Thanks to Yellow I bought new shoes on Saturday.
I wore them on my three mile run this morning. This was third run that I've kept my miles under ten minutes each - 9:41, 9:59 and 9:57. :D
I've beginning to think it's not a fluke.
It's a nice run through my neighborhood - a one mile loop. I do it as many times as I feel like it and time allows. A lot of people have decorated for Halloween and their holiday lights were still on at 5 AM.

I am in the market for new shoes as well. I just hate switching, what did you get?
Landscaping tonight, shopping tomorrow, mountain biking Wednesday. Lord, I hope to get a run in this week!

I got a pair of New Balance. I'm not sure which ones. I'll look at home. We went to different store at the recommendation of someone at Thom's work.
I liked it. The lady right away noticed how much my ankles turn in. My ankles turn in so much when I walk normally that I had bunions by the time I was twenty. And I don't wear "bad for you" shoes - EVER. It's the first time anyone other than a podiatrist has commented on my ankles.

Woohoo I had a first run in 11 weeks (there was one sneaked in about 6 wks ago but only about 25 min) - it was soooo beautiful out - and running through the leaves is the best!
I'm heavily therapying myself with my new massage balls to keep those muscles soft and flexible (the thighs are a piece of work), wish me luck... half mary here I come...

Thanks to Yellow I bought new shoes on Saturday.
Glad I could be of help! :p
A friend and I had a fun little running adventure (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYBzQSX45_U) on Saturday. Well, we ran most of it.
(sorry it's so blurry...I had to compress the file size)

I had another nice semi-adventure run yesterday. I had been on part of the trail before but never completed the loop. This one was a little brushy, but not as bad as last week. Amazing views of a canyon on one side and the Great Salt Lake and surroundings on the other side. Amazing, amazing and beautiful day. Made me feel so grateful to be here on this planet and able to do what I do. I ran/hiked for a little over 3 hours, about 16 miles. No blood!
Attn New Balance junkies...onlineshoes.com is currently having a pretty good promotion on NB shoes. $15 off orders $75-$99 (code 15NB2008) and $20 of orders >$100 (20NB2008). Thru 11/30. I used to live by NB for road shoes. Haven't had as much luck with their trail shoes.

