I have an old Klein Stage with a gorgeous red aluminum frame that is so comfy to ride, however it came with one of the first ever triples and does not shift very well. If I wanted to replace to derailluer, the chain and the cogs - what else would I need? I'm looking to get the parts relatively inexpensively so I want to make sure I get everything.

I think it's the case that some derailleurs and some cranksets do not make happy combinations. So I'm not sure you can automatically assume, especially if you are looking at combining older and newer components, that just changing the fd will improve the shifting dramatically -- you may be happier with a new crankset instead of, or in addition to, the new fd.

just a thought...

Oh, you are absolutely right, Liz! I'm just not sure what all parts I need to replace to make sure I replace them all!

What brand of components do you have on there now?
If you have something really old like Suntour, then you would also need to look into getting compatible shifters for your new stuff (assuming it's not downtube). And then you'd need to be sure the rear end also worked with those shifters. At minimum, you'd want a new front derailleur and crankset. New cables.

That's why I'm asking. I'd like to put Shimano Ultegra parts. I have those on my new Cannondale and I love 'em. The cables will be no problem. I figured I would need to switch out the rear derailluer as well, but was unaware that I would need new shifters. Thanks for the info. I'm going to price this all up to see if it's worth it (I also need new rims!).
