Shiba puppies!!!

My old Shiba gal is nearly 16 years old... that cam brings back memories of her as a pup. :)

They are all sleeping in the back of the crate in one big pile. It looks like there are six of them. Is that right? Wow, they are cute!

Oops, make that the front of the crate. Ooh, one's moving!

Bluetree -- I'm not at all familiar with the breed. What are they like? The pups are just too cute. I'm not getting anything done (well, okay, I blogged about them instead of the stuff I'm supposed to blog about!) and instead of watching the shows I watch on Monday night, I paused my TiVo because the human was playing with the pups...

They are like miniature Akitas, about 15-25 lbs depending on show quality. Because they are one of the 14 ancient breeds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_dog_breeds) they can be very strongwilled and must be socialized heavily when young. Otherwise, they tend to have territorial or dominance issues with other dogs, and can rarely be off-leash, lest their wild natures take over whenever they see anything that resembles prey. They also adhere to a very strict "pack hierarchy" when it comes to dealing with their humans. They are not impossible to train, but they are fairly high on the difficulty scale.

One thing I have noticed about them is that are so persnickety clean. I've had two Shibas and neither of them required any housebreaking at all. They absolutely will not foul up anywhere they consider "home" and avoid stepping in puddles, mud, or anything that will get them dirty. They constantly preen and clean their paws like cats. This clean nature, of course, totally goes out the window if they see small game, cats, birds, etc... then they go into hunter mode and you can see the wolfishness in them.

They are very brave in defending their home. I've seen my 20-lb. female Shiba go directly after a 70-lb. German Shepherd that jumped our fence. She's chased off a prowler one night, too. She also has scars on her muzzle from encounters with wild rats and raccoons. Absolutely fearless in that regard, almost to the point of stupid.

They have a two-layered coat which is great for cold weather, and no-so-great during shedding season. Health problems are rare, although we got our Shibas from carefully bred stock in Japan. Most of the Americanized version has been bred after their inclusion into the AKC, which means that traits may have been bred into them for looks, as opposed to function.

I've read some reports that because of their size, they can be made into apartment dogs. I heartily disagree. This breed is very athletic and loves to run!

No yelling boo!, but if you go here:

You can look at a number of video clips, some of which show them playing. Not to mention clips of them when they were even tinier, and of them nursing (beware of cuteness-induced catatonia)

OMG, they are darling! They are all "fighting", licking and nipping each other, and squeaking at the moment. We just got a puppy this spring, so this sure does bring back memories. Every now and then one will cry as if it's really in pain, but I know that's the way litters learn limits. It's a bit distressing to listen too, though.

I expect they'll all be snoozing in a minute or two. ;)

Oh, and I should add that only people who are trainable should have these dogs. Yup... people who are trainable.

That is because it is a rare Shiba that listens to anyone, whether it's to come when called, go outside, come inside, etc. They only do things if they feel like it, so that's one of the reasons why it is never good to have a Shiba off-leash.

They are very adept at training their humans, however. If my female decides she wants something, she will find you sit in front of you and stare at you. If you do not get up within 10 seconds to follow her, she'll let out a big catlike "Yowl" of protest. Then she'll stop, stare, and wait another 10 seconds and yowl until you do her bidding. See? Very trainable.

As for the yowling noise, I've only been around one other dog that sounds like that - the Siberian Husky. It's a weird sound.

Last night I went to bed, read a little, turned over to go to sleep, and after the house got quiet, I heard what could only be a bird, probably brought in by the cat, downstairs in the kitchen! Oy, I was so disgusted and sleepy, I angrily marched down the stairs, hoping the bird was not bleeding on the carpet.

When I got to the kitchen, I saw the culprit all right...I had left my laptop on the kitchen table, and forgot that the sleeping puppies were still there in one of the tabs. They had awakened and waked me up with their yipping and whining!

It's gone black on my computer too, but a couple of evenings ago, their human "dad" brought in a cat and told the puppies to be good or he would take her out. He gave various instructions about not biting her tail, etc., and held the cat on his lap while the puppies investigated. Finally, the cat jumped out of his lap and wandered around the enclosure, seemingly oblivious to the puppies even though they were all over her - very tolerant cat who is obviously used to puppies. She was a black cat who looked just like my cat, Missy. Now my kitties (and their "mom") want a puppy!!

I have read that the "Ustream" service that the Puppycam is on is going to send a puppycam with Ustream service into the homes with each puppy, as they have had great publicity with this.) I am going to miss the Puppycam. I watch them every day and night. I hope we get another week or two of puppies. Tokie

The dreaded warning... this coming weekend (Dec 6-7th) will be when the first couple of pups will be heading off to their new homes. Yes, it has been and will continue to be really hard for us to let each pup go but we're confident that they are going to extremely loving and caring homes.

We'll be arranging at keast a yearly meet-up (if not more) with the pups that will be going to homes in California. We'll have to post a link to where everyone can go to get updates, progress and pictures on the litter as they grow.

Well, I thought the new owners would have their puppies at home tonight, but the human is playing with them - all 6. They seem quite well housebroken! and starting to try to get out of their "puppy pen". So cute! I wake up every morning in a (both rescue pets) poodle dogpile. Sammie sleeps near our feet - he's beagle sized. And Lucy - the size of a whippet (or our "sub-standard" poodle!) sneaks up at about 3 am when we are too asleep to notice, so we wake up a bit crowded at 5 am! It's funny when you see the pups have both a foam bed and the wire crate, and they choose the crate 6 pup dogpile. And I love the new work "puppalicious" Tuckerville! They are! Tokie

I'm so excited puppy cam is back! They are all napping now. All except one are all lying next to each other. The other one is off in it's own corner... I wanna snuggle up

aaaaawwwwww..... they're sleeping and they look like little bugs! little fat larvae with tiny black legs :D

One of them just got pushed over onto his back and just slept on, with all four tiny stubs skywards.

this is another puppycam. These are Italian Greyhounds. The breeder put it up to watch them since their momma is sick.

They are younger, so not quite as much fun to watch.

-note - mama is much better and occasionally allowed to see her pups, but she isn't supposed to do more than "top up" nursing so isn't there much. When she is, this is a blast to watch as babies and mama are so happy to see each other.
this is an adult photo of mama - so you see what these chubby little puppies are going to grow into.
