Wow, Fredwina. I'm so sorry to hear what happened. What hospital are you at, or are you still there? I'm guessing there were other club people at the ride since Tom and Mary Lou have your bike, or did you call them?
Do you have family and friends to help you through this?

I'm so sorry for your injury Fredwina - but glad it wasn't more serious too.... Perhaps you could climb up on the trainer or go to spin class (if someone would kindly set up your bike for you)? Will you have some sort of bandage or splint to show that you are injured? People are surprisingly kind and helpful if you have a cast (plus they won't grab/bump/touch you there) when I had my cast I was heartened to hear from my trainer that doing free weights with my non-broken side would help keep me from losing as much strength in my broken side. I looked weird at the gym doing one armed curls, chest presses, lat pull downs, etc,( somehow I never worked up to any 1 armed push ups:rolleyes:) but at least I felt like I was doing something positive. Plus, you can get some endorphins going there too. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Take care! Tokie

So sorry to hear about what happened. Do you have any more details on the location of the fx? I know you said distal head of the radius. Was it displaced??
Fredwina
10-22-2008, 03:45 PM
no said anything about displacement:o
from my laywoman's prepective at the x-rays, there appears to be a chip in the bone right where it starts to flare for the elbow.
solobiker
10-22-2008, 06:07 PM
So it sounds like a few fx as you mentioned one was at the distal end/head of the radius which is near your wrist and a chip at your elbow too. Did you mention that you are in a splint type of cast vs a plaster one?? How long do they want you to keep it immobile? I know you mentioned about having to start PT. Let me know what you find out, I am an OT and we also work with people who have had injuries to their UEs ( arms). I may be able to give you a few ideas to talk with you therapist or Dr about.

Fredwina - So sorry about your broken bone. I broke my radius ice skating back in winter '03. It was relatively minor, compared w/your break. Just a sling--no cast, splint, etc. I started moving it right away so I didn't lose any mobility (heard horror stories). Hurt like a Dickens and I was thankful for my high tolerance for pain -- wouldn't accept pain meds from the doc. Just turning my hand was enough to make my eyes tear up. :(

Just went through this myself. The auto insurance wants to wait until all treatment is complete before they pay out on anything. I'm sure they want to just cut a single check and then have you sign something to release them from further liability. It stinks because that puts the burden on you to handle the expenses until they pay you back.
I tried to give them the info on my medical insurance so they could pay them back for my medical expenses. But, they told me they wanted to deal with just me and it was up to me to reimburse my medical insurance company. I contacted my medical insurance company anyway -- partly to be sure they would still cover my expenses and partly to give them the opportunity to deal directly with the auto insurance co. They are in communication with the auto insurance company but told me it is pretty common for them to just deal with the injured person and leave it up to you to reimburse anyone else. It's still a very good idea to keep the medical insurance company in the loop.
I recently had my final doctor's appt and submitted the paperwork to the auto insurance company this week. We'll see how it goes with getting a settlement and closing things out with my medical insurance.
I hope your healing goes well and you feel better soon.

He not only specializes in Bicycling accidents - but is member of the California and LA County bars (which is where the accident happen)
He did say that we have it 90% by the ins admitting thier guilt. the main is to make sure they don't get too cheap.

Fredwina,
Glad you have representation. Just make certain that there's enough $$ left from his fees to cover your costs - medical, bike repair, etc. I'm sure he'll have this tidbit covers. What's the use of him being paid, but not you?
And maybe not all personal injury lawyers are snakes in the grass. Not to cast any dispersions on reptiles.

Hmm. Been through a variation of this. Your bills, expenses and anything else including lost wages and pain/suffereing ought to be covered in the final settlement. This is what you have a lawyer for: to determine all that, project for any future medical cost, pain and suffering etc. Don't let them pressure you into signing the settlement before the lawyer gives you the OK.
Your personal health insurance should NOT go up.
In my case, it was an auto/auto situation with the other driver one hundred percent at fault. My auto insurer handled all the bills and then went after the other guy for reimbursement, I was completely out of the loop on that after I had provided my claim info. I am not sure how health insurance works, but given that every time we do anything to ourselves we have to fill out one of those "who can we sue/who might have some liability here" forms, I would think you could work withyour health insurer. ???
FWIW, an average percentage for a lawyer to take in these cases is around 30%.
Fredwina
11-11-2008, 02:29 PM
33%
And he said that Anthem will wait till after the settlement, and then ask me to send them thier poritiion of the settlement.

Presumably that's not her settlement, that's just the damage to the bike and clothes (which must have been what she asked for). When I had my accident, I quickly got a check for the bike damage based on an estimate from my bike shop for what it cost to replace my bike since it was totalled, but the settlement, which include the medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering comes later. I didn't think to ask for the bike clothes (they had to cut my nice sugoi shorts off my), good call fredwina). You don't want to settle until you are sure what your final medical expenses are.

Clothes : don't thank me, thank Gary,
Also got money for a new helmet.
Yes, it just for bike damage - The final settlement will come after I m discharged from PT/MD care(like you said), since from what I have read, I will not regain 100% Range of motion, and there is a possibility that I may need joint replacement surgery down the road

The only problem right is that My Roubaix is still considered evidence and cannot be fixed until settlement - it needs a new wheel (I have a spare), and some handle bar tape (a little bar Harder to fix with destroying the evidence ):( I much more comfortable on it than my Hybird, but I should have another addition to the the stable in a couple of weeks:)

not even close, but I'm wasn't expecting that (although it would have been nice)
It probably enough to buy several nice bikes, but we still working on wether AnthemBC wants to recover their part(still , that's not much)
I spent my 401K to move out here - let's say that this will go a long way to getting me to where I can retire:cool:

Hey Fredwina, that's great. Money can't really make up for a bad injury, but at least it is some closure.

hmmm, how come you have to wait another 30 days (can you tell that I'm hitting my "frustration" threshold with others' timelines?!)??
You've been through enough and it seems like it's another unnecessary burden to make you wait longer, when we all know how quickly things can be resolved when people are willing and cooperative!
When it comes time for me to be in this phase, I think that I will refuse to be the only one to be patient and wait yet again; enough!

Yes, but it would be even better if I got to deposit it rather than endorsing it and mailing it back!:o

+1, but you already know how it all works...you're the victim - with injuries to your body and damages to your bike...but you're the last in line (am speaking from already assuming this to be what'll happen in my case too, from my observations :()

Yeah! What MM said.
Why do I have to PAY $10 for the police report to get the insurance information on the guy who hit my car while I was away from it, when I'm entitled to the information in the first place??? Aren't I the victim here??:mad::mad::mad:
