I have been using my Giant Sedona with the Trek interchange rack for my commute, but would like to try using my old steel road bike instead. It is a very small 1980's Fuji, a Terry-style frame with a 24" front wheel and a 700c rear. When I installed the Trek rack on my road bike, it was very close to the seat post and just a few inches under the seat. There is not enough room to even put my trunk bag on the rack. Does anyone know of a specific model of rack that might sit further back over the tire?
Check with the bike shop. Trek has surely considered different sized frames when they designed the rack system. Maybe there are adjustments? Or, maybe they make more sizes, one of which would work better for you!
(sticking with the Trek system might be a good plan, if you like the trunk bag!)

Thanks, Karen - you are right - I would have loved to stick with Trek as I spent quite a lot of money on the trunk bag and panniers that work with the "Interchange" system - you just snap them on and go! Unfortunately, it just doesn't work well with this other bike.
The rack comes in two sizes, and I have the one for smaller frames. You can't really adjust the fore/aft position of a rack. It is dictated by the rack's design. The struts go up from the eyelets and there is only a small amount of variance in position if you want the rack to sit level. What I am looking for is a rack designed so that when you draw a vertical line straight up from where the rack attaches to the eyelets, the line intersects the flat part of the rack much closer to the front instead of the middle of the rack.
I was wondering about a rack that is meant for loaded touring. It seems they sit a bit further back to reduce the problem of the cyclist's heels hitting the panniers. It's hard to tell from pictures, though, so I was hoping someone else had run into this problem and had found a rack that worked well in this situation. I did check with the bike shop. My LBS is quite small and is the only one in town. They only carry a couple of racks, and none of them worked.
