Just got some very comfy mtb shoes for cross but no ability to add toe spikes. How important are they? I'd rather not go sliding down a hill carrying my bike. Any input appreciated as I have to figure out whether to send these puppies back or not.

Overkill.

Also, they can interfere with clipping in in a hurry.

Good point. These shoes are very comfy so I'd love to keep them!

I haven't been in an uber-mudfest yet, but in general if you kick into a run-up, you'll be fine enough, even without the spike-y shoes.

I have done a couple races where toe spikes were a must - especially as the ground starts to be frozen and you have steep run ups. That said, if you are just starting out, and for most courses here, you won't need them.

I have kept them in even through my MTB racing this year, and they haven't been a problem for me.

I'm in Atlanta so we shouldn't have to worry about frozen ground during our season (brrr!). I think I'm going to keep them and see how it goes...thanks for all your input

There are some muddy runups that would be difficult to make w/o them
