Hey gals -
I'm thinking of going Record on my new Look 585 and was wondering if anybody knew what my crankset options are. I'm wanting to go compact but maybe something more like FSA....I know Bontrager is compatible but I've heard that there can be FD issues w/ that brand.

Anybody have any suggestions? I'm getting the Record used from a friend and don't want to blow like $600+ on a new fancy carbon campy crankset.

You just need a campy compact front derailleur with the Bontrager crankset. I've used that, and it worked fine with the correct ft der.

I'm going to be using a SRAM SRM crank with the campy-equipped bike I'm getting at the end of the month. From what I've read, I shouldn't have any issues.

I run all-Campy, except for an '09 50/34 SRAM Red crankset (167.5) and a ceramic BB. Shifts like buttah. The entire crankset and BB cost less than $600.

(This might be heresy, but I think it's smoother than my other bike, which has a full-Record 10 setup)

P.S. If your FD is an '08 or later, it has been standardized to work with both doubles and compacts. I've had no issues running it with the latter.

Yeah the ladies agree! Ok so I can use an Sram crankset. Thats great news!

BlueTree I'm confused. See I thought that after 08 they've started making FDs in CT and then normal sizes. I thought it was pre-o8 that had no designation....oh my this is what happens when a DuraAce bike becomes a Record bike and its owner is in totally new territory....There were some TE postings from a few years ago that I tried to research this FD CT issue on but all the links were broken because they were so old.

BTW, Bluetree, do you like the ceramic BB??

If it's 08, you shouldn't have to worry about the front der. (You will have to check the cage of the rear der, tho.) That said, my BF ran the same '07 CT FD with both standard and compact had no problems, regardless of what the literature said. Go figure. If I were you, I'd go with what I have. If it works, great. If it doesn't work, upgrade.
Just make sure to go with a Record chain/cassette and the SRAM rings will be humming perfectly in sync.

As for the ceramic BB, there is a noticeable difference in smoothness and IMHO worth the extra coin. Like bibs... after people take the plunge and try it, 90% of them will never go without again ;)

Bluetree you're awesome :)

Thanks for being so so helpful!! As a bonus the SRAM crankset will be compatible if I move to DA in the future?

.. move to DA in the future?

Now why would anyone do that?!

My words exactly. You already have the best groupset with record....
