I'm looking for a cheap Shimano 10sp compatible rear wheel for use on the trainer primarily, but hopefully good enough as a spare race wheel.

Clincher. Aluminum braking surface. Preferably bombproof. Can be heavy. But at the same time, I'm looking for something a little lighter than the Shimano/Open Pro setups I see on Performance, because I don't need a million spokes. I'd love a Shimano hub, but noisier ones would do :p.

Hope to spend under $200, depending on the wheel. If I can get something similar to my current rear wheel but slightly nicer, then I'll just upgrade and use the current one as a trainer wheel. For reference, I have a 2006 WH-R560 (old Ultegra level), 20 spoke (radial, 2x).

If you want to unload your whole wheelset, I'll consider it. I could use another set of training wheels for the backup bike. Ideally, I just want to get a trainer wheel and then save up for race wheels, but I'm open to other options.

We have several set of R-540's hanging around in the basement.... They only have 16 spokes. My husband used to use them and never broke any spokes, but he did tend to get pinch flats with them, so he prefers his FSA's these days. He is tall and about 190 though, so a lighter rider would likely not get flats with them. (I rode a set of them for a season with no problems).

Are they the black wheels with the super bladed spokes? 16 on both front and rear? (I have 16/20). I think my BF has a set...but he won't let me use them now that he switched to 10sp, because I think they're his only 10sp compatible backup wheels now. You scared me a bit with the pinch flat thing---but you know, I kept getting pinch flats on my rear with one tire. I think the tire was just a dud, but I couldn't SEE a problem. I switched to wider rim tape and put on new tires and things have been better.

I'd consider them...at least the rear for a trainer wheel. Maybe the set for wheel pit wheels. What would you want for them?

Hmmm... I looked at some reviews and talked to the BF, and it seems that Shimano made some big improvements between the 540s and 560s on spoke attachment. Seems plenty of people breaking the 540 spokes. Hopefully that wouldn't be a problem for me at 125-130lbs, but I think I'd be less inclined to use them for training (lots of potholes around here) and more for just spares. My BF won't do long training rides on his. So, I'd be looking at not paying much at all for 540s.

Of course, I only got my front 16 spoke wheel untrue once, and that was due to an emergency stop where I couldn't get unclipped, and I wound up falling on the wheel. It wasn't even that out of true.

Technically they are the hubby's so I'll ask him if he wants to sell them and what he'd be interested in getting for them. I do think they are strong enough. He's over 6 foot and about 190 during the race season and he never had a problem with breaking spokes or the wheels going out of true - just the pinch flat thing....
