View Full Version : Halloween Commute
I'm thinking about doing something special for Halloween as I ride to work.
I've been thinking about getting a witch's hat to strap on to my helmet somehow but I'm also unwilling to actually buy something that I'm not going to use again. (I don't plan to actually dress up for Halloween night.)
Suggestions for a funky, simple, on-the-cheap Halloween touch for my bike commute?

You said you don't want to buy anything...but how about duct tape? A roll of duct tape can be used to fashion all kinds of accessories. A small witches hat out of duct tape? Attached to your helmet with duct tape? Unfortunately, the colored duct tape comes in small rolls. An actual witches hat might be cheaper, on clearance at Walgreen's! But you could make a small one and get the message across. Also, I like that Mary had a "broom" sticking out of the back of her bike! You could make one of those out of newspaper.
But you could save the witches hat for next year, too!

I have this mental image of a bunch of bikes locked to the rack tomorrow (while the rider is at work), all with brooms - the handle starting somewhere along the top tube and the broom end sticking out the back from the fender - and the witch's hats perched on the saddle.

Everyone be careful out there! There are a lot of drunks on the road on Halloween - and even worse since it's a Friday. My husband was hit (he's fine now) about 4 years ago on his commute home on Halloween.
Be extra careful!

I dress up as a witch for my commute. I have a witch hat that I tie to my helmet. You have to lightly stuff it with newspaper to help hold its shape. I do the broom thing as well. I have never gotten as much attention on my bike than when I'm dressed up. People actually see me! My evening commute is during the start of trick or treat time so I'm home long before the drunks are coming home from the parties. I have to keep an eye out for the kiddies though. Although with all my lights they see me coming and stop and stare. Daughter is going to join me for tomorrows commute. We are going shopping tonight to see if we can find something to decorate my BOB trailer, on sale. I have few ideas. Pictures will be posted if we figure it all out. :D bikerHen
Thanks all for the ideas!
How exactly does one attach a broom to a bike? I'm all for it but I'm not sure how to do it.

My husband is all about zip ties, but duct tape would work too. Just don't tape the cables to the frame. Even a good strong twine would work. I attach my broom to the top tube in two or three places. Haven't lost it yet. bikerHen
Take one of those plastic jack-o-lanterns, put slits in the sides near the bottom, duct tape to rear rack.
A light inside would be great if you're riding at dawn or dusk.
