I'm puzzled. While this is discussed as a breakthrough, I don't understand why this isn't dangerous.
Can some of you scientists help me understand?

only dangerous if you spend a lot of time in a vacuum i guess.

That's cool. The whole time I was reading I kept thinking of the guys on The Big Bang Theory (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/big_bang_theory/). Just like something they would do.

The radiation that it releases is not that much, unless you are in a vacuum.
The earth seriously emits more radiation than that.

a day's skiing at 10'000 ft means about the same amount of cosmic radiation as a mammogram.
one intercontinental flight at 30'000 subtracts 15 minutes off your theoretical lifespan (a cigarette about 5 minutes).
