View Full Version : Terminology question -- I call it underwear

I want something to wear under regular pants. I've seen liners and briefs. Other than the obvious differences that I can see in the picture, any advice on what I should be looking for? I normally ride 12-12 miles with the occasional 25 mile weekend trip.

I did a 12 mile ride in blue jeans this weekend. Yikes! Never again.

Do you mean padded cycling underpants?

Yes.

I'm wondering about something like this (from LL Bean)

versus something like this:

The second one has two very bad reviews.

Try Andiamo padded skins. I have a couple of pair and I like them.

TE sells a number of options. They are also called liner shorts.

Thanks; these are interesting options.

I'm curious about the different inseam lengths. I don't have a basis for decision-making on that. In general, I'd say less is more, but perhaps the longer inseams perhaps do a better job of keeping the padding in place.

And should I assume that frequent mention of grippers on the bottom mean that the legs riding up is an issue? I've never worn anything similar to that, so I'm somewhat flummoxed by the choice.

Yes, legs can ride up depending on your leg shape or just hit at an unflattering length.

Grippers on the bottom are also intended to hold up leg or knee warmers. Additionally, short inseams don't combine well with these.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will try the Andiamo skins.

I find that short inseam = more chaffing. But maybe that's just me.

I bought the Adiamos. I had to throw them out. They were huge! The chamois was huge, too and that was the the size small. No extra smalls.
My best liners are the Sugoi ones I bought on TE. However, I wore them all day at class last week and the grippers really chafed my legs. But they fit perfectly. I think they just need to be washed a little more.

Have you tried a cycling short? Sierra Trading Post has a great price now on the Shebeest SSS short which is a very high quality short at a good price. I think real bike shorts work better than liner shorts. If its cold you can also layer them up with leg warmers, or unpadded tights.

Also, no matter how much padding you have between yourself and the seams of blue jeans, they're going to cut into you. If you still prefer a liner, best to wear pants with a gusseted crotch.

Andiamo may have improved but the ones I had many eons ago were junk.

Even so, I can't imagine wearing a liner short all day long if I'm not actually cycling. Not only are the grippers uncomfortable all day, but that part of your body needs ventilation. It just isn't healthy.

Does that mean it's actually leather?

In the old days, yes. Today's chamois are an incredible creation of synthetic fabric and padding that wicks, shouldn't chafe, is ergonomically better designed, etc., etc., etc.

I agree, SK, the chamois in the Sugoi liners is as good as any of my regular shorts.
I think next time I ride to the train, I will go without padding.
