Does anyone else have a problem with being able to sleep in on a Saturday??
I don't normally sleep in during the week. I'm up at 415am or so on M & Thurs for swim practice & 5am T/W (F?) to bike in to the city. If i'm training for an event, Saturdays are again 5am days. Sundays can be early days if it's going to be hot & we need to do dirt time early.
I have never been able to get over feeling bad about sleeping in. I feel half the day is over by 8am..
Are you like this & what do you do to not feel funny about it?
I've never been a "good" sleeper so not sleeping in is pretty normal for me. I'm up at 5am each day and on the weekends it's nice to sleep until 6:00 or so if I can. I don't feel bad about it at all...if I manage another hour or two of sleep I'm tickled pink!

Have to say I do tend to feel the same. But unlike you, I have to get up at 4:30 am during the week, to get to work..cycling is only a small part of my long commute.
So weekends I do allow myself to sleep in..an acceptable sleep-in is 7:00-7:30 am ...which right now I've gone overtime! :D
But in the past few months, I realize I've been sleep-deprived and I don't realize this until I do allow myself to sleep in abit longer...and feel more refreshed because I allowed myself to sleep abit more.
But yea, in warmer seasons, I get there on the bike earlier on weekends. Shopping is also more enjoyable during earlier part of morning which is how I plan my ride on Sat. after 2 hrs. of riding or so.

Thank goodness for daylight saving time tomorrow. I ususally get up around 6 am so waking at 8 am is sleeping in. And man! that extra 2 hours of sleep do make a difference... though in the middle of the day I still get tired and need to either go for a refreshing walk around (outside work) or a cup of coffee.

I love sleeping. That said, it's more difficult--physically and mentally--if I sleep in on the weekends/holidays/vacation. Going back to work is bad enough. Having to get up early AND going to work would make me desolate. Therefore, I split the difference, get up at my usual time when I don't have to work, and take an afternoon nap if I feel like it.

I haven't been able to sleep in for years - I attribute that to kids... As infants they disrupted my "sleep til 11am/ingrained while a teenager" patterns
Then they started school and I started work... so up early to check emails and forums - like TE - makes lunches and drive them/me into town (we live 1/2 hour out in the country)
Now, with youngest aged 13, I have no need to get up and monitor at the weekedn, but I still wake early.
Sometimes this last winter, I slept til 8am - unheard of for years
In summer though its different. We have a huge number of birds around our place which is fantastic - but the compromise is having to put up with their noise. So in spring, the tui begins a day's break - very loud and pretty "bing-bong-bing" call from about 5:30-6:15. Its 6:15 now, and already I have burnt the rubbish, put in a load of washing and begun marking assessments (for my students). As pages load here (dial-up), I read and/or reply to posts.
Over Summer, the tui will have foregone its early announcement, but then we have the babies of numerous garden birds scrabbling around in their nests which their parents have kindly built in nooks and crannies around the eaves... sigh...
Ah well, this time of day is stunning and so many sleep through the glorious sun-rises, or misty ethereal mornings I witness.
CC - now, like you, if the day gets to 8-9, and I have done "nothing" I feel like so much of the day is gone and it feels more crammed to try and "fit" things in.
An early start actually makes my day feel relaxed and less hurried, and I usually get an hour (or more at weekends) to myself in the quiet, which I relish.
When I was getting up for work at 5:30 every day, I would sleep in until 7 on the weekends and it felt so luxurious! I loved it. But when my contract ended at the end of July, I got a chance to catch up on sleep and go back to my "natural" sleep habits of 9+ hours a night. So I go to bed at the same time (between 10 and 11) and now I don't wake up until 8. I'll be up at 7 at the earliest and that can be a struggle for me. I feel horrible when I sleep past 8 as it really does seem like a waste. To be honest, I like the guilt as it gets me motivated to get up and get on with my day. With daylight savings happening here tomorrow, I'll hopefully get back to getting up at 7am on a regular basis.

I feel bad about sleeping in on a Saturday - but I do tend to do it to try to catch up on sleep. I'm a night owl, usually go to bed at 2-3 am, and have to be up by 7 or 8 on weekdays... Friday nights, I'm usually up later. I think I went to bed at 5 or 6 am last night?
So I woke up at noon this "morning"...

If i have to get up at 415am, i'm normally in bed by 9pm. People think i'm crazy..
I hope it's sort of normal?