This week of running was rather disappointing after having a pretty good 1/2 race last weekend. Tuesday night speed workout went rather well, surprisingly enough. 1 mile warm-up, 4 x 1/2 mile at 5k pace with 1/4 mile rest intervals (fast walk) in between each set. I was finally able to keep my target pace for the entire length of each set! Yay! :p
Thursday night was a bust. I had a 90 minute massage on Wednesday night and did not have any soreness the next day. But, once I started running my muscles felt so sore like I had been lifting weights (with my legs and butt)! I was SUPPOSED to do 1 mile warmup and then 5 miles at about 40 seconds faster/mile than marathon pace. I barely made it 2-1/2 miles and had to jog/walk the rest. It really sucked.
Yesterday it poured buckets. We got over an inch-and-a-half yesterday and had high winds up to 23 mph to boot. Today was forecasted for more rain, so I told my husband I'd go to church with him and then run at the gym later. Turns out it didn't rain today. It was still windy though, with gusts up to 17 mph.
So, I went to the gym at noon, planning a 3 hour/20 miler on the treadmill. Why noon? Because that's when channel 3 would start airing the ING NYC Marathon. And then they'd air figure skating from 1-3pm. Perfect! I'm still working on my hydration/nutrition while running and really feel like that is my downfall. I got some suggestions from Steve Born at Hammer Nutrition (I LOVE Perpetuem for cycling 3-6 hours+ -- the other stuff like Accelerade, Gu2O, etc. really upsets my digestive system). He suggested I up my caloric intake to 150 per hour and my hydration to 12 oz. per hour. He suggested I use Hammer Gel or Heed mixed in water for the first two hours and Perpetuem mixed in water for the final hour. Also, 1 Endurolyte per hour if I didn't use the Heed.
Well, it turned out to be the WORST long run I've had so far. I brought with me my four 10 oz. Nathan bottles. One serving of Heed in each of two bottles (my LBS only had two one-serving packets left yesterday and expected a new shipment on Monday), and one serving of Perpetuem in each of the remaining two bottles. I figured this would come out close to the necessary 450 calories and 36 oz. of fluid for 3 hours. I timed it so that I would consume one bottle of Heed and 1/2 bottle of Perpetuem for each of the first two hours and the remaining bottle of Perpetuem for the last hour. I felt horribly nauseous (sp?) the whole time, burped a lot, and had to stop and walk a lot to keep from vomiting. Oh, and the fact that they were COOKING pancakes and eggs downstairs (in the GYM!!! What the heck???), didn't help the nausea. My fingers swellled a lot too, so that my wedding rings got very tight. When I got home I vomited several times -- just yellow water. I sweated a lot while running (at least in the first hour or so sweat was dripping off me), but I just didn't feel like I could drink any more while running. I probably should have weighed myself before and after, but didn't think of that. I've been home for about 3 hours and I've only peed a little bit once. So, I figure I am dehydrated. Whether from not consuming enough fluid while running, or from vomiting afterward I'm not sure. After about an hour I made myself eat and nursed a 20 oz. mug of peppermint tea. I plan to drink at least one more mug before bed. Oh, another thing: because I didn't go to the gym until noon, I did eat at around 8am (not suggested to eat any closer to 3 hours before a race or a long run and not more than 200-400 calories)-- 2 corn tortillas, 1 small piece of bread, and 1 whole omega-3 egg and 1 white. I didn't need to void at all while running and didn't vomit any of that up, so I do believe it was fully digested before I started.
The treadmill kept re-setting itself, so I don't know exactly, but I estimate I did pretty darn cloes to the 20 miles, give or take. It did take me about 3-1/2 hours though.
So, I guess next weekend I will try the Hammer Gel. I was hoping I could get all in one with the Heed (carbs/calories and electrolytes), but I really would have liked some plain water -- the Heed was way too sweet for me and I think that is what caused the nausea/burping. I used the Perpetuem in last week's race and didn't have that problem. I just didn't ingest enough calories or fluid and really felt myself slow and struggle in the last 2-3 miles. I eat very low sugar/low sodium on a daily basis, so I am very sensitive to sweet and salty tastes (I find I have to buy fresh chicken breasts as opposed to frozen as the frozen tastes way to salty too me!).
What do you think? I really feel like my hydration/nutrition is the one thing holding me back. This is all new to me as when I used to run shorter distances (8-10 miles) I wouldn't eat or drink anything while running. And, as I mentioned before, the Perpetuem works great for me while cycling for 3-6+ hours.
I am SO DISAPPOINTED. I'm just about a month out from the marathon and really need to get this figured out! I can't afford to have any more crappy training runs!
This coming week looks pretty tough even though my long run is cut down to 15 miles. Speedwork on Tuesday and then on Thursday, 10 miles at predicted marathon pace. I'll have to do my long run on Saturday morning as we are having relatives over that afternoon and overnight and they want to go to 9am church (I've been skipping church to run now that we don't have Saturday night services anymore).
Well, sorry for the LOOOOONNNNGGG saga here. I'm just really feeling frustrated. Thanks for putting up with me!
Yellow, Thanks for the heads up on the NB shoes. At first, I thought, yeah, but what about shipping costs? But then, I looked and see they have free shipping too! And a 90 day guarantee! I was just thinking I should probably get a new pair now so I can break them in before the race. :)
Veronica, Isn't it amazing what the right pair of shoes can do for you? I've had a problem with my knee caps pointing inward when my toes are facing straight ahead. Well, my new PT said she thought that insoles could correct that. Voila! A pair of Green superfeet in my New Balance running shoes and my knee caps no longer face inward! (Well, at least not while I'm wearing my shoes!). I can't believe it took me over 30 years to find such a simple solution (I remember having this problem as far back as elementary school). And, I do think it's helping with some of my muscular imbalances as well.
alpinerabbit, I use the Yamuna Body Rolling balls from time to time, and when I do they really help (www.yamunabodyrolling.com). I'm glad you're finding relief from your massage balls as well. :)
Aggie_Ama, Did you get a run in? Sounds like you've been busy!
Keep it up everyone! :D

