We do a newsletter each year for friends and family. This year's took a little longer than normal to compose. :D

The Year in Verse

The leaves are turning brown, and there’s rain in the sky.
That means another year has quickly gone by.

As the years travel on and seasons go gray,
So the old little cat gently did pass away.

She was happy and healthy, right to her last day,
And that’s what we hope for at the end of our stay.

But empty houses are sad.
They are never quite right.
So two kittens came home,
One big and one slight.

Now kittens are funny, those little furry friends.
They do silly things, and have pep to no end.

They eat things they shouldn’t. They hide under the bed.
And right around midnight, they pounce on your head.

They beat each other up, and they chase all around.
They can hardly wait to bring the Christmas tree down.

Tucker is the big one.
He is black, with some white.
He won’t fit in a lap,
Though he thinks that he might.

The other is Cassie, a wee cat to be sure.
With her whiskers and spots, any blues she can cure.

The kitties moved in and without too much fuss.
We really do like them and they seem to like us.

The girl said to herself, “I know biking is fun,
But I need a new goal, so maybe I’ll run.”

“I can run. I can bike, and I swim pretty quick.
Racing a triathlon would be a good trick.”

So the girl picked a race, one that’s hard and that’s long.
And she trained quite a lot, ‘cause you have to be strong.

Swim for a mile, and bike 54
Then run for 13, and a little bit more.

The girl worked hard, and she trained to run fast,
While that did not happen, she did not come in last.

It was hot when she ran, when she ran in her race.
But she stuck with her plan and she got a 3rd place!

Just to finish the day was the goal in her mind,
So 3rd in her age group was simply divine.

No time for vacations. Just swim, bike and run.
But the boy and girl still always have fun.

The boy got a new job, Hip hurrah and hooray!
It’s a long way to work, but he goes every day.

He rides his motorbike, then he gets on a train
He rides in the heat and he rides in the rain.

He goes to the City, in the big shiny train.
By the time that he gets there, he heads home again.

The commute is no fun, podcasts help pass the time,
But the job is a good one and they’re hard to find.

But work is just work, don’t you ever forget.
Too much time on your work and you’ll live with regret.

Life’s an adventure and surely you’ll find,
That the best rewards come when you try to be kind.

The year has been swell and we’re full of good cheer.
We miss everyone, both the far and the near.

So dear family and friends, we wish you the best.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and all the rest.

That made me tear up. Any story with kittens in it gets me these days.

Thanks! We had fun writing it. We were stuck on the ending and watched "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" thinking we might "borrow" a line or two. We both sat there drumming out the meter.

And just 'cause I can...