I'm very anal about sleeping in on weekends. Even when my dog was alive, I would take him out at 7am (when I wake up for work) and then go back to sleep for a couple more hours.
I feel so cheated if I have to wake up early or have to use an alarm on a weekend. I can't imagine having to wake up to go to the pool for 5am. I swim in the evenings which suits me much better (nice and exhausted for sleep!!)
There is nothing more relaxing to me than just lazing about on a Sunday morning with a hot mug of tea watching t.v. or doing the sudoku.

With three kids, a puppy and a husband that goes away to work I don't get the chance to sleep in very often. When a chance to sleep in comes along you can bet your bottom dollar I grab it. A sleep in for me is about 8am.
I keep telling myself I should go to bed earlier but I think I am a bit of a night owl and generally don't get to bed before about 11pm.
Do you think as you get older you just naturally get up earlier? All the oldies I know wake up at the crack of dawn even when they don't have a reason to.
When I use to swim before taking the kids to school (this was when my husband worked normal hours) the other swimmers were all retired. I would ask them why they would be at the pool at 5am if they did not have to be and most of them said that they could not sleep in anymore. Great I thought I don't get the chance to sleep in now and by the time I am an old retired woman I wont be able to.:D

I think maybe retired people can let their bodies sync up with the sun as we're built to do. It's SO much healthier, for the heart and psyche as doctors know right now, and for the rest of the body systems also I believe. It's one of the things that I feel really fortunate about not working. (It's really not all it's cracked up to be overall, especially for someone who struggles with self-worth and motivation anyhow.)
These days the only time my alarm wakes me is for the club rides :o:p In the summer I'm awake plenty early. Right now, after the time change, I'll have a couple of weeks reprieve. But since our bedroom window faces northwest, and there's a pretty long eave, I don't get as much morning light as I'd like, so I don't usually wake until just a few minutes before actual sunrise, especially this time of year when the sun's farther south.
I'm just trying to figure out why the club has to ride out at 8 a.m. when it's 38 degrees... when it's going to be 65 by the time we get back... and even a 10 a.m. start would let us dress appropriately for the whole ride without having to carry a pack for heavy layers...

I still get up early, despite the fact I have the luxury of being able to sleep in a little later. I got up at 5 AM for 30 years... I still get up by 5:30 most week days, although sometimes I sleep in until 6-6:30. Any later than that, it feels wrong.
On the weekends, I usually get up early, but let myself go back to sleep until 7-8. If I don't sleep, my husband and I usually watch the news in bed and sort of loll around until 8. Well, at this time of year. In the summer I tend to be out of bed at the crack of dawn.
I went to bed at 9-10 for years. I don't think it's weird. I do stay up later now, but there are nights when I get in bed at 8 and watch TV for awhile or read.
The older I get, the more I appreciate sleep!
The young fella who works for me does the "go to bed at 3am-get up at 11am" thing. It works well for us because he covers the later shift. We were talking about it and realized it's not that one of us sleeps more than the other...we just do it at different times of the day.

One of my best friends is Canadian, she can't sleep in for the most part. She's up by 8am (after a late night out) and already working on some paper of some sort for class.
I on the other hand, it depends upon the day. I used to not be able to sleep in. I used to feel horrible about it. I was on the rowing team in college, and so waking up at 5:30 am was sleeping in. Now that I am finishing up my last semester as a Resident Assistant (which requires me to be up until midnight everynight for different reasons), I can sleep in quite well. hehe.... let go of the guilt. doing it every weekend, i dont promote... but sometimes, a late sunday sleeping in (and if you have someone to share it with, it's quite nice) can be just what teh doctor orders.
relax..... block out the light in your room. body needs sleep almost more than it needs food.

I'm a total night owl and always have been. I have tried to adjust to an early-to-bed-early-to-rise schedule more than once, but I just wind up tired and cranky because my body never gets used to waking up early. I love sleeping late and do it whenever possible. If I have to get up before 10 on a weekend, that's early for me. I never feel guilty about sleeping late. It's not wasting the day if I feel refreshed and happy when I finally do roll out of bed.

I sleep in til about 7:30/ 8 on the weekends and it feels great. It may only be and extra hour or so from when I get up for work on the weekdays but to me it is heaven. I have no desire to sleep more than that- there is too much I want to do on the weekends! I am naturally a morning person and like getting things done early!
