in low to mid 40's in winter. Anybody know of a place like that?

Another one here from the northeast ladies!!! and hating it. I also am a warm weather person, hate to be cold. I cannot wait to ride without a jacket.

Denise I was thinking of you the other day as I remember a post from you, but do not know if it is recent. You mentioned not riding at the potential that you expected to for this time of year. Maybe it is not you physically but this horrible spring weather is what is keeping you down. I know it has me very fustrated and trying to figure out a scientific reason for this change in weather pattern.

After this past weekend, I came to the conclusion that I guess I better start searching rain jackets. I know there are many posts on them here.

JoAnn -
I feel like I've been complaining about that a lot, and I still haven't figured out whether it is still related to my recovery from my crash (http://denise2004crash.crazyguyonabike.com) (which was a year ago last Friday!) or whether it is due to our really lousy weather not letting me get the miles in on my bike. Funny thing though, I looked at my mileage summary as of the end of last week, and it completely matched my mileage by the same date late year. Hmmm... Whatever it is, the only way I know of to fix this is to spend more time (and more miles too) on my bike! I was hoping to get 3 good riding days in over the Memorial Day weekend, but the weather forecast still doesn't look great. But if it's really just scattered showers (instead of the all out rain we're having now)... well, I'm still hoping for some relatively decent riding days.

The weather wizard apparently isn't listening to any of us. Maybe it's time to move!

Another Texan here to whine about this hot weather. It is like a humid oven here in west Texas and I'm used to dry heat. We rode Sunday and although the temp said 93 I'm betting the heat index was well over a 100. It was a punishing 27.8 miles. Not to mention the wind that completed that seared steak feeling.

I thought I had more time to ride midday. Looks like I'll be up really early to get a ride in from now on.

Which brings to question: what temperature do you draw the line at and say 'no way'! AND what sunscreen works best? I tried BullFrog Sunday. It was a spray. I think I'll go back to the BullFrog gel, that way I know I'll get all exposed skin.

BullFrog 36 SPF + Mosquitoe spray + Road Grit = Shake and Bake Kik! :(

Veronica

I use Bullfrog spray only when there is no one around to get my back and shoulders for me. And that's the only place I use it. Coppertone 45 oil free is my preferred. But it's a cream and I can't get my back and shoulders really well. It has kept me burn free and doesn't seem to cause any breakouts.

Thanks for the sunscreen advice. Going for 7 days straight in the sun isn't going to be much fun (no rhyme intended here :p )! Being the fair one here I need all the advice I can get!

Just ordered Spwipes on the internet for inbetween rest stops- they're like Wipes except they have sunscreen in them. Come in packets so easy to stuff in pockets, etc. Used them last year, but I didn't do this much riding either!

Annie's secret method for applying sunscreen to back and shoulders (if you're like me and not flexible enough to reach)

Find a nice, smooth long-handled wooden kitchen spoon. Apply a small amount of sunscreen to back of spoon. Looking in mirror, apply to all areas of back that you can't reach, adding more sunscreen as needed. I've done this for years. It works! Just remember NOT to put the spoon back in the kitchen utensil drawer. The sunscreen doesn't wash out so well after repeated applications.

I want to live in a place where 90 is the hottest in summer and it gets down in low to mid 40's in winter. Anybody know of a place like that?

welllllllllllllllllll that would be Albuquerque, New Mexico! as a rule the temps are in the high 90s from about June thru early Sept with the humidity in the lower teens. During monsoon, the humidity will climb during the afternoon right before our daily rainstorm lasting between 15-30 mins and only hitting parts of the city. Soon as the rain passes, the humidity drops back down and on we go! In the winter, as a rule - the temps are in the mid 40 to lower 50s. Now, like any city, we've got days in the summer where temps can go over 100 and days in the winter where they drop below freezing but that isn't the norm. And all my whining aside, this year was the most snow I've ever seen here in 6 yrs and it lasted all of 3 days.
As for heat - doesn't bother me. I'm with whomever said they'd rather have the heat than the cold. I did a 54 mile ride last Sun and left at 3 pm coz that was the only time I had to get the ride in. Everyone thought I was nuts but it didn't bother me. Like V - I just drank Lots and drank lots when I got home and I rode again the next day.

Get yourself some zinc oxide. It saved my hide when I rode CAR 7. I know, it's ugly, it's white, but it works. You are going to have the sun pounding on your right side, it can literally cook you! Put it on your ears, your shoulders (if you go sleevless), your cheeks. Wear it like war paint, wear it proudly!

I know it has me very fustrated and trying to figure out a scientific reason for this change in weather pattern.

You know, earthquakes are quite an interest to me. I've heard that some scientist somewhere calculated after the 9.0 Indonesia quake in December that this earthquake's upthrust was SO violent, more violent than any of the other 9-pointers in the last century (including the two Alaskan ones that also produced deadly tsunamis), that it actually shifted the earth on its axis very very slightly, like millimeters, or even less. I heard that this has happened before in the earth's history, but it was before recorded history. This was very small change, but it makes you wonder if it was "large enough" to cause a slight alteration in weather patterns around the globe.

Food for thought!

I worked the first aid booth at a crit over in Fort Worth on Sunday - the thermometer on the sign above the high school stadium read 108 degrees - now that CAN'T have been right, but I did hear 101 and 102 from some other folks. It FELT like 108 out there on that pavement!

New Braunfels is about 3.5 hours south of the Dallas area. I LOVE New Braunfels - we'll be passing through there Friday on the way to San Antonio to visit the 'rents.

It's only going to get hotter here in Texas...think I will be doing a lot of indoor spinning this summer!

