My daughter sent me this link:
http://www.blackle.com/
She implied that it is somehow good for the environment, but I don't get how?
Can someone please explain this to me?
Maybe black screen use less energy?
just go to the about blackie page http://www.blackle.com/about/
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
there's much more on the web page

This is a great idea! I personally hate glaring white anything- especially powerpoint presentations at least tint it down to cream, please! And it is good for the environment. Think of all the hours we spend with our screens turned onto google, word, excel, etc that all have predominantly white screens. And it reminds me of the monochrome green or orange days. :D

FWIW, Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackle.com) compiles a number of sites that dispute Blackle's claims. Basically if you're on an LCD screen (which isn't almost everyone, now?) they say that a black screen actually consumes more energy than white.
If a white screen is too bright, dim it! Lots of computers automatically dim to adjust to ambient light, but anyone can do that manually as well.
