A friend sent me this link, and I couldn't stop watching it (with jaw dropping). According to the comments, this path in Spain has been closed due to people falling to their deaths on it, and you can certainly see why if you watch it. Not for the faint of heart but kinda wild to see!

Would you hike it? Not me!

Yeahbut (I didn't explain very well), the folks who are on it in the video found their way on it even though it is closed and obviously very dangerous!

Zen -- where is that spot on the C&O? East of Great Falls, there is a blind corner. I'm always worried I'll end up in the drink.

This is between Fort Frederick and Williamsport. I like to call it the Redneck Riviera.

I'm hoping to ride out that far sometime next year.

Are you getting snow tonight? I saw that WV and Cumberland are under a snow advisory.

I have a phobia of falling. Heights per se don't bother me, but if an elevation feels unprotected I go into full-blown panic even if it's only a few feet. (Climbing antenna tower = fine. Getting off tower onto roof = can't do it. Open spiral staircase in lighthouse = cling to wall, don't turn eyes left or right, crab-walk all the way up, fight back tears, coming down is even worse. Outside 200' up on the catwalk around the light = fine.)

SO... I'm not even going to watch that video. :p:rolleyes: Your comments are scary enough for me. :o

That walk is enough for a panic attack for me. Glad that guy walked along, doesn't look too enjoyable or relaxing which is what I like in a hike.

Gah! No way in fricking h#ll would I ever go near that thing! (Even though the view is spectacular.) And the dude in the video is doing it so casually: Oh, the ancient, broken concrete path has fallen away? No problem, I'll just use the 3-inch-wide rusty steel beam to get across. Nevermind that 500-foot plummet to certain death if I lose my concentration for a split second.

Oy!

Oy!

Yeah...he (and the others he encountered along the way) seemed to put a lot of faith in that crumbling walkway. No way would I put my weight on that bar - even if I weren't completely freaked out by the 100+ foot drop beneath it! At least some of those others seemed to be clipping in to that wire along the wall (I assume that was some sort of safety line?).

That's what's called a Via Ferrata. Well, I think so. I didn't watch the vid but I think I've seen it before.

Anyway, Via Ferratas are common out in the Dolomites (is that where this was taken?) and it means 'Iron Way'. It is basically a system of steel rungs and cables bolted into the rock that you clip into. There is usually a lot of traversing that goes on, which can be quite scary, and there is definitelely skill required for some of the ones out that way, but overall Via Ferratas can be really safe. You wear a climbing harness and have essentially two lengths of webbing attached to your harness. At all points in time you have at least one of those attached to the cables. Usually the webbing/slings have some sort of shock absorption built in so if you fall you don't bust through the static material.

There is a good one at Nelson Rock Preserve in West Virginia that I've done a few times, but not sure if it's still running.

Note, upon watching this I don't think the guy carrying the camera is clipped in, he's moving much too fast and passes others without problem. He's probably just an experienced hiker/climber who is comfortable moving in small exposed areas. You'd be surprised how you (well, how some people do!) get used to walking on small ledges 100s of feet up in the air. I wouldn't be terribly comfortable on those exposed pipes and some of the scarier sections, but the rest doesn't look too bad (if I were clipped in!!)

Yika-a-mundi!

And yeah, he looks so casual passing people on a foot wide path, tiptoeing across the metal bar. I'd be hysterical...

When I run, I occasionally kick my other leg..stumble a bit...all I kept thinking during the video is "one small mis-step..."

It's actually closed...but that doesn't stop daredevils from figuring out ways to access it. So no maintenance is implied or intended.