OH! For sunscreen - SOL KinderSport for kids is GREAT - no PABA, very dense white stuff, doesn't come off with the sweat, and you sweat right through it - unlike some other sunscreens that make you feel like you are coated in grease or something. I was out in the sun for 12 hours 2 weeks ago, I get a big ugly rash even with a few minutes of sun exposure AND I'm allergic to PABA - this stuff worked great with only 1 app in the morning, and another light coat in the afternoon. I tanned a little through it, but no burn and no rash.

And congrats on your graduation kk!!!!

Hi guys-- well... it's hot here in San Antonio, too. Went out on a short (15 mi) ride with a coworker and his daughter last weekend. The poor thing overheated, so we sat in the shade while her dad rode the last 5 miles back to their truck. She was all crying and apologizing for 'ruining the ride'! I told her that she definitely did not ruin the ride, that it's not her fault it's hot, lol. I hope she doesn't give up! We all signed up to do bike to the beach this fall. Early morning or late evening is a definite. We left @ 9am and by 1030 we were just dripping!

fixedgeargirl-- where are some nice places to ride in austin? I only have a road bike so far, so nothing too rough... I went up there the other weekend to hit 6th street with some friends, it was great!

I've been trying the DeSoto Sports 'arm coolers'. White, thin, wicking material , like arm-warmers, be made to protect against the sun. So far, so good. They don't seem thick enough to work, but so far I haven't gotten a burn or even color through them. I like them because they roll up small enough to fit into my seatpost bag, so I can wait until the sun is overhead to wear them.

Ok I am a Georgia girl born and raised and we had mid 80 temps last week which were avg. for our area. However last night I went on a ride with some friends and I was quite chilly when we got back around 8:30. We are suppose to have temps in the low to upper 70's during the day and low to upper 50's at night which is totally wrong for this time of year. So anyway very odd that I am not hot like the rest of you.

After my haircut today I was getting in the car when I saw a black car in front of me with a largish dog panting in the back. It's hot today in sunny CA, we all knew this was going to be a scorcher. This car was in full sun although shaded parking was only 10-15 yards away. :(

Instead of going to my next errand I waited 15 - 18 minutes to see if the owner came back or if the dog was in distress. I know this may be over the top of me. The windows were open for a cross breeze but folks, it was hot OUTSIDE, I could not stand in the sun.

In a car it can reach temps that will kill your fur-kid in oh maybe 10 minutes.

A meter maid came by and I flagged her down. I said maybe I'm making too much of this but explained the hot pup. As luck would have it I got the dog loving meter maid :) She walked over to check the dog. As she approached the driver finally appeared.

I did not stay to oversee but from the body language and pointing I think it went something like:

:o But I was only gone a few minutes
 There was someone here concerned enough about your dog to wait for almost 20. Your dog was already here when she arrived
:o The dog's ok, look the windows are ...
 Yes, appears to be ok. You are lucky  it only takes 10 minutes for it not to be ok.

Folks, it's summer. Your dog wants to be with you and run with you but if you can't guarantee your fur-kid will be cool leave your best friend at home.

MP, thanks for the b-day wishes! :) I did OK -- I've never climbed Sierra or the back side of Mt. Hamilton. It was hard, especially with the heat. Whew. OTOH, it made the Calaveras Wall (my former Nemesis Hill) seem like an anthill. I felt bad about taking the SAG back from Sunol, but I just couldn't get rid of the dizziness. Guess I was cooked. I didn't see you until I came back to the Sunol rest stop to rescue dachshund and Laurie. Glad you were able to finish the ride. You guys are amazing!!

Coach Theresa and Vernon were great -- I didn't have the social graces to respond to all their encouragement, but I really appreciated it.

Seeing the Bobs and Snap at the top of Sierra was awesome. They run the best rest stop ever -- valet parking for bikes, warnings about glass, picture taking, waiting on riders hand and foot. I was so beat that I didn't notice their decorations (TnT-colored leis, umbrellas, etc.) until I saw Jo & Snap's pics.

The woman at the Sunol rest stop was awesome too. At that point, I was back to barely speaking, so I never was able to tell her how much I appreciated her help and kindness.

How's Mike doing? He reached deep into his Suitcase of Courage to get to the top of Sierra. I hope his cough hasn't turned into a debilitating lung disease.

Absolutely -- the back of your neck (and your ears) is a good candidate for sunscreen. The back of your neck is also a great place to apply a nice Amici Veloci buff filled with ice when you need to cool off. ;)

Crud, we didn't realize you guys were hanging out in Sunol - Snap & LeeBob and I had dinner at Boscos. We looked over and didn't see Ken's truck anymore so we figured everyone had cleared out. (And to be honest, I was kind of tired out myself so my curiousity wasn't in particularly high gear)

Agreed - that Sierra stop was an oasis of happiness. I just wish I'd been more coherent and appreciative. I've never climbed Sierra in the daylight and did not know you could see Hamilton from the top - THAT was cool!

You did 99% of that ride so don't worry about a little SAG. I am so impressed with how everyone did. It was pretty amazing. 20 - 30 degrees cooler would have been an entirely different ride. That reflective heat off the pavement on Sierra was easily 110. Crazy.

Mike has never ever quit a ride. He should have stopped on Sierra (heck he should not have started). Silly stubborn men.

Not exactly - at least not from what's on that Accuweather site, of less than 1.5 cm a day.

This (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/data/obhistory/KDAB.html) is our idea of pouring rain. 27 cm in the past 30 hours or so.

The weather you're having is more like the winter in the central US, where we don't see the sun for weeks on end. I do sympathize! But it's not pouring rain. ;)

Happy birthday Mel! :D

Also - re, sunblock and heat, anybody got some good paraben-free lip sunblock that'll ride in a jersey pocket without melting? Liquid's okay for the sunblock that goes on nose, neck and arms, but my lips get burned even on a long run and liquid is definitely not OK for lip sunblock. :p
