A Mother's Day gift

My 14-year-old kept fretting because she didn't have any cash for a mother's day gift, which, I told her, was no big deal, truly.

This afternoon while I was cleaning pollen (cough, cough, achew) off the deck and porch she wheeled out her older sister's bike and said, "Mom, do you think I could ride this one now?"

She's a tiny thing, but big sister is now 17 (she got the bike when she was 12) so I said I'd come down for a look.

She had a helmet on (good girl!) and was trying to get on the bike, but freaking out because she couldn't touch the ground while on the saddle (which she had adjusted herself, down to the lowest setting).

I explained that's how it's supposed to be, that she should stand over the stem, etc. Eventually she stood, pedaled, sat down and rode up and down the driveway.....then

"Mom, do you think we could ride together?"

So, if you have a 17 year old I suppose I don't have to remind you how seldom such invitations will be in another year or two, so be sure not to miss any now. But, what you may not know yet, is that in another 10 years it may be your older daughter who asks to go for a ride with you. One of the things my husband and I cherish is the fact that our son and daughter-in-law invite us to go on rides with them.

<Sniff, sniff>That's such a wonderful Mother's Day gift! I would be so thrilled if I could get my 12 year old to ride with me. Maybe some day...

Newfsmith is right. I was invited to ride the river trail on Saturday with my 34 year old daughter. It is always a treat to spend time with her. The last couple of years the hubby and I have done some weekend rail trail rides with daughter, son-in-law and all four grandkids (The youngest is 12 this year). What a great family activity.
Hubby bought me a new pump, helmet and water bottle for Mother's Day. All in the beautiful celeste color to match the new Bianchi road bike I bought this spring. What a guy!

What a gift Shew! What a great way to connect with your child, a way that can last along time through all kinds of life events. You know that advice parents get to have big, important conversations (sex, drugs) in a "non-threatening" location, like driving in the car? I can see you and her having these big talks while rolling along, much better than in the car

I wish you many miles with your dear daughter before she flies away on her own.

I wish I had family... or close friends... or a boyfriend who shared in my enjoyment in physical activity... and cycling.

Unfortunately, it's just me.

Thank goodness for the cool people I have met in my local cycling club! They always make me feel like I am not alone!

Yes, mostly solo for myself as well, but luckily I have friends who tag along every once in a while. I think I have trouble finding people to ride with because I'm so slow, laugh. Must be the bike...not me. :)