Hey!
I just switched my shoes from a motion control nike to a neutral addidas. I am much happier with them. I am slowly moving back to running. Three saturday and 8 sunday. All on trails. I am trying to stay really positive and do everything I am supposed to do to keep my hip in line and loose!
I can say that Ice baths are NOT fun...
I am also getting nervous. Mine is 2 months out and I am trying to really get back into my training. I have decided to really focus on healing and running on soft surfaces only....doing all of my stretches, rolling on the foam roller things, seeing the chiropracter, and staying positive. I am also listening to what the professionals are telling me to do instead of running what I feel like or want to run. I will be back up to 10 on Sunday, and hopefully back on track soon. Staying positive and doing what I am supposed to do!

I use Gu2o now. I really like it, and it has lots of electrolytes.

Michelem, you ran 20 miles on the treadmill? That is scary and awesome all at once.
I'd say with the marathon, you WILL finish. It isn't that bad. There is a race day excitement and your body, esp if you can train at 14-15 miles, will be ok. As far as pace goes, it all depends on what you want. I had these silly time goals and then I got sick so my goals changed to just finishing. Finishing is good.
I'm building up my miles post-marathon. I think my next large type race isn't until May so there is no rush. I ran 5 miles that was an out-and-back hill climb on Sunday. I'm still sore. I mapped it as slightly over 1,000' elevation gain in the 2.5 mile return to the start so that's a good thing. I have a trail race next weekend and then a few little 5k's and whatever else I do in the near future.
Good shoes can definitely help. My favorites are somewhat atypical for distance runs but they work for me.
Am looking forward to being back to the training runs. I guess though I'm kind of irked that now it's rainy season?! I don't think I'm ready to go back to fleece hats and wet clothes.

Hi Ladies,
It has been forever since I posted, but I am still around. Summer is over and fall disappeared before me eyes! I love fall and try to soak in every beautiful day before the leaves are all on the ground and bare branches are all that I see. I really struggle through the gray days and short day light.
I am still running and am getting ready for the Las Vegas half. Last year I ran a 2:01 and am training to break the 2:00 hour mark. We will see. I need to still get my intervals in today.
I completed in my first semi dual this year. Our town had an endurance event were I did the 5K run and 30m road bike. I loved it! My hat is off to the ladies who have complete HIM and Olympic events. I really would like to do more of these!
MICH Wow 20 miles on the treadmill what an accomplishment! You will do great in your marathon. Hang in there!
Yellow are you competing in your big trail run again in December??? It is good to see you post again.:)
It will be the treadmill for me today:( The weather is horrible.
Oh , I need to find new shoes also, my foot doc and chiro said I need something different. I am struggling with sciatica on my left side and a foot issue on my otherside. Maybe NB are for me too:)
Lovely run in the forest, on my own, this morning. I've started upping the mileage and it actually felt good (which was a relief).
I can't imagine running 20 miles on the threadmill!!!
My two running partner are half-out: one recently injured her foot so she has to be very careful; the other is going through tough times emotionally. Oh well.
The forest is a good companion though.

