What's the difference aside from Candy's being twice the price of Smarty's ?
All I know is that Smarty's can't be rebuilt but it's not like I would be riding them that hard.

On the site where I would be buying these from (http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/15724-240_CRBSP6-3-Parts-65-Pedals/Mountain/Crank-Brothers-Smarty-Pedals.htm) there is a question I don't understand at all:

Question:
Do the Crank Brothers Smarty Pedals come with interchangeable colored rails?

Answer:
No, the Crank Brothers Smarty Pedals do not come with interchangeable colored rails.

Question:
How hard is it to change the rails on the Crank Brothers Smarty Pedals?

Answer:
It is very easy to change the rails on the Crank Brothers Smarty Pedals. You only need a small flat bladed screwdriver and a few minutes to change both rails on each pedal.

What are "rails" and is this functional or merely cosmetic?

My Crank Brothers 50/50 pedals have rails. You can change them out to change the color or replace broken ones. I spent a bit of time on a mtb forum of mostly young boys ranting about how the 50/50 pedals kept falling apart and losing screws. A few level-headed reviewers claimed that might happen if you beat them on rocks all the time but not otherwise. I find them to be very sturdy pedals that grip my shoes very well and are great for flat pedaling.

I have Smarty on my commuter or Candy on my mountain bike. Not sure if it is real or perceived but I find the Smarty easier to disengage. Otherwise I find them to be exactly the same. DH bent a Smarty spindle, not sure if it is not as strong but it seems a little lighter weight than my Candy spindle.

Rails are pop on plastic colored things. Just for looks and customizing your smarty pedals.

How silly.
Price Point must have bought up a bunch of old stock because they were selling two kinds of Smarty's, one with interchangable rails, the other not.

Guess which one was twice the price?
Guess which ones I bought for $30 ?:)?:)
