As some of you know, I was working on a portrait of my favorite raptor, Isis, for an upcoming art show this week. I finished her just in the nick of time since the show is Tuesday. I took pics as I painted so you can see the work in progress and the finished piece. I worked in acrylics which is a new direction for me as I am an oil painter normally. “Isis” is the subject of my avatar pic and a favorite of mine at the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary - a local bird rehab and hospital. She has been a permanent resident there since 1990 - she came there malnourished and is blind in one eye, therefore unreleasable. She is a beautiful redtail hawk. I took a few photos of her one day when a volunteer had her out of her enclosure. One of her favorite things is to be taken out along the Gulf of Mexico beach behind the sanctuary. Anyway, I wanted to share this as I know that some of you had requested to see my painting when done. Enjoy!
Wow! Just - beautiful! :)
Beautiful! You are one talented individual!

Thanks for the nice comments everyone! Isis is already getting lots of good comments at the show. A couple of ladies teared up when they read her story. She is a wonderful bird - I visit her as often as I can - the sanctuary is one of my favorite places - especially in winter. There are always other birds hanging out there looking for free handouts - great blue herons, night herons, egrets, wild pelicans and newly released ones from the sanctuary, etc. I typed up Isis’s story and put in a flyer for the sanctuary, so hopefully some folks at the show will go there. They are always in need of volunteers - that is where I recently attended the wild bird rescue class too.

Beautiful portrait! You are very talented!
I used to go to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary when I was growing up in St. Pete. They do a great job there!

Wonderful, wildhawk! Are you more of an animal painter? Or what are your preferred subjects?

You have captured the essence of her beautifully.
Her name has roots in Egyptian mythology. Who named her? Very cool name ...would be a fantastic name for a bike..(my bike has no name...)

Beautiful work. How'd the art show go? Is it juried? Will you win a prize for this one?
How close are you to the Gulf?