Grog : Running in the forest sounds wonderful! That would be therapy for the soul.
I did my interval work out on the treadmill last evening and it was a tough! I am following the Ryan Hall half marathon plan and trying really hard to stick to it. I was scheduled this weekend to do a race simulation of 11 miles ( 6 easy pace and 5 at race pace) , but because of my work schedule I had to run it this AM. I finished 11 miles but did not run at the pace or intensity I should have because I was still tired from last evening. Oh well!
This morning I went back and forth "do I run in the crappy weather or get on the treadmill" I just couldn't face 11 miles on the treadmill.
Teigry, I am with you!Wet cold weather is really hard to adjust to, but once I am out I am fine and glad I did it. I just need pushed out the door!

gawwwwd, I ran on the dreadmill last night and tonight (because it's doing that really wet, heavy snow thing that makes running on the trail suck in more than one way...I hope it gets colder soon) and my hammies are angry-tight. I guess it's just the change in surface.
Shiraz, no races as I haven't been putting in the miles (I think the longest I've done since about April is 17 miles). Maybe in the spring (of '09). My goal is to not get interrupted next year  and actually do at least one hard 50k and a 50 miler. Maybe. Damn cycling and damn husband always seem to interfere with the training plan...

Please don't let it be torrential downpour in the a.m. I believe I want to run 10 miles and the treadmill means it is infinity. I don't mind rain but wet rain is bad. Same goes for wet heavy snow.
So for those 50K type folks, what is the difference between that and a marathon? Despite my marathon experience of being hopped up on Nyquil, I LOVED the distance. Am thinking for a few miles more, I could feel extra-special ultra.
I don't think I said but DH and I have a trail race this weekend :D I don't run on trails though I'd like to and DH is athletic but doesn't run. I am SO excited that when I mentioned the race, he said it would be fun to do. He then said that I could run a longer and faster distance or hang with him. I choose to hang with him and I hope (oh boy do I hope) that I might get a sometimes run partner.
Though he is my housekeeping support when I train. Decisions, decisions.

No run for me yesterday or today...... Busy day at the hospital and I didn't get home till late and today was the same. I teach again tomorrow and then we leave town as soon as I get home for an overnight trip. I hope to get some kind of something in Sunday. DH's mother is in the hospital so it may change tomorrows plans.
The weather turned COLD with winds. Hopefully I can get outside for something.
Yellow, sounds like we need a girls trip with a few glasses of wine:)!!!

Just a quickie post from me today, as I have a house full of relatives on their way over for a bbq.
I was toasted after last Sunday's disasterous 20-mile treadmill run/walk/crawl. My right quad especially was really aching for most of the week. I couldn't even make it through my ballet class on Wednesday night. :( So, I didn't run all week.
Then, on Thursday, an anticipated disaster struck at work (anticipated, because although I warned the person I was working for that the task would take at least x amount of time, the person still got everything to me at the eleventh hour). So, I worked all day Thursday, left at 5:30pm to go home and feed the dogs and then came back at 7:30pm and didn't go back home until 3:35pm on Friday. Yes, I worked all through the night. Got home, ate and went to bed and slept for 12 hours straight -- didn't even get up to go pee, which is a miracle for me!
This morning, I got up and did some cleaning and then headed out for a 10-miler. I overdressed as it looked cold out there, but ended up stripping my UnderArmour shirt and tying it around my waist (I had another lightweight top over it, so I wasn't streaking!). It sprinkled on me some, but no downpour. My leg still ached a little bit, but overall I felt really good. From looking at the clock before I left and again when I got home, I clocked 92 minutes for the run. Funny thing is that I felt like I got a second wind on my uphill back home. Maybe the Hammer Gel did me some good! I took 1/2 of a Hammer Gel at about 30 minutes in, and the other 1/2 at around 1 hour. Took each with a few gulps of water from a water fountain. No weird stomach issues. Yay! :D
Oh, I think my mom just drove up . . . better go!
Got cleared this week by the PT to try running no more than a mile. Did one on Monday and the IT band didn't act up but the hamstring on that side felt really tight, so I have been doing a lot of stretching (she has me doing four different hip abductor exercises, foam roller, and stretching the IT band area, gastroc/soleus and hamstrings--it's quite a routine). Went for another short run today and felt really good--no IT band pain, no hamstring tightness and no pain from the trigger points I've got going on in my peroneal muscles and calves (I know those knots are still there though--have been using the Stick and it still hurts!). After running for about 10 minutes I walked for another half hour and still no issues--finally making progress!
