View Full Version : "stolen bike" retrieved

The bike that I had loaned a teenager so that she could ride 4 miles to her school bus stop has been recovered by the police! I save absolutely everything, and I had the receipt and serial number. I'm so glad to have the bike back, and now my son's girlfriend can keep using it. She is now back with her Mom, and it seems to be working out.

My son's girlfriend was living in sort of a foster situation, and was removed from the home by the police. The "foster" parent spent the night in jail. I went to the house to collect the bike I had loaned to the girlfriend and the bad "foster" mom told me she had gotten rid of it. I did not believe her, especially after she bragged to the child's real mom that she was keeping it for HER daughter. So after I gave the police the receipt with the serial number and make and model, they went to the house and removed the bike from the "bad foster" mom. Not to step on any toes here, but the whole situation was not legal, and the parents should be investigated for allowing the child to live there in the first place.
I would like the girlfriend to be able to use the bike , but I did not think the bad foster mom should have it. This girl also lost all her clothes and possessions because the foster mom did get rid of those. It's unconsionable, but I'm not the mom in this situation, just someone trying to help, and I don't have any legal grounds to press charges.

I believe that "serial numbers" are the reason none of our bikes were stolen when our house was burglarized. My car was stolen, and a bunch of other stuff, but all of our bikes were safe and secure in the garage that had obviously been rampaged. They also didn't take our Taylor guitars or dh's nice keyboard. The police said all that stuff is too easy to trace.

On a side note, when my friend crashed on her bike and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, the police got the serial number off of her bike before we hauled it away. I found that interesting.
